Scientists claim planet is heading for "irreversible" climate change by 2040

The rise of greenhouse gases will trigger an unprecedented rate of global warming that will result in the loss of the ice-covered polar seas by 2020, much of our coral reefs by 2040 and see a 1.4-metre rise in the sea level by 2100.
The apocalyptic vision has been outlined in a paper by Andrew Brierley of St Andrews University, which is likely to influence the views of UN experts gathering in Copenhagen this December to establish a new protocol that will attempt to halt global warming.
Brierley and his co-author, Michael Kingsford of the James Cook University in Australia, examined the effect of carbon dioxide emissions on ocean habitats and marine organisms.
The scientists compared current carbon dioxide emissions with those forecast in 2007 by the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), the leading body for the assessment of global warming, which was established by the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Meteorological Organisation.
In 2007, the IPCC predicted a "worst-case scenario" that would see rapid industrialisation cause carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to increase by two parts per million each year. Parts per million (ppm) is a unit of concentration used to measure pollutants.
Brierley said atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration had increased from pre-industrial levels of 280 ppm to 385 ppm last year and was now rising at a rate of 2.5 ppm per year.
He described the outlook as "really quite nasty doom-and-gloom situation".
He added: "People have looked at how various economic situations, various developments in India and China might impact on carbon dioxide admissions and in 2007 they made a series of forecasts and if you take the worst-case scenario, carbon dioxide would be going up by two parts per million.
"This really august body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has said these are the worst-case scenarios for carbon dioxide increase and we are above that already. That's the thing that really frightens me."
In their paper, Brierley and Kingsford said that a carbon dioxide level of 450 ppm was the critical threshold beyond which catastrophic and irreversible change might occur.
Reaching that level would mean a global mean temperature rise of 2C above pre-industrial values. At present rates this threshold will be passed by 2040.
The authors added: "By 2040, some particularly sensitive marine ecosystems such as coral reefs and ice-covered polar seas could already have been lost and other unexpected consequences may arise."
Brierley said: "You can say no Arctic sea ice by 2020 – really, really soon. Certainly no summer sea ice in the Arctic by 2020."

I believe it will actually be much worse than this report suggests with the Greenland ice sheet collapsing very rapidly, raising sea level seven meters. Even if the situation were hopeless, I'd rather be able to tell my grandchildren that I did my best to make things better. In reality, though, there is hope in human ingenuity and creativity and love in recognizing that we are all children of Mother Earth. We have to get down to it and get to work.

CO2 is the stuff we breathe OUT.
We don't need extra in our face. People aren't GOING to die they are dying right now by the billions, dying from stupid little dang cold germs! When the Immune System has plenty of oxygen the human body can stop cancer, but in an extra-CO2 environment the cancers and germs stop us.
The disaster has already started.

This isn't a political issue people! Unless we take serious steps to change how we live we and all life on earth will not survive. We must all stop contributing to the pollution of our planet and we must do everything we can to influence others to do the same! Sticking your head in the sand, saying you'll be dead by 2040 so why care doesn't cut it anymore, because not only will the result of continuing to live the way we do effect us it will effect those who follow us! By 2050 the east coast cities will be underwater as the polar caps melt, the Air foul and poison to breath,Our rivers and oceans unable to support life, and the soil unable to support the growing of healthy food.none of this has to happen though cause if we start now,to change our self-centered lifestyles,we still may be able to turn what appears to be our future around! You had all better care now because its almost too late!

I bet plenty of people said to themselves "By 2040?! I'll be dead by then! I don't care!"
And that's why this shit will never get fixed.
If we had *finished* our anti-CO2 campaign in -2005-, then we would be doing damage control.
As it stands now, it's 2009 and we haven't even STARTED to do anything.
It's too late to stop it, we need to start thinking about how we're going to deal with this.
Because contrary to the common perception, global warming is NOT going to kill us all. That would be nice wouldn't it? A nice revelations style ending for human kind? But that's not what's going to happen. It's just going to make life on earth a living hell for human beings because all of the agricultural and climate knowledge that we RELY on to make our food and collect our water is going to be turned topsy-turvy.

Well of course you can always find transportation to another planet, but still, people will be dying across the voyage, and much the human population will decrease.....Just to even try to find another civilization will kill millions...

You hit the nail on the head regarding the mentality of many. It doesn't matter what we do to this planet regarding our ability to sustain life because we are arrogant humans who can just go find another one to screw up.

Yep Jan, but isn't that what farmers already do? Leave some land lie fallow and farm somewhere else? Although it's hard to imagine everyone on EARTH switching back and forth from Mars hahaha but, that could be the mentality at work.
They've already noted how fast Chernobyl is recovering. The "Rich class" could be planning to mess this one up and leave, then come back from Mars later... and you know that all the time they''re doing it they will be proclaiming to THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS it's a giant step for every one of us $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.xx using our tax dollars to pay for their tickets.

I'm with Lionboy. I'm at the point where I don't really care anymore whether this country or this planet survive. If the earth goes down at least it will take all of these ignorant, greedy, racist, warmongering, fascist repugs with it. If that means me and mine have to go down also, so be it.

They used to mine coal in the abandoned town of Carbon. Now this patch of southern Wyoming is a battleground in the debate over what many hope will be the clean energy source of the future: wind power. The Nature Conservancy is joining with policy makers, community members, businesses, scientists, industry leaders and others to slow the pace of climate change. We work to reduce the accumulation of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere and help natural areas adjust to the impacts of climate change. Climate is the average pattern of weather over the long term. The earth’s climate has warmed and cooled for millions of years, since long before we appeared on the scene. There’s no doubt that the climate is growing warmer currently; indications of that change are all around us. At the rate we are going we will reach 450PPM by 2020, especially with climate bills that fail to address the root causes of the crisis and do not seek to place necessary GHG emission targets that will help stabilize CO2 emissions as well as emissions of methane and other GHGs. This is the truth that those who post only political target posts about Al Gore don't want people talking about. Real Scientists worldwide are sounding the alarm bells on the climate and the effects of it are being felt and seen on every continent and that fact cannot be disputed.

Know what would be an effective countermeasure to the greenhouse gas problem ? Planting trees on a massive scale in places where Nature could sustain new growth forests. There are plenty of acres of land here in the USA which have been treeless plains for thousands of years simply because the wind or birds couldn't carry tree seeds that far. An Environmental Stimulus, like the Work Projects Administration of FDR's time during the Great Depression, would put lots of people back to work ,after training, which could last them 9 months of the year for many years. I plan to live in the U.K. of the Netherlands myself, and a significant amount of my new homeland will be under water due to river flooding by 2040. Most people don't understand the positive effect of making a beginning, but if nothing practical is done to create new forrests to absorb the CO2, future generations will be doomed
to tread water until the entire Earth is enveloped. If you understand that the Water is a living element which likes heat, then the more ice is melted, the faster the cycle accelerates until no rebalance is possible. - 2 years ago

You hafta wonder if this planet~sun combination doesn't have a natural EXTINGUISH MANKIND cycle coming every so often and this century is the next cycle... in which case it would behoove us to YANK THE STEERING WHEEL HARD & over-correct. Planting trees is always a good idea but really, overcorrection demands we pull the chocks out from in front of the wheels and start shoving the bus.
We don't just need good engines we need the best online, now would be good.

The smaller mammals will die before us. If there's enough smaller mammals rotting in the woods each of their decaying bodies will give off an enormous amount of carbon dioxide. This would cause a sharp rise to kick in not some nice neat graph somebody drew with an Etch-A-Sketch they got for Christmas.
After 2020 the ride gets faster.
