Fla. doctor ousted after denouncing doughnuts

Image
WakeUpPeople
Dr. Jason Newsom railed against burgers, french fries, fried chicken and sweet tea in his campaign to promote better eating in a part of the country known as the Redneck Riviera. He might still be leading the charge if he had only left the doughnuts alone.

A 38-year-old former Army doctor who served in Iraq, Newsom returned home to Panama City a few years ago to run the Bay County Health Department and launched a one-man war on obesity by posting sardonic warnings on an electronic sign outside:

"Sweet Tea Liquid Sugar."

"Hamburger Spare Tire."

"French Fries Thunder Thighs."

He also called out KFC by name to make people think twice about fried chicken.

Then he parodied "America Runs on Dunkin'," the doughnut chain's slogan, with: "America Dies on Dunkin'."

Some power players in the Gulf Coast tourist town decided they had had their fill.

A county commissioner who owns a doughnut shop and two lawyers who own a new Dunkin' Donuts on Panama City Beach turned against him, along with some of his own employees, Newsom says. After the lawyers threatened to sue, his bosses at the Florida Health Department made him remove the anti-fried dough rants and eventually forced him to resign, he says.

    • Dunkin' Donuts are kosher, fried in 100% vegetable oil. Their various donut flours are kosher but the problem is a lot of the shops don't filter the fryerlator oil but twice a year or something. That's the weak toxic link in their chain. And that creme they put in the shells, both vanilla and chocolate? It's very expensive to make correctly with Heavenly Whites so most the stores don't use it. They simply use more hi-ratio shortening instead, to save money. Vanilla flavored shortening, not even adding real vanilla either.

That's what franchises will do for ya.

    • Haven't eaten doughnuts in over a decade . He was right . Can't they be made in a less toxic way ? Not partially hydrogenated , ect ... I can do it with cookies , but really I don't bake that well .

    • Mwahahaha! He was right, donuts will destroy you! Jason Newsom tried to warn us, he tried to tell us of their evil plans, but they found out and took him down. It's only a matter of time before they take over the world!

    • I think that the Florida doctor was mostly right in his ways, except when he started to throw out donuts in staff meetings, and replaced all candy bars in the vending machine with peanuts. He needs to let Americans choose by their own free will what they choose to eat. It may seem as if the only way to stop the obesity epidemic is to forcibly take these unhealthy foods off the shelves and/or vending machines, but in the end, we are a free country with the freedom to make our own choices.

Anyone else find it scary that liberals want to tell us how to run our lives, yet get so upset when someone tells them how to run theirs?

Dr Newsome is typical of the left. A nut, Nazi, hater. My God! we must fear for the lives of all Donut Makers. That was sarcasm folks, I was making fun of liberals and their hyperbolic rhetoric.

Strange that someone WHO IS EXACTLY the type of person who will run Obamacare was fired. Oh wait, no it's not.

Hey, dead on with the sarcasm is true. This Donut Maker was practically erased by American doctors, not donuts. Too bad my last name wasn't Hawkings or Einstein then the doctors would have tripped all over themselves to help lower my 245/140+ blood pressure they left go for 3 years....

Yep. When your blood pressure # starts reaching your weight (280) that's when the fireworks start inside. Capillaries start exploding in your lungs, brain.

And a few other important places. I had colon cancer try to start after that, lasted almost two years. I stopped it with Oxy-Nectar and hyaluronic acid. But it left me with many internal hemorrhoids but thank God a big tapeworm started eating them all up, cleaned me out better than any doctor just like using leaches or fly maggots.

But then the d^mn tapeworm having feasted on my blood decided to start chewing away at the inside of my intestine. Getting gnawed on made me kind of mad so I found some old prescription suppositories, mixed them with Protopic, Three Antibiotic ointment and some very hot Capsaicin ointment in a base of petroleum jelly.

One instantly dead tapeworm. And I can eat doughnuts without being interrupted.

I never depend on or use my Medicare and Humana
coverage unless they carry me in on a stretcher.

    • Dr. Newsome is just another one of those people who want to warn us about the dangers of trans-fat foods, and it is sad that he lost his job over it. There is a larger issue, and that is that all of these unhealthy snacks will continue to over-burden our already strained healthcare system. These and other artery-clogging foods lead to obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and a host of other diseases which lead to expensive medical interventions, surgeries, and increased medical premiums and co-payments. So, while a person may have the freedom and right to eat whatever they choose, still, this is a situation that if it is not held in check by presenting healthier alternatives, may very well affect us all in the worst possible way leading to a health epidemic.

    • sgwhites has spoken great wisdom. To have superior physical and mental health we have to eat challenging foods once in a while. He points up a great truth! Since the invention of the evil AIR CONDITIONER we have entered through a doorway of evil health conditions because we altered our environment to stop sweating, the healthiest thing of all being sweating during sex.

Sweating through the skin aids the kidneys!

We got heatpumps and stopped sweating, an evil for which we are paying DEARLY. Cancer cells have a high metabolic rate, so when our body heats up it kills off cancer cells. We all need to throw open our windows, throw the Evil AC Human Libido Killer machine out in the streets and proclaim to the top of our lungs WE AREN'T GOING TO TAKE THIS EVIL TEMPERATURE SAMENESS TREATMENT ANY LONGER.

Gravity man, I've tried to explain this to my housemate, and he thinks I'm absolutely nuts. I told him, "If you drink more water and let your body sweat every once in a while you won't be as uncomfortable in the heat." He does not get it.

And call me racist or whatever, but white people are not as comfortable in hot temperatures. Their genes are not designed that way.

    • Gravity_Man:

Well, his aversion to water drinking may come from all the increased public awareness of water having so many chemicals and even prescription drug chemicals that have filtered down into the water table. Then a couple weeks ago they were saying how biphenyl plastics were used in bottled water... and that during trucking to the stores sometimes gets the plastic heated up, releasing even more biphenyl into the water.

We white people are sensitive to being poisoned. It isn't "racist" to recognize genetic differences from different genetic pools. Uhm, I saw a water filtering device a bit larger than a coffee pot being sold on TV that would probably be good for both of you to have. But I don't have a link.

The machine filters water through some minerals I think was how it worked, and they said the taste was wonderful. It's sad how we have have lost so much from what used to be common knowledge. When people used to crawl outta bed and get out in the morning fresh air, collect the eggs, trudge behind hoses plowing for 3-4 hours and THEN AND ONLY THEN EAT BREAKFAST.

We did the exercise first then ate. Today we do it backwards ever since they drummed it into our brain 40+ years ago we needed a healthy breakfast first thing to start our day. That was so totally wrong.

My Dad said two things: tomato juice and gelatin (Jell-O) for health. Instead they invented margarine that's only one molecule from being PLASTIC. We actually NEED BUTTER FOR GOOD HEALTH joint lubrication (synovial fluid) and the gelatine we need to rebuild joint cartilage.

I fear for your friend because rejecting water is a sign he is living in a restricted wind down condition, minimizing bodily functions. Get some real food into him and some good water if you can. Throw any margarine in a garbage can. Take in what your body needs to rebuild.

You can turn your body into a disease-killing juggernaut.

No sir, we drink purified drinking water that has been through the reverse osmosis process. We use plastic bottles, however they are refilled once a week, so I'm not sure if that much bisphenyl is leaking into them or not.

However, it's much better than what we're supposed to be satisfied with as tap water in the Southwest of U.S.A. I avoid our tap water like the plague.

In addition I have been "reborn" again since I discovered what a good juice extractor is. I juice all kinds of vegetables that I wouldn't have thought of eating before, and of course fruit. Who doesn't like fruit? My energy levels have surged. It's almost unbelievable.

You're on the right track then. I was replying toward his issue of not drinking water... and that it may likely lead to him needing kidney dialysis in the future. Sounds like you're doing great. Living cells from plants (fruits, vegetables) is what we need for our cells to be vibrant and keep living. Chlorophyll from plants is very similar to our blood, so I have read anyway.

I've recently combined a number of nutrients together into Dollar General Brand V-8 and yep, it has tremendously restored my energy. Last week I was so low on energy I started writing a Will. I thought my days were numbered. I deal with an issue called Myasthenia Gravis and this drink I put together bounced me off the ceiling. I feel so good the bottoms of my feet are humming when I stand up.

Your friend likely listens to other people than you for his water consumption advisor. Many doctors tell their patients to only drink water when they feel they need some so he is doing what we all do => choose to listen to the person whose answer we want to be true.

Oh he's a stubborn weirdo. I don't even let it phase me anymore. He's "old school" and he's going to do what he wants to do, even to the tune of touting the new low-fat status of pork products. :\

He watches too much television and has obviously been affected by advertising, as we all have.

But it just proves to me that when it comes to nutrition, many people choose to be ignorant, because they wouldn't be able to abide by the truth anyway, so why be informed about nutrition?

When he sees me drinking the drinks I make with my juice extractor he always cringes as if it's some non- palatable concoction. If he only knew. The drinks I make are delicious!

Yep. And yet sometimes purposely drinking something that does taste bad toughens us up too. But like I said in the first post, when we stop sweating due to constantly having our surrounding temperature always where we want it we begin reducing our thirst.

We have built ourselves a one-speed heart and body. What we need is occasional extremes. Work then rest, work then rest, sweat then don't sweat, the Push-Pull of the universe that keeps us healthy. Sometimes we need to force ourself to watch a TV show we don't like or better yet, right in the middle of our most favorite show walk over to the TV and turn it off.

That's right. I sweat extremely little and I have lived a very unhealthy existence. I inherited a thyroid chemically right for the maternal side of the family. Instead of holding me a decent body temperature the hormones poisoned me. I have been in various levels of hypothermia many times near death.

It has been a tough row to hoe but, I had to figure things out so I can help many people understand how important it is to put their body through the paces or they'll find out one day all their body can do is sit on a couch. Thanks for your comment and I'm very glad you did not have a poor experience. However, with the nutrition products and drinks I make now I am making a very good comeback.

    • NOT MY SWEET TEA! *clings*

Ahem. Sorry. Got that out of my system.

I actually think this guy makes some good points, but at the same time, what about moderation? A doughnut or hamburger (especially a non-fast food burger) once in a while is not the worst thing ever. Telling people they have to completely eliminate all the foods they eat is only going to scare them off of healthy eating; why not talk about moderation and portion size and physical activity?

It may not be as catchy, but that's how actual, sustainable changes is in health are going to happen. Unfortunately, that's now what people want to hear--we want catchy soundbites and programs to drop 30 lbs in a week.

    • with great power (this time on the basis of knowledge) comes great responsibility. if you want to change a system that is deeply rooted in an unhealthy culture you must begin with facts (not statistics but scientific evidence and examples) and inspiration. you have to appeal to human interest by showing how fast food and yes donuts have impacted everyday americans in a relatable way that is provocative and provides alternatives to making the changes that don't make the transition appear to be so intimidating. but if you strive to intimidate and villify everyone in the process, you're risking unfavorable results. i hope the guy doesn't get discouraged. i think that now would be a great time for activists to work on redefining how they market important information into an effective format that attracts constituents instead of vilifies them. they might find that a little bit of pragmatism gains a lot of support

    • Soylent Green came out originally as a plan to save the world from fat people eating doughnuts and having tapeworms. Since they were just employees it was okay to use the obese scum as examples to the rest. Besides, they found out when "for the children" was stamped on their plans it was quickly embraced anyway..

It was a good plan because the fat people couldn't run as fast as the thin people so the truck scoops always got fat people anyway. But once the fat people had all been scooped up the trucks began scooping up thin people. All this continued for about a decade but the death of all mankind happened anyway bercause they made one big miscalculation.

Thin people also have heart disease and cancer so the soylent green began to kill everybody caught in their own trap, a trap of hatred that returned and hit them in the neck, as all social boomerangs are wont to do.

In other words if this doctor can’t perform his job/ achieve his goals WITHOUT eliminating all the donuts, burgers and fries on the planet than he’s unfit for the job.

“doctors and nutritionists tell you sugar and fried food will kill you, but that's not good enough for you.”
      No, no, no.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

      An apple

      Contains

      Sugar.

yes, an apple contains sugar, but it's not white, refined sugar, like the donuts, etc.
a doctor's job should be to keep you healthy, a preventive maintenance program, not just tend to you when you're sick.
btw, that apple a day thing - minus pesticides - is really true.
the apple is about the perfect fruit. it goes with anything and won't give you indigestion if you eat it with other foods.
it keeps you regular, will give you some pep without the caffeine and helps with headaches.

Sweet jesus you don’t know what you’re talking about. First off apples do contain “white sugar” or as everyone else calls it sucrose. Moreover a lot of the time sucrose, whether natural or synthetically derived is bonded to fructose which is just another form of sugar.

“btw, that apple a day thing - minus pesticides - is really true.”

Oh god there’s that pseudo scientific, abstinence based bullshit again. First off if you buy your apples from a store then you can pretty much guarantee pesticides were used in their production. IT doesn’t matter if they’re organic. Organic foods are simply raised using ORGANIC chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides.

Secondly all the EPA, USDA, FDA guidelines for pesticide usage as so far below the threshold of safe consumption that you could easily ingest several times the regulatory guidelines and still, ultimately, be better off consuming that fruit or vegetable WITH the pesticides than if you didn’t eat it at all.

actually, there's a diff between WHITE REFINED sugar and sucrose. get a book and read it willya.
and not everything is grown using pesticides, organic or synthetic. the apples i grow are clean. they're not pretty like at your local big box grocery bin, but they're clean.
i will agree that you may be better off consuming that fruit or vegetable WITH the pesticides than if you didn’t eat it at all, but why do we have to make that choice? shouldn't all food be safe?
