Cicada-killer Wasps

Image

The cicada killer wasp is a beneficial wasp, non-aggressive and should not be confused with the still larger Japanese Giant Wasps (which are also known as Asian giant hornets.)

The cicada killer wasp females capture cicadas for their brood nest, thus helping orchards and vegetable farms. The sting is mild compared to other wasps, and only the female stings. The males do have a pointy barb on their abdomen, but they lack the true stinger of a wasp.
