Executives with the world's largest electronic payment network said they see recent stabilization in the economy. They offered a slightly more optimistic outlook for Visa's fiscal fourth quarter, citing recent moderation in the payment volume decline.
"The velocity of the downturn has slowed," Chief Financial Officer Byron Pollitt told analysts on a conference call, adding that it was too early to characterize the shift as a broad economic turnaround.
San Francisco-based Visa reported net income of $729 million, or 97 cents per share, for the three months ended June 30. That's up from a profit of $422 million, or 51 cents per share, in the year-ago period.
Excluding one-time items including a gain from Visa's sale of an interest in its Brazilian affiliate, Visa's adjusted quarterly profit was $507 million, or 67 cents per share.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected a profit of 67 cents per share. Analysts' estimates typically exclude one-time items.
Visa's revenue rose 2 percent to nearly $1.65 billion, slightly above analysts' forecast of about $1.64 billion.

These credit cards have and always will be a bad idea. If you don't got the money for something that you can pay for it with a credit card don't do it.

To everyone talking about credit, Visa is not in the business of credit. They are a transaction company. The companies that make money off of credit card debt are banks, and there's no such thing as Visa Bank or Mastercard Bank (although Discover and AmEx do have banks). Look on the backs of your credit cards to see what bank is covering your credit.
In the transaction business, you can make plenty of money if everyone is using debit cards or pays their bills on time.
Also, charge cards are different from credit cards - charge cards you HAVE to pay the full balance at the end of the month. Most people should use credit cards like charge cards.

credit cards are essentially short term loan sharks. Every time you use your charge card you are creating a loan, and every loan has its price to pay.

Visa makes money through processing fees. They do not actually loan money so they do not have as much to do with the interest rate.

Many companies (including visa) have used this credit crisis as an excuse to cut their operating expenses and lay off workers. While America was collectively freaking out, many corporations saw opportunity.
A recession must be music to the ears of American executives.

I just find it irritating that they were able to cut 9% off of their operating expense. Why in the hell did they wait until now to find these cost cuts? Oh yeah. Because it was easier to pass the expenses on to the Banks who passed the expense on to the people. Now that their profits are suffering they will look for ways to save. Jagoffs!

This makes sense. As the public continues to struggle financially and have probably burned through cash reserves, charging credit cards becomes a desperate measure. So when the economy sucks, the credit card companies win, once again.
Please do enjoy...
