A spokeswoman said EU states had agreed that “communication channels have to be open,” though they would not view the situation as business as usual.
This was a decision and a debate ongoing in Iran by Iranians, they were going to choose their leadership,” said Robert Gibbs, the White House spokesman. “He’s the elected leader.”
Four Western leaders joined a symbolic protest by declaring they would not despatch letters of congratulation to Mr Ahmadinejad.
The Iranian regime is to formally inaugurate the controversial leader in front of the country's Majlis parliament on Wednesday despite its failure to overcome a popular uprising against the leadership.
Opposition challengers, who dispute the outcome of the June 12 election, have called for mass protests outside the parliament building and at main squares and markets around Iran to coincide with the inauguration.
America has outlined plans for a twin track strategy towards Iran. Its offer of direct negotiations with Tehran remains open despite the protests. But if the regime spurns President Barack Obama's call to unclench its fist, Washington plans to press for sanctions. The most potent under consideration would close off its access to imports representing 40 per cent of its refined fuel consumption.
A Senate measure sponsored by Joseph Lieberman, the former Democratic vice-president candidate, would punish companies involved in the trade. Petrol supplies came into contention yesterday as the price doubled at the pumps overnight. There were also reports that the head of Tehran's main refinery had been replaced for participating in efforts to organising a strike in sympathy with the opposition.

why is it that just about ANY elected leader of ANY nation these days seems to be elected not by popular vote, but by some weird government stuff that the general public is expected to know very little about? Naturally this news will lead to more conflicts in that part of the world!!! It's a good thing the retarded chimp is out of the white house though, or who knows what could happen! The middle east just seems like it's the the place for conflicts! That sure isn't anything new ether! Conflicts & the middle east have been an issue at least as far back as 4 B.C.E.!!! Once again the world has failed!

lets not be simple minded about this, why not "agree" the "elected" leader while quietly giving supplies to under rebels
Ahmadinejad can't paint the US as an evil force trying to incite violence if we publicly aknowledge his authority
Plus saying yeah your prez and now we're gonna sanction the sh*t outa you casue your a clown makes it very clear we're not punshing the people but the leader
(sorry for any spelling errors I'm useless without a spell check)

I cant believe this guy thought the halocause was a myth...
Didnt he also say that America was a satanic power that with god's will would be annhilated?
Also he mentioned in a message to the american people dated 28 November 2006 that the U.S. is screwing everything up all over the world, so fine I vote we move everyone back to the U.S. and to hell with the rest of the world. There are going to be conflicts around the world and most people dont want us doing anything about them because they dont involve us. So what they're saying is that instead of using our power to help these people from a cruel fate that we should just leave them be, hope for the best, and only enter the conflict if and when it involves us. - 2 years ago

You're right Prijedor, Israel is overjoyed right now at the prospect of keeping their little Hitler boogieman around who allegedly said he wanted to wipe them off the map so they can continue to terrorize their own citizens.

Ahmadinejad makes it easier for them to paint Iran as a bad nation, so why not have the idiot stick around for another 4 years, also, Ahmadinejad has done a lot to privatize their national resources over the past 4 years
