"This suggests that changes in their environment and lifestyles make them more prone to develop cancer," said Dr. Paulo S. Pinheiro, a researcher in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Cancers of the colon and rectum among Cubans and Mexicans who moved to the United States was more than double that in Cuba and Mexico. Lung cancer among Mexican and Puerto Rican women living in Florida was also double the rates in their countries of origin.
Other cancer rates that were higher in the states:
-Tobacco-related cancers among Cuban men.
-Liver cancer among Puerto Rican men.
-Cervical cancer among Mexican women.

it would be good to point out, before people start talking about unseen environmental hazards in the US, that many of the cancers listed are closely linked to behaviors.
Lung Cancer linked to smoking
Liver cancer linked to drinking
Cervical cancer linked to sex/sex-related activity (HPV virus); almost 90% of cervical cancer cases (many researchers believe the number is even higher than that) are directly related to contracting particular HPV strains.

This trend reflects the appalling health trends in our country. This isn't just exclusive to Latin Americans--most immigrants who come to the United States have markedly worse health after 5 years of being here. Furthermore, the children of immigrants are born with and accrue worse health than their parents. For the Latin American community, factors that contribute to this are: long, arduous labor that is usually required by most of the members of a Latino family, unhealthy American food, and a loss of community that is experienced, particularly with the younger generation.
Latin Americans come here looking for work and a better life, but their health pays a big price.

Hmmmm. When Europeans started colonizing the United States, the diseases they brought with them devastated dozens of Indian nations. It was not unusual for a third or even half of the inhabitants of a tribe to die once it was exposed, for example, to small pox.
In fact, one of the earliest known examples of biological warfare has been documented in the practice of purposedly sending the blankets of small pox vitims to Indian tribes for their use in an attempt to spread the disease and thereby quash resistance to Westward expansion.
So it strikes me as at least a POSSIBILITY that the bodies of people who did not grow up here and become acclimated to some of the substances now common in the U.S. lack the necessary resistance to fight off these cancer triggers. Total speculation on my part...just a thought...
