SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!
Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!
Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.
The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners,
and had them place in dog shows.
The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.
The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.
I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh
vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand.
He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.
Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He's kind of a
'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.
TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO
HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF
AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona ) who created the ' Tent City Jail': He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.
He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but 'G' movies.
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.
Then He Started Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn't Get Sued For Discrimination.
He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order that Required Cable TV For Jails So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again . Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel.
When asked why the weather channel He Replied, So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna Be While They Are Working ON My Chain Gangs.
He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.
When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton....... If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back.'
More On The Arizona Sheriff:
With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix (116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), the Associated Press Reports: About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their
Government-Issued Pink Boxer Shorts.

I adamantly oppose police brutality, even the arrested are innocent until proven guilty. I also agree our judicial system is corrupt and definitely not just a majority of the time, but that doesn't mean our correctional facilities should be comfortable and relaxing. You don't "make it up" to people that are unjustly put in jail due to a defective judicial system, by making your correctional facilities a desirable place to be. Reward the real criminals so that the unjustly condemned won't have to suffer? That is a poor argument in my opinion.

His immigration stance alone is cringe-worthy enough. http://immigrationimpact.com/?s=arpaio
I will give the man kudos on the animal shelter bit, if it really is working out the way that is said.
But everything else is just overwhelmingly sickening.

Using the same yardstick that this sheriff is being measured by...the people of maricopa county would think that Bull Conners was presidential timber.
As the Public Safety Commissioner of Birmingham, Alabama, in the 1960s, Connor became a symbol of bigotry. He infamously fought against integration by using fire hoses and police attack dogs against protest marchers.
the dehumanizing tactics used against "law breakers" by these racists was condemned in the sixties and should be condemned now...it is unjustifiable to subject even a criminal to inhumane treatment...there are no exceptions. - 2 years ago

Joe is a fucking pig who deserves to serve time in his own hell hole.
He is an inhumane red neck. I am waiting for the day that he crosses the line and is caught and put in his own jail.
He is the quintessential ugly american.

This isn't justice - dehumanizing poor people for self-promotion is wrong. Our society produces crime, people are not born bad. Joe isn't supposed to decide people's punishment - he is not a judge or jury. This good ole boy system of thinking- with it's racist, hateful policies need to be a thing of the past. ;)
Forcing men to wear pink underwear is cruel and unusual - Joe has also been accused of VAST PRISONER ABUSE. No respect, bad article.

WOW.
I can not believe people actually agree with anything this crazy old turd does.
First, yes he keeps getting elected.
HOW, because the only folks who seem to vote in Maricopa are elderly citizens who are terrified Mexicans are gonna rob them or drug users are gonna get them in the night. He uses fear tactics and promises of low cost incarceration.
SAD TRUTH IS that his tent jail is full of non violent drug offenders.
Up to 75% in that facility are simple repeat drug possession offenders!!!!
So what if you can feed a pothead in jail for .90 cents a day JOE, or your jail only costs 100,000 dollars.
He still takes in the full 28,000 a year per inmate just like other Arizona jails.
So he gets the same amount of yearly income from each inmate as other institutions BUT he provides 10 fold less than others in the way of reform.
No offer of reform just sit you time out in the dessert heat.
No therapy or drug treatment, just sweat it out.
He is a CONSTANT civil liberties violator.
He wanted to place a police dragnet around the county via roadblock and search every car for drugs.
He had to be SLOWLY educated that this is UNCONSTITUTIONAL search and seizure. It gets up to 120 degrees in the desert and to save cash he puts folks out in the heat in tents wearing pink underwear.
I am all for locking up killers, rapists and pedophiles BUT I am not for wasting money to imprison every non-violent drug user you can find on the street.
His dragnet ordeal shows the truth of who he primarily incarcerates.
Oh did I mention he is on record making an almost racist rant about illegal aliens in Arizona.
This man is the WORST law enforcement officer in the country, he does not even know the law he enforces and relies on a team of tax payer funded attorneys to green light his insane endeavors.
Most every police officer nationwide has heard of this guy and most officers think he is a feeble old nutbag with to much power.
Jail does not need to be a 5 star resort but BASIC needs MUST be met.
Nutrition and health care MUST be available to ALL citizens in or out of jail.
No American can remain healthy on .90 cents a day, let alone while living in 120 degree climate.
Sally Struthers would have a hard time feeding starving Africans on that budget and they only get rice 3 times a week!!!!
Yet Joe claims he can do it.
What the heck are they eating that cost only 90 cents for 3 meals????
A freaking nasty old TV dinner is $1.00 and I would not allow my dog to eat that let alone a non-violent offender who is in a hell hole awaiting trial. This is a JAIL not a PRISON.
Those men have not been sentenced yet, jail is to wait out sentencing, prison is for the convicted.Therefor while they sit there in 120 degree weather in pink underwear, eating slop ,they are TO BE PRESUMED INNOCENT.
He makes officers look like heartless enforcers instead of compassionate protectors.
This is why people despise and fear police encounters even if they are Innocent.
This is the same reason officers have such a dangerous job today.
Thats my 2 cents.

While this is a much more productive use of the inmates time, I worry for the precedent that he is setting. It is essentially slave labor, and therefore has the potential for abuse. I don't want the state to make/save money by me being in prison.

Sounds like he is applying some techniques to running the jail system. Growing food, helping animals, no extra privileges etc, makes sense to me.
The only part I'm not feeling is the reporting of suspicious illegal immigrants.
People have a right to try and make a better life for themselves. If you can even make it into this country, survive, not commit felonies and pay taxes then you should be able to live here without someone snitching on you. I understand he is trying to take the initiative and enforce the law to the letter obviously, but still it seems wrong to me to go out of your way to hate on someone else for trying to make a better life. - 2 years ago

I read about the sheriff years ago. Have to agree with no tv, Playboy etc. Don't see why someone who robs my home, where I worked to pay for the items taken, then allow the thief to watch tv, while I wait for the insurance check to pay for a new tv. Glad he took over the dog shelter, most shelters put the dogs down after a week or so, at least with the prisoners their life span has increased. Like they say if you can't do the time, don't do the crime. I am a strong supporter of the ACLU but not on this issue.
