Vanguard on Beach of Death

afitzgerald
This week the UN released a report that more and more Somalis were attempting to flee the chaotic nation for Yemen, undertaking a dangerous journey across the Gulf of Aden.

Vanguard correspondents Christof Putzel and Kaj Larsen first ventured to Somalia in the summer of 2006 during a brief period of fragile stability. They discovered that peace reigned in the capital for a few weeks after 15 years of bloody civil war in what the world labeled a failed state. Shortly after they left the country, however, Ethiopian forces backed by US air power invaded Somalia to drive the ruling Islamic Court Union out of the capital, Mogadishu. Somalia plunged back into war.

Threatened by renewed violence and devastating poverty, countless Somalis once again fled their homes in search of peace and security. Tens of thousands try to escape in small boats across the dangerous Gulf of Aden. As Christof and Kaj found on a return to the region, many don't make it, and those who do face an uncertain future in the vast, alien desert of Yemen.

This is a segment from that show in which Christof and Kaj explore the beaches where many are found dead after their failed escapes from Somalia.

    • I don't understand why the Somalians couldn't run away to another country other than Yemen. Why risk so much when you could walk to another nation like Kenya? even if you lived in the northern parts of Somalia i think it would be better to run to Kenya.

    • These people will have to fight for their own rights and liberties. What happens when America falls from the inside due to economic slavery? Who will save us from ourselves? The answer is more about freedom vs slavery than how we are going to use a slavery government system to "save" Somalia. A sad scenario, you ready for America to fall? Our debt equals our GDP for goodness sakes, this is HISTORICAL.....but I guess American Idol and pushing Pentagon forced monopoly Federal healthcare slavery is more important to some people......this is what you get when you reject individual rights and focus on what the system can do for it's people. Sad to say, but these people could be prosperous and happy right now had they had a few more people stand up and fight for true liberty and individualism! but not......socialism slavery and tribal totalitarianism is what they ended up with.......and it always collapses on itself. What a shame.....

    • There really is nothing that we or anyone else can do that is not being done. Ethiopia went into Somalia in 2006 because they were being attacked by Somali militants (It should also be noted that the Ethiopian intervention was at the behest of the Somali government...) some of who had taken control of Mogadishu... these guys had training camps and very serious connections to Al Qaeda, and since 2006 Hizbollah. After the Islamic militants were ousted from the capital they went underground and started a terror cell called Al-Shabaab... they are on the Swedish terror list, they are not just people George Bush decided he did not like... wish it were that simple. In fact they have been discovered in Minnesota... I am not much for the run for the hills the terrorists are going to kill us all propaganda, but that does go to show that these people do have some resources and desires... they need to be dealt with.

Ethiopia pulled out a year or so ago for a short time and was asked by the Somalis to return... so you see, as I stated before, not really as simple as they would like to make it seem here.

    • What do citizens of the world do for a failed state such as Somalia when even its own citizens don't want anything to do with it?

    • "leeing escalating violence in the capital, Mogadishu, and central Somalia, thousands of Somalis are making the perilous journey across the Gulf of Aden to begin new lives in Yemen, the United Nations refugee agency reported today.

Some 12,000 Somalis – out of 232,000 people who have escaped clashes that broke out in early May between Government forces and the Al-Shabaab and Hisb-ul-Islam militant groups – have reached the northern port town of Bossaso since early May, and most of them are hoping that smugglers will transport them to Yemen."

The United Naitons makes huge bucks and remains in power simply for answering to the corporate charities that funnel cash their way. If fear the UN getting stronger, they are completely Statist and anti-freedom and they are against free speech and against the right to protect yourself and bear arms. They have even had legislation go through that would literally repeal the 2nd amendment as well as the 1st!!! This is not a joke, totalitarianism is alive and well....and it takes many various forms that most people do not stop to step back and smell the roses. The United Nations is one of the worst organizations there is. They want to centralize power, not give local communities more voting power and say. The United Nations is a huge scam that is hell bent on fascism/socialism. America was the last beacon of hope for billions around the world....now we are falling and actually have been for a long time. How sad....
