Mexico Legalizes Drug Possession

Image
WakeUpPeople
Mexico enacted a controversial law on Thursday decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and other drugs while encouraging government-financed treatment for drug dependency free of charge.

The law sets out maximum “personal use” amounts for drugs, also including LSD and methamphetamine. People detained with those quantities will no longer face criminal prosecution; the law goes into effect on Friday.

Anyone caught with drug amounts under the personal-use limit will be encouraged to seek treatment, and for those caught a third time treatment is mandatory — although no penalties for noncompliance are specified.

Mexican authorities said the change only recognized the longstanding practice here of not prosecuting people caught with small amounts of drugs.

The maximum amount of marijuana considered to be for “personal use” under the new law is 5 grams — the equivalent of about four marijuana cigarettes. Other limits are half a gram of cocaine, 50 milligrams of heroin, 40 milligrams for methamphetamine and 0.015 milligrams of LSD.

    • Mexico seems to have finally figured out the true about the war on drugs. It just doesn't work. When this proves to be a big success I hope other countries will follow suit. Don't fight your own people, it's just not right.

I agree. Since the money squeeze is on and police forces take a lot of money, plus the prisons and guards, I think there's a good chance it's a snowball. Rush Limbaugh says the Gov is getting ready to seize everybody's 401k's... but that was before Mexico made its move. Maybe 401k's are off the table, better fish to fry.

Actually hunzedog I have lived with serious Sleep Apnea since my chest was crushed in 1989. Had I not had the insight to develop self-hyperbaric breathing techniques.... I have had a number of times where my heart muscle became seriously low of oxygen. Couple weeks ago pain striping down both arms.

You go ahead making any jokes you want while I go on defying the doctor's medical manuals that say I am supposed to be dead. hahahaha Thanks for the good laugh though. Humorous laughter is good for the heart.

    • Most of you write as if you've never been personally affected by drugs. Maybe you should watch Addiction sometime - is that what you want to happen to your friends, family and neighbors? Marijuana legalization would bring many benefits to the economy, health community and a mind altering substance with a very low addiction rate. Narcotics on the other hand have very high addiction rates which are destructive to individual health and quality of life, local economies and communities. Legalizing narcotics would increase the destruction. Addiction should be covered by medical insurance at the cost of higher premiums to the individual just like smokers.

    • who cares the government is corrupt anyway, the police are crooked and its practically lawless. this will have no effect whatsover unless the government starts drug dealing too and put some of these drug dealers out of business

I'm sure the people of Mexico care.
Just because it doesn't involve you personally doesn't mean it's of any less importance.

And yes, until the government start legalizing and regulating drugs, cartels will continue to be a problem. So will immigration to America, unemployment, and wealth distribution. Free the weed and create a new farming industry for Mexicans.

so the rest of us are criminals because your brother made some bad choices? that doesn't make sense... what about those of us whe are responsible and productive and still do these drugs? I could say that i'm quite a success because these drugs make me creative... don't let one dumbass ruin something for the rest of us. also, you prove nothing other than the fact that drug use is a medical issue not a legal one.

that would be like saying that some people get high off paint and hurt themselves, so lets make paint illegal and to have it make you a criminal. this is not the way to solve the problem, it's only a way to make more criminals.

So dariusvons, whatever you create is You + Drugs eh? If you want to get even more creative try nutrition, try a product called Oxy-Nectar. It will raise your IQ permanently. Save yourself some money. Plus you reduce the risk of damaging yourself taking some bad stuff.

To soshelby: Your brother's damage might could be repaired using the same product. Write me a mail in 2-3 weeks. I'm planning to release a formula that adds Oxy-Nectar to V-8 Juice that does quite extensive brain repair. I may have it on a website by then. Til then, add some olive oil, coconut oil and wheat germ oil. It's a bit more to it than that but I'm looking at marketing it so I have to hold back some.

Your brother can do quite a lot of repair with that much. I have myself repaired some damage caused by a fall back in 1986, took only a few drinks to do it too. Stay in touch.

Info here will also help his recovery => http://tinyurl.com/6k2wkd

    • Very smart move going the way of Portugal. Instead of spending billion in a drug war, spending hundreds of millions on treatment is a better option.

    • a little step forward. if it changes anything in the country, or reduces any kind of problems, the U.S. should take some notes.

interesting that it's not just marijuana, we all know that our country would never decriminalize everything!

still, pot decriminalization is at least what we need.
but it won't eliminate the cartels unfortunately :/

    • Only take approved drugs from approved points of legal dispensation. And a real good idea is not to take them either! They lower Immune System function by reducing oxygen (because the immune system battles with them, burning up oxygen at a much-increased rate). Diseases take down more people who have low oxygen.

Just say No the best argument for great health. Hold the line against Mexican evil!

What are 12? Good greif you sound like an imecile reading of a telepropter. You dont work for Faux News do you? Try not to comment on things of which you have no facts or experience to hold up your baseless and base accusations. For someone so concerned about oxygen very little of it seems to reach your brain.

Dude youre living in a fantasy land. theres much more to these cartels than just drugs. if we legalized drugs and regulated them like you said , they would only increase their other operations such as extortion, kidnapping, and robbery to get their way. ever heard of the law of unintended consequences.

I guess you don't break for words too much.

I said "practically", because drug cartels make the most money from... *gasp*.... drugs!

This isn't legalizing the drugs but is essentially allowing for personal possession, so don't worry. The drug cartels will still be making loads of money, the mexican people will not be able to farm Marijuana for personal profit, and the corrupt police and militia will still be able to skim off the top of the profits in exchange for looking the other way.

The status quo will be upheld, and otherwise law-abiding Americans will possibly fund violent cartels to get illegal marijuana, cocaine, and many more illicit substances.

Perhaps if it was, I don't know, legal and regulated by the state and federal government officials then maybe the cartels will feel the pinch and that American money can get recirculated in the country instead of funding illegal criminals and actions in other countries.

But there are people in the USA making sooooooo much money off the war on drugs. Some Ex general, is running lots of privatized stuff for the gov. and they are making money.
America cares about those making money first, the rest of the people are expendable.

Sir, you should really do some research before you post comments like that.. Its a good thing all the way around and had everything to do with public safty and that should be more important than the shocking nature of the sititution at hand. I understand its a hard pill to swallow and yes its a bit strange but trust me its for the good of mankind and for all and we should always try and do what is good for all and not for one. We should never get our personal feelings involved.

Again do some research and its better to do away with the drug war because not only is it not working and costly its a war and people die because of it.
