Gay? Live in India? Trying to get some sex?

If so,
you are risking up to TEN years in prison for what authorities call an "Unnatural Offense".

THAT IS UNTIL -
a recent ruling, which the Delhi High Court affirmed that claim, saying that Section 377 violated basic human rights. The same court, however, had dismissed a similar petition in 2001. It is clear that this latest ruling is a reflection of increased activism by gay rights groups and high profiled supporters like Bollywood actress and Former Miss World Celina Jaitley, along with a more progressive government.

Hot on the heels of gay pride parades in Delhi and Bangalore, which saw the Indian homosexual community and its supporters out in full force and color, this victory gives activists one more reason to celebrate. They were seen on the streets of the capital this morning, distributing sweets and smearing each other with vermillion, the traditional way to mark an auspicious occasion.

"We have finally entered into the 21st Century", claimed Anjali Gopalan, head of the Naz Foundation: a foundation which aimed to sensitize the community to the prevalence of HIV, as well as highlight issues related to Sexuality and Sexual Health. . .

    • Great.

Now for the rest of India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Yeman, Somalia, Sudan, Niger, Morocco, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates, (all of which impose severe penalties a.k.a. death or life imprisonment on convicted or suspected homosexuals), Jamaica, Qatar, Syria, Lebanon, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Guinea, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Belize, Guyana, Turkmenistan, Singapore, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Uzbekistan, numerous other Caribbean countries, and most of Africa. (which imposes fines and/or light jail time for those who happen to fall in love with/have sex with/kiss/etc. the same gender.) As well as a few I've probably missed.

And these are just places you don't have the freedom to love your own gender, much less get married or be free from discrimination.

So this is a small, small baby step in the long marathon of equal gay rights.

    • problem with that is..most who would kick a gay's ass are the the ones who cannot read the 'new law"..

its all cultural..you cant write something on a piece of paper and expect the masses to follow..

      Yes you can....

Refer to the fact that people are now okay with women voting, for one. And there aren't too many people up in arms over desegregation or the abolition of slavery, either...

When argued with, you'll ultimately say you're not against Gays, yet you chime in negatively on every Gay Rights topic here. You'll always be on the wrong side of history.

      it would appear that you
      wasted your own time
      by submitting a post.
      &
      if you are reading this
      that means you actually
care if someone replies, or not.

      which in turn means that
      you are just seeking
      attention.

      good luck.

you must be holding your breath awaiting the repeal of american antigay laws. all I mean is that this shouldn't have even been an issue from the start... as for example, where I live its actually a crime to have sex with your sock on... a crime. now, who the fuck would go to all the trouble to make that a law and why would they care if ANYONE has sex with sock on? I think gay sex is no different.

    • Good news, but they're SO behind the times.

Can you believe that until 2003, sodomy (gay or straight) was illegal in Texas?! It still boggles my mind that people can be so stupid.

It's almost as mind-blowing to me as Blacks not being able to marry Whites until 1967.

What I want to know is why it takes SO LONG to get rid of such ignorant and mean-spirited laws... Don't Ask, Don't Tell.... The Defense of Marriage Act.... etc.

I'm glad Sotomayor will be a champion for Gay Rights in this country! Good luck to India =)

      Hey Godsnliberals, aka "fucking idiot":

In Lawrence v. Texas, the case where the US Supreme Court struck down Texas' sodomy laws, the two men were in the PRIVACY of their own home.

"Responding to a reported weapons disturbance in a private residence, Houston police entered petitioner Lawrence’s apartment and saw him and another adult man, petitioner Garner, engaging in a private, consensual sexual act. Petitioners were arrested and convicted of deviate sexual intercourse in violation of a Texas statute forbidding two persons of the same sex to engage in certain intimate sexual conduct."

Stop spreading your untruths and distortions. Asshole.

@ GNL, the issue is not about poking the butt hole in public, its about having the right to be with a partner of the opposite sex in public holding hands and showing affection, not having sex.

Plus ditto regarding the Lawrence vs Texas Supreme court decision.

This is precisely why a federal Marriage law protecting the rights of gay citizens to wed is what we need, instead of this state by state strategy, because of ignorant views like assuming that if it were legalized then homos would be having sex in the streets. Its just plain ridiculous to draw such conclusions.

With all of those silly restrictions, especially the 1967 law, why do people think the USA is such a free country?
Our neighbors to the north (Canada) have their country recognizing same sex marriage, and yet we are still struggling with the issue in most states

    • Yeah, I'd read about this a minute ago. It's a shmae it's only in New Dehli but a start's a start. I never even realized one could be sent to prison for being gay in India. i hope that doesn't give anybody any ideas over here. Our prison system is jacked up and overcrowded as it is.
