After forcibly removing Antonio Love from the bathroom of the Azalea Road store, officers attempted to book the 37-year-old, on charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and failure to obey a police officer, but the magistrate on duty at the jail refused to accept any of those charges.
Love's family members said they had no idea where he was during the time that police had him in custody.
Brodrick Love said the officers dropped his brother off in the parking lot of their apartment building without saying what happened or why his brother had been missing for six hours.
Love's family members have filed a formal complaint against the officers.
Christopher Levy, a Police Department spokesman, said the officers didn't find out that Love had a hearing impairment until after they got him out of the bathroom and found a card in his wallet indicating he was deaf.
The officers' decision to take Love to jail — even after they discovered his disability — as well as their conduct throughout the incident is still under investigation, Levy said.
Use of the Taser and the pepper spray appear to be justified according to the department's policy, he said.
Love, whose family said his mental abilities are about that of a 10-year-old, wrote them a narrative of the incident as he recalled it.

Great point dagodiva! I myself have friends and family in the police force and they are what a police officer should be, but my personal experiences with cops until now have never been positive.
I don't have a criminal record and hope I never have one, because of the jobs I've had. But I've been a victim of too many stops for no reason, have been called names, punched in the face and harassed by cops because I was a poor Latino kid growing up in the ghetto.
Now, I only wish shit like that could happen again, so my partner an attorney (who's one of the best in Jersey!) and I can take millions from them and show them that they are not God and should learn to treat EVERYONE with respect and decency!!

It would not be so bad if these cops would at least try to take responsibility for their mistakes and make amends. But no! How many stories are out there like this. The cops pepper spray, zap,beet up, and occasionally shoot an innocent person. Not only do they continue with their pathetic show of power by charging these innocent people with some trumped up B.S. crime. They are protected because they acted "according to the department's policy"? I think it's time to change the fuckin policy. These cops have to be put on a leash and admit fault when they screw up because society should not have to stand for this kind of bullshit.

My best friend is a cop, she's awsome. However, the cops involved here, assuming that we have both sides of the story here, ought to be tased and pepper sprayed too! I teach folks with these types of disabilities and I can tell you that one of my folks, if scared would run to a bathroom stall.
However...why was this poor fellow out alone? Clearly he should have had a chaperone or aide with him. There may be a lot of idiots involved here and the poor fellow with a MA of 10 is in need of a good avocate.
