Round up: Is this healthcare pitch working or not?

There have been a lot of posts the last few days around Obama's health care plan and I haven't been sure which ones to feature (for? against? the doctors who love it? Obama's ex-personal doctor who hates it?)

So I wanted to try and bring it all into one thread - with the big question - Do you think this health care pitch is working or not? What works for you? What doesn't?

To start you off - below are a few of the more popular posts from today.

    • Saladin:

That the DEMOCRATS in congress wanted to take the public option out should tell you a lot.

It would have been nothing but a mandate to buy insurance from insurance companies at that point.

Fuck the Democrats, fuck the Republicans. We need a new party.

    • I think most people are in support of single payer healthcare, i.e. getting rid of insurance companies... there will always be rationing of healthcare, there is already depending on your deductible. If support for Obamacare is waning, it is only because of the concessions he has made to pharma and the bought politicians. I'd like to see Congress pass something strong with bravado. Surtax will pay for it, cutting costs in the long run.

    • I'll do a little debunking about socialized healthcare:

      1. there is no such thing as a difference in healthcare, there is no difference in medicine used in america and a socialized country like germany. For example both countries still use the same drugs manufactured by pfizer. The only difference is americans pay more for the cost. There is no such thing as government medicine no where one earth yet.

      2. someone said something like with the free markets we'd have healthcare like our politicians. wrong you wouldn't because there is no difference just a limit of what procedures you could afford in a capitalist system. Healthcare is not like a car wash its that simple.

      3. Socialized nations for some reason have lower obesity rates and it has nothing to do population density so stop saying america has more people because it just means there's more fat f*ckers running around with type 2 diabetes. Need a map to prove it? here eat this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7151813.stm

      4. capitalism works against the social issues of society it cannot solve them. How can you treat a nation with many cancer patients if your goal is to keep a profit? Healthcare is not some commodity, its the duty of society to make sure its citizens can perform at their highest levels. Im sick of this argument the most, it wont drive cost down, and it almost disregards what happens if cost where driven down through the "free market". The free market is a joke... Have you seen what has happened to our food supply? You want companies to make some cheap unregulated crap jacked with chemicals to make sure we have Mchealthcare? lol

      no. I didn't.

Obamacare sucks and is a fractured "politically expedient" measure that actually sets reform back decades.

      Civil Unions are the same.

Single Payer is the best option, though it isn't as politically popular.
      Gay marriage is the same.

      Single Payer > Obama care
      Gay Marriage > Civil Unions

okay, excellent analogy. i was unclear of your context for gay marriage.

and not like it matters but its easier to see what you mean if you flip them around:

      obamacare > single payer
      civil unions > gay marriage

    • I love NONE of the people pitching this chicanery actually have to subscribe to it. No one in congress, the senate, or even staffers has to be covered under this. I've spent time in a country run by socialists. it was terrible. I decided against the free hospital care and opted for the clinic. Which brings me to my next point. Since no system is perfect I'd rather have the one where I have a choice. people knock free market health care but it has advantages.

Then thank god for John Hodgeman since he came up with a solution that answers that very question.

Just make everyone a member of congress so they will be eligible for the same health care program that they have.

I would disagree that the present system gives people a choice since you can pay what you choose to whatever insurance company you choose, but it is an accountant that is going to choose what care will be approved according to their bottom line profits.

The advantage is that you have the illusion of choice, but not actual service provided for that health care.

You don't know what you're talking about.

      It's not socialism.

      It's fucking corporate welfare.

Socialism would be AWESOME. Like England, or Sweeden, or France, or well hell, any other industrialized nation.

    • They need to do a poll exclusively with people who are not already covered. That's who this helps, so of course a majority of people don't support it.

    • It doesn't look like the houses of Congress are able to handle the job of making the pitch that Obama was giving work as a proposed bill since they don't seem to be following the parameters that he outline as the goal of health care reform.

•Reduce long-term growth of health care costs for businesses and government
•Protect families from bankruptcy or debt because of health care costs
•Guarantee choice of doctors and health plans
      •Invest in prevention and wellness
•Improve patient safety and quality of care
•Assure affordable, quality health coverage for all Americans
•Maintain coverage when you change or lose your job
•End barriers to coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions.

I haven't heard that the proposals include much of that, mostly because of the interference from lobbyists.

It could be that Obama is giving them a chance to do it their way and when that fails, he'll tell them that he will do it himself since they can't

That would make more sense since it is looking more and more like history is repeating itself from when Clinton tried to reform health care since Congress is behaving the same way.

      http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sahil-kapur/for-democrats-the-future_b_248324.html

The conservative messaging campaign is thriving on misinformation and propaganda. They're using the same tactics they've used to kill health reform in the past, as well as undermine every existing major government initiative that has proven to be widely popular -- including Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. And although Friday's negotiations staved off some problematic concessions, it's working to a degree.

"This is a wake-up call for the Democrats. They better get it together, because if not, Republicans might take back control of the debate, reversing the recent gains made by progressives. Don't forget that the two failed Democratic attempts at overhauling health care -- under Presidents Bill Clinton in the 1990s and Harry Truman in the 1940s -- both led to huge Republican takeovers of Congress."

It might be that Obama planned for that and will step in to propose his own plan when they can't cooperate to get a plan that would work. That way he can motivate the democrats to stand together to save their control to be worth more than than what the lobbyists are offering

clay lived under socialism in france, and loved it. People are happier and live longer. No one is f-ing obese, and the healthcare is a service provided by the government which if they ever tried to cut would cause riots all over the country.

clay you couldn't prove that if your life depended on it. just because you believe the hospital you work for is shit doesn't necessary make it or does it make it true that other gov ran hospitals dont' run well.

second the health care plans that have been proposed don't necessary dictate whether or not a hospital would be public or private.
