Who is ETA these days?

From Spiegel Online - After touting its successes against the Basque separatist group in the last few years, the Spanish government will have a hard time explaining away ETA's sudden resurgence if the group claims responsibility for last week's attacks.

"...Most experts had believed that ETA was militarily weakened after a series of setbacks. In April police arrested Jurdan Martetegi, the third military commander of the terror group to be captured in just five months. Spanish and French security forces had discovered several hideouts in southern France, where the group were planning their attacks before driving vehicles laden with explosives across the border to Spain...."

    • This is really more of a european issue, and its understandable why Americans wouldn't know much about it, or really why they should care. it doesnt really concern us in comparison to France and Spain.

      the reason this story is relevant is because the eta had a longstanding "ceasefire" with the french and spanish governments, which they quickly went back on. The French and Spanish police then captured several key officials, thinking it would cripple the ETA, but recently they've resumed bombing, causing millions of dollars in damages and several casualties. these bombings, carried out even without key military leaders, are scary as hell to western europeans

      Ok, but I don't really know why this story is significant. Anyone want to shed enlightenment for little ol' Nettle?
