Peace Junkie TV: IRAN

"So 4 More Years Of Ahmedinejad then...yikes.

Since the announcement of the controversial President of Iran's surprise re-election, supporters of rival candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi have taken to the street amidst suspicions of voter fraud.

In response the hardline elements within the government have conscripted security forces to stamp out the protests.

The main misgivings stem from how Ahmadinejad seemed, on the basis of the results at least, to have won in areas that were mostly pro-oppostion. Places like Tehran where he somehow managed to win by over 50%. He is deeply disliked in the big cities and has never won big there. So add this with him beating his opposition in their own provinces?

Goes without saying that to even the casual observer, things look a bit dodge.

Juan Cole gives a breakdown on his blog on the key points of contention. But although these points don't necessarily mean that Ahmadinejad stole the election, you decide for yourself.

    • Interesting links Legion. Weird how traditional news sources seem to be playing catch up with this. The video content on the web alone is so rich - updates seem to come often - just watch the twitter feeds and forums like the one you linked to.

Anyone else feel that these protests suggest a new kind of networked, internet based organized mass movement?

We saw the budding of one with Obama....

Maybe we'll see a web-powered revolution one day?

and one in the beginning of 2008 with the worldwide protests against scientology. I think the reason traditional news channels aren't reporting on these things as much is because for whatever reason, they don't want to. They'd much rather focus on other things like the Gates/ Police debacle that got completely out of hand or beating the dead horse that is Michael Jackson's death. The true beauty of the internet though is that we are our own reporters and it doesn't cost us a dime to get published (internet service fees aside).

Like where your heads at Legion. Your right - its always the common denominator that holds sway on news priority. Simple truth is that most things that should be at the top of the agenda (in my own opinion) just dont hold the attentions of most viewers that would rather be shown pretty pictures and so they follow suit.

But it isn't so simple obviously - the media can try communicating in a way that isn't as staid as they do now. Perhaps why people like Jon Stewart and Charlie Brooker are so popular now because they offer an amusing alternative btu still hit the facts home?

    • Amazing work Guy. Great editing and excellent choice of music, but the real suprise is, I never knew you had so much comedic talent. Fantastic! Really helps get the message across in a very effective way. Keep up the good work my friend...
