Protester seen with gun outside Obama town hall

WakeUpPeople
MSNBC’s Ron Allen is reporting that cameras filmed a protester with a handgun strapped to his leg outside President Barack Obama’s town hall meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The man was seen carrying a sign saying “It’s time to water the tree of liberty.”

The man’s “tree of liberty” sign is a reference to Thomas Jefferson, who said “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

Allen says the Portsmouth police chief told him the man’s gun is legal, because he is on private property — he is on the grounds of a nearby church. Police say his gun is registered and he can keep it on him as long as it is not concealed.

“The police are obviously keeping a close eye on this man …and I suspect that he won’t be here when the president arrives in a few hours’ time,” Allen told viewers.

UPDATE

New Hampshire TV station WMUR is reporting that the Secret Service had a pick-up truck towed away from the site of President Obama’s town hall in Portsmouth “for security reasons,” after a bomb-sniffing dog circled the vehicle several times.

“Officials said a Secret Service bomb dog had a hit on the truck, but they did not say whether there was a specific threat detected,” WMUR reports. “The truck had masonry equipment in it … It was parked in the furthest lane away from the rally, closer to media satellite trucks.”

Obama is scheduled to appear at Portsmouth High School at 1 p.m. Tuesday for what could be a rowdy “town hall-style” meeting at a time when some foes of his health care overhaul have shouted down lawmakers holding similar events around the country.

“He’ll discuss what health insurance reform will mean for Americans who already have insurance, highlighting the consumer protections he laid out in recent weeks and focusing on ending denial of coverage based on pre-existing conditions,” an administration official said.

Around 1,800 people are expected to attend Tuesday’s meeting.

    • Have some sense , man ! He is working on his 15 minuets of fame with his not so subtle threat against the president . Either he can be a martyr and get on some talk shows , or provoke violence against the rightfully elected president . Either way , he serves no one but himself . He threatens gun rights just be being where he is , so if you care about that , it is still , a no win . He'll be in jail in the next few years for some violence anyway .

    • No, eleganza, I don't. I know my rights under the Second Amendment. It seems the reporter doesn't hence my response to his bullshit about lawyers and injunctions. Open carry is LEGAL in New Hampshire so the reporter had no legal basis for his dumbassed remark.

It's perfectly legal in New Hampshire and many other states in these United States. If these media buttmunches can't get it through their heads that the Second Amendment gives We the People the right to bear arms, then someone needs to sit their silly asses down and explain the facts of life AND the Constitution of the United States to them. Watson is a dick and shouldn't be allowed to run his idiot mouth on ANY public forum. He's too stupid and ignorant of the Constitution of the United States.

    • Just out of curiosity... what would have happened to a brown man carrying a gun (licensed) to a town hall meeting when Bush was prez? Let's say for clarity's sake he was wearing a turban...

      I wonder....

    • I'm interested in knowing if there is a law against carrying a butcher knife in plain view? The elderly black lady in the wal mart parking lot sure was not making a veiled threat to the president and she was taken down violently.... on private property! So help me out here... if an 84 year old woman, needing a cane to remain upright, on private property, in possession of a knife, is considered to be so threatening, so terrifying so malevolent that to protect the people around her, she must be body slammed to the pavement, then why is a man with an ax to grind at a political rally with a hand gun NOT considered at least the equivalent of the elderly lady? Which one has the motivation and the ability to do the most harm? regardless of what you post, the answer is known to all, clearly the man with the gun and the anger is.

Good points! I think they have only made packing gun legal with permits but not for knives, thus they can arrest someone with a knife. They obviously over-reacted to an elderly woman, but from the news, they seem to over-react often and sometimes kill people who are not really a threat.
No one should be near the president or other official with any kind of weapon. Perhaps they need to inform the public of that because some obviously don't know.

The interuption in critical, and common sense thinking due to a over-medicated citizenry.

And then there is the obvious addition of comments coming directly from people who have no desire to make coherent, and rational statements.

This guys is probably working for the FBI to cause trouble so the media can go "ooohh look there's a nut with a scary gun!" And current reacts with pavlovian-like responses.

    • Protesting = fine.

Gun ownership and display that doesn't break any laws = fine.

Standing outside of a town hall where the president is facing hundreds of extraordinarily upset, rabid protesters that would rather see him crash in burn in his attempts to help the American people than try to actually do anything productive, with a gun and sign that clearly insinuates the wish to draw blood and spread hatred = how stupid can you be?

Yes, he has the right to have a gun and protest, but you do NOT bring a gun and malicious desires to a place where the president is staying. You're just asking to be hauled away.

    • borymp:

Bearing an arm is an out of date amendment that does not compensate for any level of progress within society. It is an empty ideal that allows the opportunity for "idiots" to feel the "right" to carry something that requires absolutely no intelligence what so ever to carry. Most people show up to protests with signs and a statement. What kind of statement does bearing an arm state? Fear? Intimidation... for what? Tradition and an outdated ideal.

So yeah...equating a gun carrying idiot with the klan is meant to be a genearlized representation of the lack of intellect one has to "bear an arm" at a "peaceful" protest. If not klan..? What do you prefer? Hick? Narrow minded, fear insighting, initmidating asshole? Take your pick. Because from a generalized standpoint it doesn't matter what word you choose. Any level of representation of violence should be regulated.

In fact...this entire country needs to be hung upside down until all the guns fall out of their pockets and then collectively slapped up side the head. Bad gun bearer. Bad! Cops and Military should have guns. Not "common man."

I will say that openly caring a gun while protesting the president is a stupid choice. But taking away all the guns from law abiding citizens is ridiculous.

You talk about how much our society has progressed but that is simply your opinion. The fact is if some one is threating my life the cops are not going to be able to do anything about it. They are to busy raising money my handing out speeding tickets and fighting a failed drug war.

Now right wing militias are on the rise, home invasion robberies are on the rise and the cops are busy writing speeding tickets. I will keep my guns thanks.

@hawk. I don't think society progressing since the constitution being drafted is my opinion.

We finally have an ethnic president.

So it's safe to say we, as a country , have finally progressed. A little. I could draw solid examples from history books...but I think I made my point.

That being said.... I can't argue with you. Our country allows the right to bear arms. And a select few 'bad apples' can't represent the whole lot. If the country says you have the right to own a gun and protect your self from the evils you speak of...so be it. Doesn't make my point any less valid than yours.

Funny you should bring up England. They have knife problems that are in the news daily (refer to BBC1).

Enjoy your guns. I'll stick to biking, hiking, and other forms of recreation.

Too bad you live in an area where you have to protect yourself in such an extreme manner.

    • So, let me see if I can understand Republican "logic" (and I use that word in the loosest possible sense):

      - Government interference in healthcare decisions is wrong, unless it involves a woman's fetus or Terri Schiavo
      - Paying to ensure that all Americans have access to decent healthcare is wrong, but spending a $1 trillion to rebuild Iraq is fine
      - We don't support an expansion of Medicare, except when it is a $1 trillion giveaway to Big Pharma passed by a Republican congress and signed by President Bush
      - We stand opposed to government interference into our lives, unless it involves domestic wiretapping or the Patriot Act (and only when a Republican is president)
      - We are concerned about irresponsible spending, except when a Republican president spends more than the previous 42 presidents combined
      - We support the right to dissent, except when it involves anti-w@r protesters, who should be herded into Free Speech cages and surrounded by armed riot police
      - We support the First Amendment for conservatives, but don't mind when the Secret Service arrests peaceful protesters for wearing an anti-Bush t-shirt
      - We are opposed to a single payer healthcare system, but don't object to us financing one for the Iraqi population
      - The President should have unlimited executive powers, but not if he is a bl@ck Democrat

Yup, that all makes perfect sense. Unfortunately for Republicans, most of us have a memory that goes back further than January 20, 2009.

All I'm saying is fair is fair hell we would get tazed and dragged out by our hair for just standing up with t-shirts at a republican event by the police. So what I want to know is why these fucks aren't getting the same treatment by the cops? I mean just yesterday i watched a vid of a cop taking down a 84 year old black woman to the ground so hard blood started pooling under her head. So whats holding back the cops at our town halls? Can't be the age must be that they don't want to be seen slamming rich old white men and women around. Anyway this double standard crap is BS we had to watch our P's and Q's while their republican party raped the earth, tortured and kidnapped people and completely ignored the other half of this country. We got over 60 percent of the popular vote in this election so you all can sit down be quiet and wait your turn to ask in a calm manner whatever question (not statement) you have for our representatives and then you will calmly listen to the answer with out interrupting. Or you can be escorted from the premises and/or arrested if you don't want to co-operate with your removal which for my part I hope includes you getting tazered and clubbed repeatedly .It's only fair.

    • Well it's because this is an Obama loving site.

It wouldn't matter where you are if you are following laws. Get over it.

This man is doing whats necessary to draw attention to a problem. A tyrannical overtaking of the American public.

Read all of Thomas Jeffersons quote, that was a response to Shay's Rebellion, and understand what is meant. Jefferson was about liberty and the rights of the people, not trying to take away rights and regulate others. Shaysites rebelled and lost against the armory, but as Jefferson said, this type of rebellion is needed to keep liberty fresh and not let government take over the people. That tyrants and patriots have to die to keep liberty on the front of the peoples minds and not let the government get carried away, and maintain there responsibility to the people and making the people happy and aware.

This presidency has done none of that, and is continuing to strip Americans of rights and trying to secure a health care system that will only screw up shit more. Now there are people using what TJ said to open eyes and bring liberty and freedom to the forefront, while a socialist tries to strip it.

How do you know what this man's motivation is? You are guessing, and by coincidence his message is exactly in line with your own political philosophy?

Calling Obama a socialist destroys your credibility. For one socialism is an economic system, not a system of government, so why are you relating socialism to the ideas of liberty and freedom with respect to the right to bear arms... and for another, Obama is far from Socialist. I personally like many socialist economic ideas and Obama isn't even close. You might need to educate yourself on what Socialism actually is, in order to know that Obama is not even close.

What rights are being stripped from us? I am no Obama cheerleader, as I am Independent and I think he is doing many things wrong, but what rights did he strip away from us? Please no libertarian / laissez faire capitalist propaganda. I reject that philosophy out of hand.

Yes and no. Socialism is an economic system, but it requires societal intervention to spread those resources. It involves the money used to buy gm, dodge, banks, etc (perhaps more Marxist) and telling us that is necessary for the general welfare and will be economically profitable for the welfare of all. Economic freedom and political freedom go hand in hand. Government controlled money, production, expenditures, debt, etc are at the expense of the people and they are ignoring the voice of the people to do these things. Are you gonna be on the board of GM and make decisions for millions of Americans, because your opinion probably won't matter to that board. But government officials that spend your money as they please do. Now's it moved on to health care. It's a failed democracy that Thomas Jefferson also warned about. Those guys were on to something, too bad we didn't stick with it.

And don't forget that Marx qouted socialist policies just being the bridge from capitalism to communism....

      GnL,

I wish you would refrain from personal attack

You only embarrass yourself with your immature and irrational displays.

The dude packing a gun was douche.

      I support President Obama 100%.

    • For all you rightwingers, what do you think would have happened to someone who showed up to a GW rally with a gun strapped to their leg? Your illustrious leader who stood tall for the 2nd amendment? And be honest, if not in your post at least with yourself.

First they put people in free speeh pens, second anyone carrying a gun would be grabbed and callled a terrorist and taken to jail immediately. They would be charged with attempting to assinate the president.

These crazies are trying to overthrow our government and they want a fascist theocracy which is totaliltarian and as bad as the old soviet.

Exactly. And if you remember, they weren't even letting anyone but Bush supporters INSIDE the doors of his events. If a person were caught wearing an anti-bush t-shirt or even have an anti-bush bumpersticker on their car, they were escorted out.

    • The guy is holding a sign that shows blood drops watering the "Liberty Tree" what else does he have to do.
this is an edit. So....you beleive that blood needs to be shed then right. Than you go fight this fight and you can use your blood. I beleive we don't need to fight like we are doing and for blood to be spilled is NUTS!

Why are you against him referring to a founding father's statement, exactly as it was intended?

If you would like a history lesson then read about Shay's Rebellion and what led to the comment.

    • "Police say his gun is registered and he can keep it on him as long as it is not concealed."

Pro tip: There is no gun registration, and it doesn't matter if it's concealed or not because he's on private property, if he wasn't he would be arrested for unlawful display of a fire arm.

I, too, have purchased and do own many firearms. I took your words "gun registration" as "concealed carry permit" when I read it. That is my mistake. I do wonder, however, why I was required to have the serial # for my AK Sporter registered at my local shop when I bought it? I live in PA.

    • I find it hysterical that these moronic news people think an assassign would stand around in public, with the gun he plans on killing the president with in full sight!

      Are these people completely stupid?

I am so impressed with their desire to impede state law, and constitutional rights because of a visit from the president.

Idiots. The guy is obviously just making a statement about his own right to bear arms, and waiting to see how AUTHORITY will react to that.

That makes sense, except for the possibility he might be stark raving mad. Someone who has decided to throw their own life away by an assassination attempt might not have logic up to par with your own.

I certainly would not think anyone would think it logical to hang out near where the president is going to be with a gun and a sign with wording that it is time to water the liberty tree, when that reference implies spilling blood unless they were asking for trouble. It would be plain stupid for security or the media to not take notice of that.

"The guy is obviously just making a statement about his own right to bear arms, and waiting to see how AUTHORITY will react to that."

No that is your opinion. It might be correct. You and I don't know, and therefore it is not "obvious". Someone else might say it is obvious that he intended to use that gun because of the implication of the wording on the sign, but that would be an assumption as well. Nothing is obvious in this case. The only one who probably really knows is the man himself.

He's being paid to stand around and look crazy. Why else would he be allowed to stand there with a gun? We know the constitution is just a goddam piece of paper!

Well, GW thought the Constitution is just a goddamned piece of paper. There are others who will vehemently disagree.

      Noxi,

Since he is standing in plain sight, it would be very simple for any secret service man to put him in their own SITE. One wrong move, and he would be swiss cheese.

      Don't ya think?

let's put it this way dude, when is/has it ever been a good idea to mix political turbulence, presidents and fucking weapons? it's not cool for carter, it's not cool for reagan, it's not cool for clinton and it's not cool for obama.

I don't give a damn if he's planning on using it or not he's a fucking idiot for bringing it into such a charged atmosphere and I wouldn't bat an eye if he got arrested preemptively. If he's dumb enough to carry around the president he may WELL be dumb to try and attempt on his life.
