I love Paula Abdul. She was a dancer slash choreographer who had just enough of a voice to rock it as a pop music star back in the day. Her dance-y tunes from the 80s have made everyone across America forgive her every time she summersaults over her own sentences while praising the contestants on American Idol.
Paula, who was once condemned for throwing too much honey-drenched praise the contestants’ way in years past, really grew into her role as the judge who sat in between the two boys: Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell. Each had their role. Randy brings the funk and fun while alternately praising and critiquing. Simon is the ultimate truth teller, giving negative feedback for solid performances, tearing apart mediocre ones, and urging on the best while still finding a piece of wardrobe to harp on. The other male figure is Ryan Seacrest, the host, who attempts to tie the show together by facilitating performances and contestant/judge interaction. And in the middle of all these men was Paula.
