Their Freedom, At What Cost?

~ Yesterday, it required the full prestige of a former U.S. President to win the freedom of captive journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling. Mr. Clinton’s visit is a message unto itself.~ The important question going forward is whether Mr. Clinton’s visit was merely the down payment Kim extracted from the Obama Administration for a potentially larger set of American concessions. It will bolster Kim’s bid to dissolve the six-party negotiations in favor of the direct talks with the U.S. he has long sought.
~ If it turns out that if a new nuclear negotiation really was begun during Mr. Clinton’s visit, it will also send the signal to North Korea that the worse its behavior, the more it stands to gain from the U.S. And it will mean that Kim’s price will be even higher to spring the next American hostages.
~ Now that two American journalists are home safely, let’s hope the U.S. didn’t secure their release at the cost of further negotiations that will only give Kim more time to perfect his nuclear arsenal and develop his ballistic missiles.
~ The White House insisted that Mr. Clinton’s mission was strictly humanitarian and that he was not carrying any messages from President Obama. We hope that’s true.
*~ Post comment dated 8/6/09 per reuters: ~*
~ Clinton became the most senior American envoy to spend time face-to-face with Kim in nearly a decade.
~ It allowed Clinton to bask in the kind of American spotlight he has not enjoyed in some time. Politico called him an "international man of history" and the New York Post declared, "Bubba gets the chicks."

Yes, Diva the name is MoonLoon, a sign of respect for my British friend, Moon the Loon, murdered by armed robbers in Badagry, Nigeria. Let me share some facts with you. As, I have noticed that you and MetalCookies cannot post information on yourselves. I am a resident in one of the most dangerous cities in the World (Lagos) and (Port Harcourt). I run a business that deals with a wide range of people, including gov't. officials. I have seen murders, beating and burning of live victims, hundreds of police instituted beatings of civilians, riots breaking out at a moments notice, and accidents involving 10-15 people where the bodies are dragged to the roadside and , hopefully claimed by a family member. I, myself have been threatened by police (bribes paid), and held at immigration with 2 AK-47's pointed at my head while the immigration official threatened 6 months in a Nigerian jail for me, more bribes paid! Your knowledge of third world politics borders on the infantile. Expats like me are kidnap targets on a daily basis, so we learn to walk a careful path. When I post a comment it is based on real life experiences in a country that is dominated by a criminal elite. I have been relatively polite to you and others that clearly are young and inexperienced. I do not watch Fox, cannot get it. I watch Aljeezra, BBC, and CNN. I am my own man and my thoughts represent my own beliefs. I do not choose to confront the authorities here, nor will I enter their country illegally, embarrassing the U.S. I suspect that if I did, Bill Clinton would not come to the rescue. Just as the kidnapped expats in Nigeria have been ignored by their gov'ts.

All that tough talk and you still gotta pick on two journalists whose only real crime was trying to tell people a story they could get no where else...

@lifestudent: "two journalists whose only real crime was trying to tell people a story they could get no where else..."
See, this mindset is exactly what I was trying to point out in one of the other posts in this thread. Thanks for the example. Your comment is rational and heartfelt, I'm sure.
In fact, the only flaw I see is that it is the opinion of a free America. It is, however, NOT the opinion of Kim Jong II. We can NOT go to terrorist countries and expect the same treatment and respect as we receive in America. We can NOT demand that other countries let us have the freedom to do whatever we want like we do at home. Other countries couldn't care less what we want, or if we think it's fair.
Remember this the next time you hear someone run down America.
I need to warn you-- if you're gonna pick on MoonLoon you're way out of your league.

The both of you are ignoring the the actual situation, this isn't about te same treatment comparing one nation with the other, the basic FACT is, that these people risked their lives trying to show us what is going on in that nation...
Do you not know that they already knew the consequences?
The both of you are way out of your league, if you simply cannot appreciate what they have done, because this is no failure, this is a celebration!~

I did not mean to insult you or the memory of your friend. I am not so young, or as naive as you might think. I am an idealist. I did post that I had my "ass cart(ed) off to jail." I did not give any particulars - living through it once was bad enough. I will say that it was while I was just doing my job. I, too, lost someone to murdering thugs – my brother. I am not afraid of apologizing for bad behavior on my part, so I am sincerely sorry for hurting you in any way, even though that was not my intention, clearly my post has hurt you. My remarks were not aimed at you, but at akamaial, as I believe he is a buffoon. Read his profile. Read my "profile" if you are so inclined. I am a Liberal Democrat Feminist (and, yes, a woman), so I am not a Fox watcher by choice. I get enough of their crap on the wire. The most dangerous place I have been to of late is Baghdad, and never want to go back. I am a fierce supporter of human rights, most especially women's and children's. I am a survivor of child rape. Even though I am a Liberal I own guns - that is not meant as a threat, I truly own them for protection. My town is so poor we have no police department. Besides, I am also a fierce supporter of our constitution, in particular the Bill of Rights. (Amendments 1 - 10). In October of last year I was visited by the Secret Service because of something that they THOUGHT I said. They actually were fair, and respectful, and obviously, since I am not in jail, they realized that the comments I made were edited, and taken out of context. Still, I was upset that my words were twisted, and, in fact, I now see that our right to free speech has had chunks blown out of it. The SS incident is not the ass carted off to jail incident. I have been shot at, punched, kicked, hit with a car on purpose, (no, I am not paparazzi), and more. I am a radio news person (3 stations) and have written for our local paper - when we had one. I worked for Al Gore in '99, and 2000. I was Town Campaign Chair in a county that was critical in a state (NH) that was critical to his campaign. I was also a paid staffer. I was Publicity and Press Co-Chair of a County Dem Committee, while working at 2 small radio stations and running for office (lost to a Repub) - typical small town New England citizen, we do 3 and 4 things at once. I have been, and am being cyber, phone, and physically stalked - which is the reason I prefer not to post my whereabouts. Ooo - Sotomayor has just been confirmed! Yay! I have to run, but please accept my apology for having offended you. And please stay safe and well.

No problem, Diva. It can be hard for many commenters to accept that some of us are forced to make a living in countries that are not bound by American values. Metalcookies means well, but does not understand the challenges of running a business outside of the U.S. I have no doubt that Bill Clinton, carried a message from President Obama, that would encourage the release of these two reporters. However, as a taxpayer and U.S. citizen, I want to know; what were the terms for releasing these two women?

Did that piss you off? BFD to you, my dear. I worked for VP Al Gore years ago, and HE knows my work and creds - I don't feel compelled by your temper tantrums to reveal all to you. Are YOU an expert? Yes, you have “stirred things up” - a hornet’s nest - and you don’t seem to see that YOU are the target. Being a journalist gives me a different perspective on what happened to Ling and Lee. You are entitled to your "perspective," your First Amendment rights, and all the responsibilities that go with those rights. Apparently you don't feel the need to be responsible. You don’t see your actions as hurtful, or ill conceived. You don’t believe you did anything wrong. You don't believe you should suffer the consequences of your ill-timed and placed "perspective." "Doing your job" doesn't mean you can travel to dangerous places with impunity. It's funny how we Americans expect every country in the world to change their policies for us and allow us unfettered access to anything we want to see with no consequences. We think even governments who routinely murder their own people we should somehow have the run of the place.
I'm very happy it worked out for these young women. But being journalists doesn't assure their safety. With their job should come an understanding that if you put yourself in a dangerous situation you might be sorry. You have to be willing to take that chance.

We agree that sometimes a journalist might have something unpleasant, perhaps even life threatening, happen to him when he's on the job, right? We agree that journalists know this, and choose to go on the assignment anyway, right? By George, I think maybe we DO see eye to eye!
If someone chooses to become a journalist, more power to them. But with their choices come consequences. You can't have one without the other, even though you might think it's not fair.

Clinton apologized because that's exactly what Obama wanted him to do. Clinton was on a mission..."I don't give a damn what you say or do, just apologize and then get those women out of there."
Mr. Obama's main three foreign policies are;
1. "First apologize, then ask questions later."
2. "Always apologize, it makes the other side feel good, even if you dishonored your country by doing it."

You are the first to question I, your "facts" you claim are wrong...
How do I know? I may have explained several times already, but you don't listen....
I determine truth from lies, as well as from your lies...
My point stands, your point is now disabled...
Overall your statements are indeed lies, I won't say all, because then you will overexaggerate..

I think Mr. Obama was glad to agree that Clinton should gothere. Clinton's job was to give Obama a victory AT ANY COST.
At this point, meaning when Democrats who voted for Obama are becoming skeptical about their uninformed choice, Obama figured, who gives a damn what this move will cost, just get those two women out of there so I can show my great victory to all the doubters. - 3 years ago

Hmmm, is that not one of the reasons we post comments to engage in dialog? I suppose you approve if it is in line as to what you think, i.e. ... your bias?

If the dialog used is only stated to elicit a desired negative reaction, then I believe it would be considered trolling.
Did you think posting this truncated article the way you did was unbiasedly or fairly highlighting the situation? I sincerely doubt it.
Surely if Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly were saved from 12 years hard labor in a North Korean labor camp by former president George W. Bush, then you would be focusing on the humanitarian side of the Republicans instead of the ramifications of nuclear proliferation and what concessions we made for their release (neglecting the fact that this was a PRIVATE HUMANITARIAN MISSION with virtually no political agendas attached).

Leave it to someone like you to take a triumph and turn it into a travesty. Would have rather have the two imprisoned in N. Korea for 12 years just for being close to the border?
Hope it makes you happy...

I wasn't implying anything, I was asking a question. Apparently one I will not get an answer about.
I say you're trying to turn it into a travesty because you're being critical of the rescue efforts, and doing so merely to be contrary. Or at least, to get an opinion on the "flipside" that many conservatives have assumed come with concessions to the N. Korean government through Obama's administration.
To do so less than 24 hours after their arrival into the states is pretty tactless and also pretty far-fetched given the reasoning I gave above.
But I'm the biased one.... Right. Having fun in Imagination Land right now?

Did I imply that it was not a grand humanitarian deed?
Yet, is there not cause and effect?
There may in fact be ramifications none the less.
Because I'm not singing in your kum-by-ya choir. is that cause to go apoplectic?

Underlying ramifications - what underlying ramifications? YOU get a grip. Your timing sucks, you just tossed acid on your "flipside" "Welcome Home," and it would seem that although you state you want to, "...elicit comments on the underlying ramifications..." you truly do not. Or is it that you are only looking for a narrow response? The comments above are not those of "...P/C hacks," but of thoughtful, compassionate human beings. You ought to think about dropping the bull crap, and rejoining the human race.

I immediately hit the DOWN button. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? It seems that you are an idiot 7 days a week. Take a day off. All the right-wing-nuts of this world have been screaming that Pres Obama will Kowtow to some dictatorial regime or another... hasn't happened and won't. We all were living under a dictatorship that lasted 8 years and ended about 7 months ago. Want to go back there? I don't. But if you do, then I suggest you get your passport in order, get on a plane, head to China, inadvertently cross the border, get yourself captured, tried in a kangaroo court, convicted of spying, and sentenced to 12 years hard labor. I guarantee that YOU would be screaming for Pres Clinton - or anyone - to secure your release. To which I would respond, "This cost is too high. You are not worth it."

Wow, this is only one of a very few articles on Current that immediately moved me to smack the dreaded "downed" button. I agree with nephwrack that it is completely insensitive. I'd say not as much for it's content alone but for it's timing as well.
This was all vetted well ahead of time and is yet another example of how some people simply cannot distinguish between diplomacy and negotiation.
Some will just always confuse talking with coddling...sigh. - 3 years ago

Original reports stated that the two women were captured on the other side of the border - not in North Korea. Do you think that their plea of "guilty" was freely chosen? I think not.
If this tragic event brought these two countries into talks again then at least something good came of it. We all know that NOT talking only allows for more secrets, more resentments, more danger.
I believe that President Clinton had very little to do with this release. The release was secured before he got on the plane to North Korea. We have a lot of diplomats to thank including Bill Richardson and Al Gore.
And ultimately, what option did we have? Are they suggesting that we NOT try to secure their release? Preposterous.

ok so i may have jumped the gun on that earlier post... but what are your reasons for editing the text of the WSJ article the way you did? do you honestly think that the release of Laura and Euna puts the U.S. in any more danger than it has (or has not) been from North Korea?
