US man 'killed child by praying'

The man, Dale Neumann, told a court in the state of Wisconsin he believed God could heal his daughter.
She died of a treatable disease - undiagnosed diabetes - at home in rural Wisconsin in March last year, as people surrounded her and prayed.
Mr Neumann's wife was convicted earlier this year.
The couple both face up to 25 years in prison when they are sentenced in October.

Tolerance is a nice idea , if it worked I would be for it . When I was young I was all forgiving and tolerant , turn the other cheek . It does not work . Tolerance gives people license to be even more destructive . This girl and all her potential did not have to suffer and die . Now I say you can have your religion , but just keep it to yourself . Do not push it on others , however well meaning you think it is . All children should have the right to choose what they believe and not be held hostage to a parents' superstition . Let them use their own minds . Common sense first .

Notfooled is a beautiful example of how efficient the brainwashing that religious "training" actually is... In his view the doctors are merely puppets who's hands are being moved by the strings held by the hands on high...WOW!... I'll guarantee you that if the work done by the doctor fails, the doctor and the doctor alone will beheld responsible...not the puppet master in the sky.

Yes that would be novel..and at that point the judge would order a full psychiatric evaluation of the doctor before proceeding.

Not all Christians are anti-doctor/anti-hospital. I don't go to the doctor because I don't get sick, but I know if I do GOD will heal me, whether thru the help of a doctor or by HIS Divine Nature. Of course once again you enlightened ones show your tolerance of those that don't agree with everything that you say, nice.

Let me get this straight.
You'll go to the HOSPITAL, and then GOD will heal you?
If that's the case, why go to the hospital at all? Stay home.
It continues to astonish me that people will thank god for saving them while completely ignoring the blood, sweat and tears poured into the medical science that ACTUALLY saved them.
There's a reason hospitals were shitty in the dark ages.

I think this man was afraid to go to the hospital with his child.Maybe he had no health insurance, but this is no reason not to seek medical help.
This young girl didn't even know what was going on with her.
Prayer does help but it takes action from you to complete it.
I hope people will not be afraid to get help when it is needed.

Thank You Sharper. Here we are in the twenty first century and still practicing these primitive rituals in hopes that some space god will make magic occur. I am growing increasingly weary with it. We can see the entire middle east is embroiled with violence fueled by religious zealotry, and here instead of seeing it for what it is...and rejecting it, we actually have masses of people with seemingly sound reasoning ability actually rejecting the accumulated scientific knowledge of the last 2000 years and embracing superstition!!! It's embarrassing.

The question to ask people who believe in this superstitious nonsense is simply...If God will heal upon request, why does he discriminate against amputee's? There is nowhere in medical annuls even a single case where a human being has regrown a leg or an arm that was amputated either by surgery or accident. Nobody has ever regrown a hand, no woman who has had a mastectomy has ever regrown her breasts. Now you have to believe that there must have been at least ONE individual who's prayers would have been answered in regards to this in the last 2000 years...The obvious answer is that prayer does not magically heal or repair human flesh or end disease. The man is guilty of gross negligence as well as unbelievable stupidity and his daughter paid the price. Those who teach this kind of dangerous superstitious fantasy have her blood on their hands as well.

Gotta love the system. Take credulous, easily coerced people and send them off to prison to be converted into Muslims!

Just some thoughts, a bit on the Devil's Advocate side...
Why is it that we always sit here and say "Don't blame religion for these actions" - Why not? Don't most religions make the assertion that their deity is all powerful and intervenes with human life? Don't most religions incorporate prayer as an necessary and rewarding (and they claim effective) part of practicing your faith? Don't most religions encourage submission and reliance on god in your life?
The idea that he "believed God could heal his daughter" doesn't sound like the ramblings of some idiot or stupid person, it sounds like a VERY COMMON belief in America due to the religious influence over our country. Why the hell should we tolerate belief systems that perpetuate untrue and insane notions, and why the hell shouldn't religion share part of the blame?

OK, Lets be realistic by show of hands who has been or knows someone that has been cured by prayer alone.
And I'm not talking about the common cold or hemorrhoids.
NO doctor intervention......

the govt should stay out of this one. who cares if some religious wacko is so stupid that he really believes that praying will cure his daughters diabetes as apposed to well documented treatments used for decades. not I. I feel for the daughter, but children die for lack of access to these treatments every day. those people had access to treatment and chose not to utilize it. the govt should not try to dictate peoples personal decisions; religious, medical, or otherwise.

Because parents have a legal responsibility to care for their children.
The child cannot say "I need medical care." "Give me medicine."
The adult controls them.
If the adult died because they refused to get medical care for themselves? Well, yes, that's not the government's business. But their children are dependent upon them, and the government does have a right to step in and prevent children from being abused. Neglect is a form of abuse.

I agree with you to an extend however there must be a line. When your actions extend to a third party the government has a right to intervene. It is one thing for him not to seek medical treatment for himself, but to not seek treatment for that child is completely egregious considering she could not fend for herself.

The title is misleading. How could one kill another by "praying"? A better use of words would have been "Let child die by praying instead".

Just because some people are not what you think they should be does it mean that they are a fool or their GOD is false. When I was 16 the doctors gave my mother 2 weeks to live. They told her to go home and get her affairs in order. She prayed to GOD for 15 more years, until all her children were grown. A month before her death she told me her 15 years were about up. I'm so thankful to GOD for that time and for answered prayers. I'm not saying she didn't have medical problems all along or go to the doctors or the hospital, she did, but it was by GOD and HIM alone that she survived. Doctors and nurses are GOD sends and I appreciate all they do, but without GOD she never would have made it. Some may try and dismiss this post and that is fine, but I know the truth.

So religious freedom has a limit. Then again given the attitudes of many doctors the difference is who you should be praying too.

it's not so much that religious freedom has a limit, mik (though i can think of an obvious one human sacrifice) it's that the parents acted negligently in not getting treatment for their daughter instead of just wishing her well... (well, i guess praying, but it's just glorified wishing)

I agree, believe in God and feel free to pray, but exercise common sense and use the benefits of modern technology. And, if it makes you feel any better, you can say that modern medicine is by the grace of God because he inspires all progress.
