New US Study Affirms Smoked Marijuana Protects Against Cancer.

Despite the recent claim by US Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske, that smoked marijuana has no medical benefits, new research by scientists at several universities, revealed the exact opposite. The population-based case-controlled study of marijuana users, published in the July issue of Cancer Prevention Research Journal, found that "10 to 20 years of marijuana use was associated with a significantly reduced risk of HNSCC" [head and neck squamous cell carcinoma]. That's reduced risk, Mr Kerlikowske.

    • Hmmm...this is the same government that included cigarettes in troop rations and Red Cross packages in WWII. They put them in lifeboat kits, too. They got a generation hooked on cigarettes because they claimed cigarettes were harmless. And you're going to believe this "research"?

Mostly, the US government funds research to prove how bad cannabis is. I don't think they are very happy at the science that shows how beneficial it is.

Frankly, I don't much trust the government, which is beholding to large corporations. I do trust science. BTW, there was no science proving cigarettes were harmless. That was just the pronouncement by the cigarette manufactures.

The US government didnt create this study. This didn't come out of or was bankrolled by NIDA or ONDCP, the govt drug propaganda misinformers.

This came out of Cancer Prevention Research Journal.

Try reading the article before condemning the research.

Furthermore, this is old news to anyone that is knowledgeable about marijuana cancer research.

      unclecharlie,

Do you believe the propaganda? Do you not know the history of the war on drugs and the motivation behind falsely scheduling pot as a schedule I drug to control/arrest the protesters/counter-culture? If the government is misleading us, use your logic now, which side of the argument is the government likely to endorse? We already know the answer to that.

I disagree with a lot of your views, but a lot of them are based on something that can be construed as rational thought - rational given your perspective. But in this case, do you realize that you are siding with the government's (and big tobacco/alcohol) propaganda instead of science, even though you worded it in a way that demonstrates distrust of the government? You are totally on the wrong side. Even if you don't like marijuana for whatever reasons, you just can't deny the truth. Marijuana has medicinal value, and it is nothing like hardcore drugs. It is in fact much less harmful and intoxicating as alcohol.

    • Its obvious that marijuana has medicinal qualities and has been so for decades. Research like this is nothing new.

The drug czar's doesn't want to undermine his office by acknowledging it has such qualities because schedule 1 banned substances are not suppose to have any.

These drug czar's and their ilk aren't stupid, just stubborn.

    • If your every called in for jury duty, never convict for a non-violent drug crime. It's morally wrong and it costs you your tax dollars that could be used to pay for your medical bills in the future.

    • Don't they get that cannabis is a weed! and therefore grows real quickly and some strains have such strong fibers to make paper and rope, plus the nutritional benefits from the plant could put a damper on world hunger!

    • Here in the United States the government system holds its head up high from change and will not do so for reasons of greed and ignorance. Many people with varities of sicknesses have said good things towards the little plant that is the mainstay of my home state of california.

All we can we do is just keep spreading the word and educating the world of the many products and benifits that comes from it.

    • This has been the problem with the war on cannabis all along. Studies which support positive effects from cannabis are not reported nationally. Ordinary Americans do not hear the results of studies, which their tax dollars paid for. Ordinary Americans continue to be spun by their own government.

Trust is earned. Hiding facts, which run contrary to their objectives is just wrong. If cannabis protects against cancer, people should be told. We deserve an honest conversation.
