This might seem like little more than a tantalizing mystery for entomologists, except for one fact: honeybees provide $15 billion worth of value to U.S. farmers, pollinating crops that range from apples to avocados to almonds. Any number of possible causes for CCD have been put forward, from bee viruses to parasites to environmental triggers like pesticides or even cell-phone transmissions. Despite the Department of Agriculture's allotment of $20 million a year for the next five years to study CCD, it's still a mystery — and the bees keep dying. (Read "Why We Should Care About Dying Bees.")
A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) shows that the causes of CCD may be more varied than scientists expect. The bees may be dying not from a single toxin or disease but rather from an assault directed by a collection of pathogens. A research team led by entomologist May Berenbaum at the University of Illinois compared the whole genome of honeybees that came from hives that had suffered from CCD with hives that were healthy. The sick bees exhibited genetic damage that could account for the die-off, and that damage indicated that they might be afflicted with multiple viruses simultaneously. This could weaken them enough to trigger CCD. "It's like a perfect storm," says Berenbaum.

Any organism that gets attacked by multiple viruses says to me that it's immune system has been compromised. It could be genetic, environmental or a combination of the two.
Regardless, based on the fossil record, honeybees have been around for 14,000,000 years. Their sudden decline during the age of insecticides, environmental pollution, genetic farming and global warming is strong evidence than it's more than mere chance.

nah,..'perfect storms' are more riveting. but of those 14,000,000yrs, the last 100 alone have introduced so many forms of circumvention, they well.. kills bees. scientists will ignore any obvious triggers to load up on investigative funding.

FOOD INC. watch it, current needs to highlight the food crisis. go on the 100 mile diet and buy lots of honey to save the bees.

so how is that G.M.O. food tasteing ? maybe some more chemacals will make it taste better. I know lets start nukeing all the food that way we know it is safe. as the world dies. well not so much the world just the humans thats all. the earth will survive no matter what we do to it. We are the ones that are going to suffer for what we do to it so lets all plant a garden an quite killing every thing that anoys us.

Three words:
Genetically Modified Organisms.
No, add two more to that;
Round Up
Don't know how much beating the head on the wall it will take to make people understand that messing with natural processes like our food/agriculture are starting to have an adverse effect on biodiversity and our ecosystems. Let's face it, even Current won't cover this on TV.

Regardless of Socrates demise, if we don't have the bees for cross pollination then the food supply as we know it will diminish a whole friggin lot.

Ya the bees in my back yard here in the Valley all act funny now. They only come out at night and keep flying into walls and doors. Then they fall down, walk around for a bit then die.
