Forget solid, liquid, and gas. There's a whole new state of matter!!!

Scientists at the FLASH free-electron, high intensity laser facility in Hamburg, Germany, have created a completely new state of matter, transforming aluminum into something "that nobody has seen before," an exotic material which is transparent to ultraviolet radiation.Wark says that this will give them insight into the creation of miniature stars with high-power laser implosions, "which may one day allow the power of nuclear fusion to be harnessed here on Earth." Or destroy us all.

    • When it comes to questions like "is there a soul?" "is there life after physical death?" "what is the meaning of life?" "are there parallel universes?" "is time travel possible?" every explanation is mere speculation. Theories are theories until they are proven with observable evidence, that can be recreated and tested. So far, there are no answers that are empirical with regard to such questions.Yes it is true that phrases such as dark matter and dark energy were created to encompass what we are still investigating. That is just part of the process. If ordinary people make a religion out of it by beating up with those who disagree with the asserted theories, that is not the fault of the theory, it is the fault of the people who lack critical minds and independent personalities.

    • Maybe the most ridiculous argument I've ever participated in was a (Bud Light influenced) debate about the four stages of matter.

I'm glad to see that I'll finally be able to top that.

    • If this is another state of matter it will have to go through all the riggers to prove it by multiple sources and then published. Even when proven, if it is, many may refuse to believe it.
Yes, science and the sub-category of medicine are some times hard to accept by the 'old school' concepts.

    • I'm just not buying it... if they have done something it won't nearly be in the realm of completion that they are stating. The article makes it seem like they have worked out the theories and have a final product, when its more likely that they "believe" that they have a sound theory and a kick ass CGI of what they think the end result will look like.

I'm not holding my breath for the lead into gold thing just like I'm not holding my breath (or Holdin Mah-Groin) for Cold Fusion.

    • good to see we are working both ends of the Periodic table, military app??

@FrankenPC: I believe a diamond anvil is an actual anvil with diamond jaws that can compress the a sample material to 3 million atmospheres...

On the aluminum thing... it could have been aluminum ceramic. Which is transparent to light... (Star Trek "the voyage home" whale aquarium?)... but in reality the military is *slowly* replacing screens and windows on vehicles with it. (Hummers, trucks, etc...)
It's got 2 or 3 times the strength of bullet proof plate glass and very low weight in comparison. But the best part is that it does not crack and go white like glass when hit by bullets... it just scratches like metal. In fact is so scratch proof, it will not weather down (like sandblasting).

It's expensive, about $6 sq.in. compared to $1 for glass. but it will outlive the vehicle, so it makes says...

    • So funny, scientist are far from knowing everything. They disprove each other and add new theories all the time. Everything is just what we knoe as of now. Time changes everything.

    • Idealist,

Sounds like a reasonable request to me -- though I would amend the request to read "flying car that gets at least 20 miles to the gallon...

    • Every object has a mass that can be measured, but there are some objects that have near undetectable mass and yet have an influence on large mass objects, due to the aggregated influence of the near undetectable object's huge ratio of existence.

    • In astronomy and cosmology, dark matter is hypothetical matter that is undetectable by its emitted radiation, but whose presence can be inferred from gravitational effects on visible matter.[1] Dark matter is postulated to explain the flat rotation curves of spiral galaxies and other evidence of "missing mass" in the universe. According to present observations of structures larger than galaxies, as well as Big Bang cosmology, dark matter and dark energy account for the vast majority of the mass in the observable universe. The observed phenomena which imply the presence of dark matter include the rotational speeds of galaxies, orbital velocities of galaxies in clusters, gravitational lensing of background objects by galaxy clusters such as the Bullet Cluster, and the temperature distribution of hot gas in galaxies and clusters of galaxies.

The nature of matter is different than has been presumed.

The problem with people is that they hear or learn about physics and presume it is real.
The quandary is then placed to refine what is presumed so that it works.
It goes from Rutherford to Maxwell to Einstein to Dirac.

      All are wrong.
dark matter is the new missing aspect - the aspect, however, is not missing at all. We are the ones who have been missing - the way it all really is.

There are no separations - and there are no particles (as the discreet entities implied). All is quite well attached, in fact, a complete whole.

      The missing is not missing.
As long as people hold on to the misconceptions of the past and demand that these misconceptions be a part of theory, they'll end up being disproven.
It's the monkey trap - they absolutely won't let go. They don't even know that they should.

However, it is exactly what is necessary.

Let me put it another way: Everything they taught you is wrong.
And without getting into proofs - and I will not publish here, let me just simplify: There is a complete reality and it is that all differentiations are made of the same "substance". That substance is the only substance in existence and it is in complete states of differentiation.
The whole thing is made of one stuff. It couldn't be more simple, really.

The crazy thing about science is that if you can prove strongly held beliefs, theories, or laws to be wrong --you could be a superstar, the next Einstein or something big. Or if you try to prove it all wrong and you're in fact wrong you look like a moron and your scientific life is done.

So which is it? Are you an academic in the field? I'm not so i'll take all the enlightening I can get.

I have to agree with 02 here. Dark matter and energy is just a Theory that people have come to think of as the truth.

It's only a made up explanation to fill in the holes of our flawed ideas of the universe, nothing wrong with that.

But some people defended it to the death and call you names if you don't agree.

    • Looking forward to more news on this in the future. Wonder what state it is? What will they call it? Can you smell it like a gas or feel it like a solid or liquid? Cool!
