Psychologists Say Gay-to-Straight Therapy is Wrong

Instead, the APA urged therapists to consider multiple options - that could range from celibacy to switching churches - for helping clients whose sexual orientation and religious faith conflict.
We are still having this discussion?

Ok. First of all, I think you are born gay. Trying to change the fact that someone is gay with some ridiculous "treatment" such as shock therapy can be psychologically harmful to them. Don't try to make them change because it's just not possible. You cannot change how you feel or who you are attracted to.

I don't understand why anyone thinks being gay is a choice or an illness. Is there a cure for conservative intolerance? I think they should spend time in the lab for that disease.

We are what we are; get on with life. Oop's, I am not gay, just in case someone is curious. Regarding sexual orientation I am a liberal, on other issues I chose a position based on my beliefs.

Fun fact.
Homosexuality is mentioned a grand total of five times in the Bible.
Poverty is mentioned over two thousand.

To address everyone's comment, you must look at the context of these theories. They constantly update their manual (which means I gotta drop some hard cash everytime they do XD). It wasn't that long ago that the medical field thought that they can treat women with PMS with water therapy and such. And like any another science, it conforms to the current situation that it's in. So, if you're going to criticize the APA about such a thing, you might as well criticize every scientific area because they too have had a history of such.
Toward the article, it was a sad attempt, from many years prior to today, to convert homosexuality to heterosexuality. The method, RARELY performed today, has a maximum of a 4% rate of success which basically means it doesn't work. All it involves is suppression, rewards and punishments, conditioning, and cognitive rewiring (I forget the term for it).
There are only two reasons why the APA and some psychologists still suggest it. 1) They firmly believe in it (which is rare btw). 2) Like any other science, they want to avoid controversy. For instance, we could have been ahead in stem cell research but because of the controversy surrounding the issue, they have slowed down their research and went on to educating, hoping to quell of the fears.

there is nothing to be forgiven for in being gay.

If god is all powerful and forgiving. Why is being gay a big issue. It seems that adultery is common place in a lot of religious households maybe that should be more of a focus.

The matter is still the fact that no matter how progressive this country has become, it still holds many illogical taboos such as this. The day that the fear mongering and ignorance wildfires cease, we may never even have to worry about people being afraid to "end up gay". I don't blame the psychologists at all, theirs is an evolving science, and I find that it is just as honest of a mistake as any for them to figure out that doing things to please the patient isn't always the best solution this late in the game; it is, after all, the frightened, and ignorant, conservative people who would rather under go therapy and/or exorcism to get rid of whatever it is that makes them gay.
I say, the real issue are people who perpetuate the bigotry, and force people to fear leaving the closet. It's ok to be who you are, and we need to get the churches in line with that. They don't still condone slavery, blood sacrifice, or selling daughters, so why should they cherry pick this one instance and forget the others? Either they forget them all, or they become consistent and claim to be bigots. This is my ultimatum for those who argue that it isn't natural.

fuhleesha:
Just so you know for next time, the world is technically not spherical. In actuality it is more like a pear. This is due to a few thing, The equatorial bulge, the overall narrowing of the earth towards the north pole, and the widening towards the south pole.
The point is, that like the earth the true nature of gay and straight are much more complex than people believe. If you stop trying to narrowly define the world you live in you just might be pleasently supprised by the results.
