    • This is a menace that threatens to reinforce the worst aspects of our democracy; keeping people locked in a cycle of crime and punishment for profit.

It's understood as modern day slavery, very sophisticated accepted by society through enforcement of laws that serve as pillars for the economy, thus nation.
Vision a prison full to capacity, take the wall out so you can visualize from the outside the prison filled without the wall, now think back to documents of slave ships.
Understand, that slave ships were on water transporting captured slaves for hard labor via sea, prisoners receive transfers on land from prison to prison, nowadays to out of state prisons into privatized prisons.
Think wages, a mere 25 cent if that an hour for corporations making billions, imagine prisoners not feeling like working one day and being sanctioned with a misbehavior report that if found guilty of refusing to work will receive a surcharge of upto five dollars.
It doesn't make sense only for the greedy profiteers.
