Those "guatemalans, peruvians, el salvadorians, etc " you speak of are not "all" Legal.Sorry to burst your bubble. They prolly get the same I D's as the Mexicans.
There was a documentary The Train De La Muerte. It shows the plight and deaths of those south of Mexico. The people aiding them also get punished for doing so.These people that you believe are legal have journied twice as far to make a life of value for themselves.People blame Mexicans cause they are directly on the border, but these other Latinos are no different. - 2 years ago

Im with hunzedog on the labor elements of this-
[in response to] ciarabriana
Seriously; "jobs out there only a lot of Americans think they are above the work"-----GET REAL
Its all about the wage and working conditions/ occupational safety enforcement,.....
IMPORTED PEASANT SERFS UNDERMINE THE POWER AND STATUS OF AMERICAN LABOR.
Pay a reasonable living wage, and overtime when its worked, and actually monitor the chemicals in the air, HAVE WORKMAN'S COMP,.....hell, we HAVE the workers. Capitalists just don't want to PAY them.
In regards to the legitimate human concerns of "illegal"
HISPANIC LABOR---As long as we REALLY "let em in"; treat them as honorary citizens in all ways-NOT DEPENDANT ON EMPLOYMENT- for as long as they remain here. No coercive force on the side of employers is acceptable. If its a humanitarian cause,....damn well make it humanitarian. I don't really see it as the same. Most people put barbed wire and fences on their property for some form of control and protection, and it usually doesn't choke or trap wildlife (usually being key here, barbed wire is a bit different, but most animals don't get trapped, merely deterred). Plastic jugs can trap small animals, and pollute the environment. Wildlife officials mentioned that they should at least confine the jugs so that they don't end up in random places.
It's a nice point, but the affect on the environment is very different. Fence posts and barbed wire don't blow around, and don't end up on someone else's property.

Great response, corndog67. The realities of the immigration situation are backbreakingly hard to face, whether you are a Mexican worker trying to get a job in San Diego or a border cop doing your job. Your description of the state of things in Santa Maria is the best evidence I've seen that we need to get real about the human costs of a border between a rich nation and an increasingly poor nation.
The drug trade us not only tearing Mexico apart, destroying communities, families, and individuals, it is growing stronger and extending its tentacles to many towns north of the border. The sad fact is that millions of Mexicans have no real alternatives other than to get into the U.S. or get into the drug trade just to survive.
The lady who responded earlier to this post who described her husband having to live in the bus he drove in Mexico starkly illustrates what is typical for so many people, and your post deepens the understanding of what;s happening. No sloganeering from bloated, self-aggrandizing egomaniacs like Lou Dobbs is going to fix what's broken, and a soft heart will not sway the will of the callous and rapacious drug lords who want only money and power.
We all have to face the fact that this continent has no natural borders that will protect us from each other's appetites and problems, and until we accept that we all may have to commit ourselves to doing something other than blabbing on blogs, things will just get worse.
I suggest that Americans try to learn more about what is happening inside Mexico in order to appreciate the scope of the problem, and I suggest that honest and committed people in Mexico must get our monetary, military, and moral support in their fight for decent living conditions. This will involve our refusing to back crooked Mexican politicians whose corporate interests foster the deteriorating situation. It will involve bringing our civil and military resources to bear in finding and capturing coyotes who exploit and smuggle in immigrants. It will involve having the courage to give up our incessant appetite for cocaine, methamphetamines, and Latin American marijuana, in order to starve the producers. And, perhaps most of all, it will involve recognizing that the people of Mexico are our brothers and sisters, and they need our help to escape this misery.
There is no right wing or left wing solution to any of this, and to take a position behind a closed mind is to guarantee failure. I hope you have neighbors whom you can talk with to address the problems in your town., and I hope everyone who was touched by this posting will do something positive to make things better for people who cannot escape mexico without dying of thirst.

I know that you state the fact that continents have no "natural borders" but they do have state borders, and currently there is no country or state in the world that has "open" borders which allow free access and free crossing, and there is many good reasons why.
By opening your borders to anybody, you have no clue of their past or their history. True, they could be a family or an innocent person looking for a new life but many times it is criminals and people with shady backgrounds. If you take the time to research the demographics and the statistics of how many illegal immigrants are currently in federal prisons, you'll be disheartened at the results. Now, take the amount of tax money and resources spent on those particular prisoners, and add that to the fact that illegal immigrants do not pay taxes, then include the money that corporations hog up by exploiting them and paying them poor wages. With all of that, go ahead and include some aid that the government does provide for them and the housing that they occupy. All of these factors equal to an economic melt down of this country that would indefinitely cause famine and deaths for our own citizens. And what about all of the immigrants who got here legally? It isn't really fair for them since they worked and waited for their citizenship.
I understand the statement you are stressing that they cannot opt for a better life unless they go into drug trade or go into the U.S., but you forgotten the third option - revolution. They are perfectly able to implement a revolution in their own country. I am very aware of the country's history of revolutions but they are completely able to do so because it is the majority that is suffering, not just a minority.
If you think we are a rich nation - think again. We are a nation that is roughly seperated by two classes, poor and rich. The poverty line in the U.S. is increasing with coporate free-market capitalists controlling the banks and basically deeming themselves as the ruling class. And if we were able to allow open border immigration, we will just be about to par with Mexico as far as poverty goes. - 2 years ago

Close the border, deport all the illegals here now and start some sort of guest worker program. I live in Santa Maria, CA, home of more illegal aliens than you can count. More hit and run accidents. More unlicensed, uninsured, unregistered vehicles. More people using the Emergency room for regular doctor visits, and then claiming indigency, and not paying. The highest teenage pregnancy rate in the nation (anchor babies). A very high crime rate. A very high gang member rate. Lots of violent crime. Lots of weed. Lots of meth. Lots of heroin. And it's pretty much come to be accepted here. What was once a nice town is turning into a third world ghetto. And the politicians aren't doing a damn thing about it.

I think everyone should go out there and put water in bottles. Hell I'd go if I lived out there. I would spend money just to do it and document it via youtube.
And I would write things on those bottles.
Do not think for one moment that if you type your disgust here that it matters. If people who can got together and did what he did in mass...it would make a difference and get news involved it'll embarrass the state for being so stupid to begin with.
YES the border SUCKS at being protected. I blamed Bush and now I can blame Obama. SUCKS....oh come on in we don't care if you are bad or good....cross right on over.
It's HORRIBLE.
HOWEVER...the mass majority are not vile and therefore do not (no matter how stupid they are for crossing into a desert, because that is stupid no matter how you justify it) deserve to die. They deserve hospitality and even though it's like inviting a trespasser on your land in for a cup of water...it is a nice and right thing to do.

Letting someone die because they are breaking the law is inhumane. Aiding and abetting is against the law and far good reason. If you think the people of our country are polarized over health care wait until the debate starts over immigration enforcement/reform.
It would seem that the rational solution would be to put enough federal officers out to catch people crossing illegally. Busting someone over keeping folks alive is a harsh solution to the problem. - 2 years ago

If you have never crossed the mexican picket line to go to work, you dont know what you are talking about. everybody else that comes to this country learns to speak the language and tries to get along with people. As one of the last americans on the construction site i know how they use strong arm tactics, and will work for a third of what should be paid. illegal is illegal. those mexicans you love so much would just as soon throw you in a pot and eat you as to help an american. but we bend over backwards to please them....fuck them all !!

Well "Magic6435", currently no state or country allows free access across the borders and there's very good reason to why. Do me a favor, do a statistics research on the demographics of how many illegal immigrants are currently in U.S. prisons - and I assure you they're for bigger scale crimes than this "water jug" bullshit. And what makes you think that all of the unskilled laborers will find jobs? They already don't pay taxes, so they pretty much have a good chance of contributing NOTHING to society. The economy will pretty much collapse and poverty will soar high in the country. Do your research first before throwing out claims. You may be "passionate" and "Kind" but know that if we open borders, then you'd be screwing over your fellow citizens and possibly send the country into a famine.

So SICK of people talking about how this is wrong. This man got the lighter side of what he deserved. They come here because illegals know they are fully capable of financially raping our country. Of course its also to do with the equally stupid employers who give these bums a chance to make our money and send it to another country.
Besides there are too many in this world already and we prolong life by a few years for what..so you can spend just a couple more years ignoring your grandparents I work next to a dumbass company who employs illegals with fake socials and the whole nine(meaning they get the welfare too). Evry morning I hear their meetings and it sounds like ignorance. So if a few hundred, or thousand die tryin to get here..then that's extra jobs for the AMERICANS WHO WERE BORN HERE !!!..TAKE A LESSON FROM OTHER COUNTRIES WHERE PEOPLE LEARN ENGLISH BEFORE THEY COME HERE SO THEY DO NOT BECOME A BURDEN ON OUR SOCIETY..if you can even read english!!..yes, no and shaking your head is not english.!.! - 2 years ago

Majority of people think immigrants jump the fence just because they're too lazy to become an American citizen. That may be the case with some, but it actually takes many years to become a citizen,(if they're approved to begin with).

Then what is that to say for the people who take the trouble to go through the process of becoming a legal immigrant? And by break, do you mean exploit their labor and allow a good percentage of them to cause crimes in our country only to be deported back to theirs so they hop back over and do it again?

Dillusional and not statistical.Do you seriously believe that these immigrants are rapists, etc.?Most ones I've seen in jails and court are there for either being too drunk or driving W/O a licence.Do the homework.

Delusional and not statistical? I'm sorry, what relevance does that have to my criticism? I believe the original poster said "I would rather violate all of the laws in the world to save a fellow human being from dying", and I rebutted with "Even if the laws (that he would violate) included rape, drugs, murder...?"
But let's take the focus to you. "All the ones I've seen." That's great, but you don't speak for a whole population. And I did do the homework. Refer to my reply to your post above where you elaborate about your husband.

Chaining the jugs is only going to allow ICE to monitor the chains and arrest the desperste immagrants. My husband came here from Mexico illegally,He now speaks Engligh fluently and has worked hard for the 8+ years that we have been together. He left Mex.City and the strories of his life there are horrific. He was placed in life threatening (kill or be killed) situatons and lived on the bus he worked on for $10 a day.He has no criminal history and can't get a licence so he rides a bike every morning at 5:30 AM to work.I tried to get him legal and payed they fees to the INS,but was told he would be forced to return to Mex. to await approval leaving myself and our children alone in this recession. So you people who see grown Mex.men on bikes or arresting them for petty crimes just know they are feeding the mouths of babes.

Thank you for sharing your truth. My grandparents were immigrants, and they worked very hard to survive and raise their sons. If they had not sacrificed, I could never have afforded this computer I am using.
Another thing; every time I eat fresh fruit or vegetables, I thank God for immigrants who do the hard labor so that I might have a healthy life. Denying water to another human being is not only against Christ's teaching, it is morally wrong in any religion. Making compassion a crime is a stupid and sad commentary on how some people think.
I hope you and your family endure and prosper. We need good Americans like you to make our country strong.

Look the trials and tribulations that your hubby has gone through are not special..it even happens here, thanks to the efforts of the ones who were here before us and us as well we do not have prolific problems like in mexico.I have been in situations with guns and real violence and not stories that people have told me. I'm all for people coming here and making the best of their lives but you better get your priorities straight, not cross the border and live the same life you lived. Progression is key to bettering your family. My father came from the phillipines and my mothers family is three generations from italy, both had no problem learning english before they came here and were well prepared to hit the ground running when they got here with their own businesses. I don't need research because I have lived it in this country and my family has lived it on both sides.

As much as I wish it were so, not all illegal immigrants are law-abiding responsible adults riding on bicycles. I'm sorry, but your story doesn't make me feel any empathy for you because I've seen the complete opposite side. Illegal immigrants cause a lot of crime to the U.S., most cases are rape, murder, or hard drug trafficking. And what do we do? Deport them back to their country just for them to come back up and do it again. I'm not against immigrants who go through the proper way, but I am against illegal immigrants. What's that to say for all the people who worked so hard to go through the normal process when somebody just cheats their way to the front, not pay taxes, and is told that he should be granted automatic citizenship? If their home country is that bad, then they as humans should have the power and right to a revolution. And a lot of people say that their life is so much better "picking fruit" and "working in sweatshops" when that is just as bad as denying them citizenship. You guys are going to argue about human rights when you're going to let them be exploited for their labor? It's just a bunch of tripe to me.

I am not seeking Empathy only the truth of what I know through experience. The rapists, etc. you speak of never lived near me and I lived in Long Beach,Ca for a few years. The criminals I saw there were born here and not the Immigrants that are supporting their loved ones. You are mistaken and statistics show this. You are what drives the continued hate and prejiduce. My story is one of many struggling to keep FAMILY together. My husband does not live on the system and he pays taxes that he never gets back.I do care because our beautiful children deserve the right to have their father, Mexican or not.He is who I fell in love with and he works harder than most men I've seen that are born here. These people deserve humanity.

I am in no way speaking against your husband, I am sure that he is an admirable and respectable person. The fact I am stressing is that not every illegal is identical to your spouse.
You say "Statistics prove this" What statistics? A citation is needed. Please show methodogical evidence rather than fringe research and hearsay.
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/nifcjs.pdf
http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2006/3/27/114208.shtml
"In March 2000, Congress made public Department of Justice statistics showing that, over the previous five years, the INS had released over 35,000 criminal aliens instead of deporting them. Over 11,000 of those released went on to commit serious crimes, over 1,800 of which were violent ones [including 98 homicides, 142 sexual assaults, and 44 kidnappings".
By stating this, what makes it apparent that I have prejuidice and hatred? Everything I have been stated are the cold, hard facts. I'm not against immigrants, I'm against unspeculated illegal immigration - and for good reasons.
For most people to get a "green card," they have to go through a medical review and screening to determine possible diseases and prevent epidemics. With illegals, this does not happen:http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-693.pdf
Between 1980 and 2000, there is evidence of wage depression resulting from illegal immigration - 3.7% of loss. Mainly because they do not get paid the same as us and companies take advantage of this. If the loss were to be any bit more drastic, poverty levels will shoot and more than likely a famine will occur.

(Scroll down to Figure 2)
So next time before you decide what would be the short-term humanitarian thing, think about the long-term humanitarian effects it will cause amongst other people as well.
Your response.

This is nothing but racist hate and bigotry.
Some Americans would rather see an illegal immigrant die than make a few bucks picking some vegetables or working in a sweat shop..

Are you serious? I'm just curious to see what relevancy does illegal immigration policies have to racism, bigotry, or xenophobia for that matter. Do you even know the definitions for those words? Hence the term "illegal," meaning there's a legal way to do that.
And I'm pretty sure that they'll just be flattered to be showered by your kindness of saying they should just be paid a few bucks picking fruit or "working in some sweat shop." Don't speak unless you've taken some History, Economics, and Ethics classes. - 2 years ago

If you scroll back up and read my post, you will clearly see that there is no mention of the water jug story or my stance on it. I was just curious to see the logic behind your accusations that immigration policies are tied in with racism, hate, and bigotry. I was even more curious to see you give an explaination on your assumption that giving them a better life is synonymous with "picking some vegetables" or "working in a sweatshop." You basically want to give them the same jobs that is one of the primary reasons they're escaping Mexico in the first place?

Since I am married to a Latino, I am obviously biased in this case! But in this story, I read that an official (opponent) had actually offered a compromise in allowing them to "chain" the jugs and they chose instead to bluster and try to grandstand? This seems like a little pride may have come before the fall? Other than that...Open the FKNG borders already would ya! We (Caucasian Americans) ripped the Mexican people off for all their farmland and now won't even let them provide for their lives from it?

Froze? You mean at the border with British Columbia who has been having record high temperatures all summer, or in Ottawa, where, despite having the crappiest summer ever, still averages 25 degrees Celsius on most days?
Sorry, I know you were probably poking fun, it's just one issue that I find a LOT of Americans are ignroant about. Once during high school, I went down with a school group for a competition in Seattle. We won, and the MC while introducing us to the rest of the groups asked us if we were finding it hot. My teacher looked puzzled as we were merely from a town near Vancouver, and said no. The MC asked, well isn't it quite a bit colder up there? My teacher replied, "Well no, it's about the same, sometimes hotter [because my town is an hour inland from Vancouver]". The MC looked genuinely surprised, as if the border somehow magically and drastically would cause a huge contrast in weather between two places only 2 hours apart.
And that's not the only time I've been asked about the weather by Americans while visiting the U.S. lol It's not a particularly important issue, it's just more amazing to me how persistent a misconception it is. It usually makes me chuckle, but at the same time it irks me. Like, you know the majority of the population in Canada lives within an hour or two of the U.S.-Canada border? * But like I said, you were probably just poking fun so I'll stop harrassing you now. lol

I've been to Toronto and it's awesome there. But I got to school near Albany so I understand why people ask if it gets cold. I think is merely poking fun (like asking a person from Mexico if it's cold here.)
Back to the issue: Serious Ouch. But you can't just 'tear down a border'. That wouldn't work out to well.
