Popular science writers and advocates Chris Mooney and Sheril Kirshenbaum have renewed their request for those described as "New Atheists" to play nice. In a recent article Mooney and Kirshenbaum ask the question: Must science declare a holy war on religion? Mooney and Kirshenbaum want to avoid the holy war, not because the New Atheists are wrong, but because the New Atheists are bad for the business of science.

Should the New Atheists shut up for the good of science?

well technically........i could just ask for forgiveness and then god would have to forgive me. isnt that why jesus had himself killed? to pay the price, for "our" sins?

    • see what really pisses me off is that so many of you 'idiots' (I'm quoting someone else's use) think you justify your worldview merely critizing another. At least I know even the Jehovah's Witness aren't going to come and begin to make an invitation first by saying "Well were here because y'know atheism is a real piece of shit..." take it to heart.

i think what pisses you off is knowing that you are pissed off.

me, I'm mocking your blind faith, and you are getting pissed off because you feel that i make a valid point and you may have anger management issues.

have you ever stopped and considered the fact that i am pushing your evangelical buttons because you are allowing me to? Not that i am "proseletising" to you.

    • i didnt know i was one until now, thanks!

      why do i think i am a neo-atheist? i think its because i enjoy making Christians truly reflect on the things they are saying to total strangers. i love to ask;

"are you sure jesus is the only way?"
"are you sure you deserve to go to heaven?"
"are you sure its possible to go to heaven without ever dieing?"
"are you sure you want to live forever?"
"are you telling me i deserve to go to hell........ compared to you?"

i was raised an evangelical Lutheran and now, through my own introspection for the past 9 years, i have enjoyed confronting any christian on the validity of Christian theology. I dont go door to door, but sometimes i'd like to. there have been enough victims of that delusional IDEA and i feel like i'm just "saving them".

and certainly that's no more true in regard to uniMatrix0's respect for religious values. he's intolerant because he'd rather suck and deep throat on it like a porno star. well "to each his own" I'm sure is plausibly somewhere in uniMatrix0's playbook, even if I don't get to see it. But let's see if *he* reads it.

    • Stephen Jay Gould on Science and Religion

"A lot of people think there's an intrinsic conflict between Christianity and evolution, but there isn't. Religion is about ethics and values, and science is about facts. You need both of them, but they don't interact very much."

From: Jeremy Manier, "Stephen Jay Gould Takes a New Swing at Explaining Evolution." Chicago Tribune (Dec. 2, 1996). (c)1996, Chicago Tribune.

"To say it for all my colleagues and for the umpteenth millionth time (from college bull sessions to learned treatises): science simply cannot adjudicate the issue of God's possible superintendence of nature. We neither affirm nor deny it; we simply can't comment on it as scientists."

From: "Impeaching a Self-Appointed Judge" (Review of Philip E. Johnston, Darwin on Trial), Scientific American (July 1992): 119. (c)1992, Scientific American.

Religion is about ignorance and superstition.

I can respectfully handle the blind insistence one believes in no god, but the supposed "anti-religious" sentiment is such peurile crap. You don't believe in Santa Claus either, but would you really adjure small children with as much disdain? "the corporate establishments at large 'dehumanize' (lol) the 'suffering' Santa, Rudolph and The Snow Man put all these children through..."

yeah, the general atheist attitude i find IS quite that pathetic.

    • It's a dual sided coin, one that I wouldn't say should even be considered really. Religious people somehow being held in check from mass slaughter just because of religion? No. Atheists killing all religious people because they have no absolute standard of morality? No to that as well. Those two shouldn't be seriously considered, but if you are, you have to think of both.

it makes that ideology CHEAP AND SHALLOW..well of course young ignorant people who passes themselves as liberal athiests had taken over without any concept of what they are fighting for..

bottomline..without fear of god, what is stopping all these "nutjobs' from killing the elite liberals???

    • Interesting post, "Unscientific America" is a good read.

On one hand it is an argument about the PR of science, among various scientific type; on the other hand it is a much larger argument about a collective cultural narrative.

Stuff like this will not go away anytime soon. This kind of debate will keep re-emerging.

    • You know, the underlying root problem that exist within the polarization of the concepts MAN has concocted concerning god and science/evolution are indeed fictitious by NATURE....We are ruled by words, numbers, and symbols...which are by self evident observation simply, previous creations of man...For instance the word god...is just another previously created word by someone exactly like you..a mere manipulation of vibration induced into the human psyche to..........play on your polarized mind..your choice to be bias...this is so that neither side ever perceives the bigger picture, which rest outside both paradigms of ideas....Evolution only is a description of how life has evolved on this planet...and the concept of god..dares to to tell the story of why...The answers are within.

so your game is rhetoric huh? remember just because some human made up the word for a dog doesn't mean that a dog isn't real and is only in the mind of humans.

and as feeble as our descriptions of the universe are (these words, and these letters, and pictures, and ideas), they're all we have to work with. I believe that regardless of our choice in symbols or descriptions, some things like hate or love or evolution or me or you... are real and somethings like nothingness or god or unicorns or gnomes are not.

theres a thought. how could there be nothingness except within the mind?

funny you used the word dog..to reply about my comment on polarization and god..anyways i do see your point but mine is,that labels create a polarization of thoughts...take your dog for example...here we call it a dog and see the animal as man's best friend and in china they call it a gǒu and see it as a meal...which one is true about the animal?...both statements are true and false at the same time...its the same with the god theory...one's perception can elevate to a state where the dualistic nature is taken on only by choice.....my bad i kinda went off typing there..but like this whole topic..it doesnt matter...

The same goes for god...some call it god and see it as a higher power or their creator....some call it nature and see it as divine events unfolding...

      some see nothing.

Those who believe that what has already been created..is it...are the ones who see nothing...we are creators...but we've been tricked into just becoming repeaters...its actually pretty sickening...btw philosophical thinking is my game...whats yours?

there are as many reasons to disbelieve evolution as well, notwithstanding the stacatto fossil record they promise is being "completed" more and more each day, but has been literally fraught with faked BULLSHIT in the stark absence of anything UNQUESTIONABLY significant. lol I mean the best example they can give are mutations which effectively steadily DEGRADE the gene pool, diseases. Mutations yes, but never onward upward beneficial aparatus and massive organ overhauls by random chance events evolution, no way, it doesn't exist. check out the Piltman Down or whatevertf that thing was, it was hacked and JACKED. There've been others too. These aren't "Isolated" events in the natural self-preservation instincts of evolutionists. No they have their notions and the facts aren't going to interfere LOL =D I've been learning about the human genome. Interesting.

and this link, "Is the Human Embryo Essentially a Fish with Gills?" gives a great ending.. ;)

      King Solomon (Ecclesiastes 11:5):

"As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things."

you make perfect sense metalcookie'. the idea that science and religion form a dichotomy in lieu of a duality is bullshit even the traditionally religious can come to see. both really are thriving. but who do you REALLY see fostering such unwelcomeness?

and I still believe even atheists have a right to believe what they want to believe, even if I disagree, and even if they don't even agree on atheism amongst themselves lol =P I recall reading where Gould pissed off Dawkins...but then the real bomb imho for this laughable "New Atheism" is Antony Flew, but there is much of long-standing atheism at odds with the "new" atheism of those like Dawkins, Dennet, Harris and Hitchens. imho, if you don't know who Antony Flew you shouldn't even call yourself an atheist =P hehe...

    • Oh man. I can feel another huge religious flight coming again...but dariusvons, as a fellow member of "these retards" I think you're taking your case a bit too far. Why would religious people not want to continue to expand science? As Newton put it, it's the "study of God's handiwork." I do fully believe in the great sacrifice Jesus Christ made for humanity, but I also have a real interest in what's in this world, in the stars, and the human body. Science and religion are compatible, it would be a rather large atheist mistake to determine the two cannot coexist.

how could one possibly be in favor of scientific progress and still hold the belief that jesus was born from a virgin? or how can one belive story of genesis when it doesn't explain meteors or other planets, the moon, the seasons, different races (hell asia isn't even mentioned, so where did the japanese come from?)... dinosaurs, DNA, germs, evoltion, quantum mechanics... we've come a long way in understanding the world in which we've found ourselves. all the while religion has done everything it can to stanch and inhibit its development, going so far as burning and torturing people who dared to say the earth is not flat, and possibly revolves around the sun.... or that life may be out on another planet. yes, religion and science are very incompatable. science looks at the world and says 'how can we explain this?', religion on the other hand looks at the books and says what in the world can we find to support these ignorant myths?... then they simply deny the facts of the world which contradict their books.

"study the works of god" newton was a very pious and devout christian. yes, newton was not atheist.

Darius you paint with way too broad a brush. As if everything some individual or group of religious people have done at some point and time in the last few thousand years represents religion and all religious people. They don't. They represent themselves. As if the Soviet Union and China represent you because they are officially atheist.

On another point, if you don't believe that much of the science that supports the evolutionary model is greatly interpretive, I doubt you know as much about your own theory as you seem to suggest.

PS After re-reading your reply Darius, I'm curious why you bring up the issue of what the Bible has to say about the numerous issues you mentioned. I don't mean to say this in a rude manner, but you clearly don't know anything about the topic.

and clearly the bible is not a scientific text. it is a much more clever read than you'll hear of Darius'. Read it and you'll find the bedrock of Western civilization in Christianity. you wouldn't be here now in this democracy if it wasn't for Christianity. people like you call quick remembrance to the sufferings of Galileo but the godly have long put to rest their assumptions for heliocentricity. that transformation was over what in like a century or less??? heh. But since the days of Aristotle, it was science for like a thousand years that demanded an infinite universe. Even Newton had accepted this (it was convenient "scientifically"...they didn't have to explain a few things) But it was the religious who CONSISTLY maintained there HAD to be a beginning!!! And only until the 1960s did "science" finally catch up to the truth! Yes we have our faults, but we have a better track record (oops! lol) and much better "turn-around" time (as so evidenced with such quick edits lol) =P

    • I just wonder if god is their answer to everything, why bother studying or even learning anything at all? really, if god is their end all be all answer why bother doing anything at all? it's all in god hands anyway right?

also when these retards protest and fight against evolution, I wonder why they don't fight against teaching where babies come from in health classes, since that in itself contradicts their theory of emacualte conseption... just a thought.

Well immaculate conception only occurred in Mary according to most Christian sects, especially Catholicism. Mary's conception of Jesus is considered to be a miracle. Not very scientific, but that's the only case that it's actually ever mentioned. Everyone else does it the good ol' fashioned way, and Christians recognize that, so I guess that's why most Christians are alright with lessons on reproduction.

Retards...hmm... Religious people make up the vast majority of the world's populace. It can be rightly assumed that a decent proportion of any large group would include a significant amount of ignorant or very slow-minded people. Statistically speaking, it would also rightly be stated that a decent proportion of a group represented in the billions would be a hell of alot smarter than you also. Frankly, based on your comment, I really doubt you know very much about theological philosophy.

You seem to imply that all people who don't believe in the evolutionary model must be stupid or believe in this for faith-based reasons alone. Unfortunately, this perception is based on mass media usually featuring these types on their programs. I have reasons for why I disagree and none of them are from the Bible.

    • It depends on what we are talking about.

Frequently words like "closed minded" and "intolerance" are thrown around at atheists for denying certain aspects of religious belief but I really think there are some things that should be spoken out against and I'm SURE it's not just atheists who think so.

For example, we should not "shut up" when the proposal is made that Creationism should be taught alongside evolution. That is truly bad for the "business of science."

We should not shut up when some religious groups call the LGBT community sinners and ignore all research based around genetics. That's bad for the business of society!

We should not shut up when women are being treated as less than equals, being stoned to death for petty grievances or forced into lifestyles they have no choice in.

We should not shut up when churches attempt to exorcise "demons" like addiction or homosexuality, or when religious people refuse to give their children medical services and insist that god will help them.

All of these examples are pulled straight out of recent news events and headlines. There are many more out there. Do I think Atheists should attempt "conversion" tactics, or make ever believer feel like an idiot? Absolutely not; the level of conversation and it's direction are up to the people talking- some people are more open to having their beliefs questioned and some are not. However to accept every wild idea about reality with no proof to avoid offending the tender feelings of the highly religious is not "open minded", "playing nice"or good for science; it's insane and dangerous to humanity.

Save humanity from what, exactly? Generally, yes, if I knew that my death could save humankind from something (extinction, etc.), I would gladly give it. However, that's a fantasy scenario. I think you'd need to suffer from a messiah complex to really take that scenario seriously.
