"We want to reach English speakers across the globe with a Bible that is accurate, accessible and that speaks to its readers in a language they can understand," said Keith Danby, global president and CEO of Biblica, a Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Christian ministry that holds the NIV copyright.
But past attempts to remake the NIV for contemporary audiences in different editions have been plagued by controversies about gender language that have pitted theological conservatives against each other.
The changes did not make all men "people" or remove male references to God, but instead involved dropping gender-specific terms when translators judged that the original text didn't intend it. So in some verses, references to "sons of God" became "children of God," for example.
Supporters say gender-inclusive changes are more accurate and make the Bible more accessible, but critics contend they twist meaning or smack of political correctness.
Acknowledging past missteps, the NIV's overseers are promising that this time, the revision process will be more transparent and that they will actively promote what they describe as a long-held practice of inviting input from scholars and readers.
The NIV was first published in 1978 and more than 300 million NIV Bibles are in print worldwide; its publishers and distributors say the translation accounts for 30 percent of Bibles sold in North America.
The Committee on Bible Translation, an independent group of conservative scholars and translators formed in 1965 to create and revise the NIV, will oversee the new revision.
An effort earlier this decade to create a separate version of the NIV that used more gender-inclusive language in an attempt to reach a younger audience fell flat with groups that felt it crossed the line.
That edition, Today's New International Version, will cease publication once the new-look NIV is released, said Moe Girkins, president of Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Zondervan, its North American publisher.
"Whatever its strengths, the TNIV has become an emblem of division in the evangelical Christian world," Girkins said.
It was the TNIV that ushered in changes from "sons of God" to "children of God," or "brothers" to "brothers and sisters." In Genesis I, God created "human beings" in his own image instead of "man."
Many prominent pastors and scholars endorsed the changes. But critics said masculine terms in the original should not be tampered with. Some warned that changing singular gender references to plural ones alters what the Bible says about God's relationships with individuals...
I bet it will become a real page turner.

ISLAM IS THE ANSWER.
I know you haters will speak up against this, but this is the sole reason the Qur'an was revealed to mankind. For once in your life, please dont be obnoxious, or ignorant, just google the content. If you would like, please visit www.freequran.com
For 4000 years now, the words in the Qur'an have been unchanged by man. The words have remaned EXACTLY the same as they were revealed to us by the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during his time. Muslims are told told to believe in the Gospels, and the Old Testament. We also believe in the divinity of Jesus and Moses. Im sure more than 90% of you reading this had no clue. Its the ignorance in this world which creates so much hatred, when all the information you would ever need is just a quick google search and click away. Please, when understanding the Qur'an, especially online, please refrain from the anti-Islam websites which actually manipulate the words from the Qur'an and remove words from certain verses to make it sound more complicated and biased. Read the true Qur'an and be the judge for yourself. What gives this group (NIV) the right to change God's words. This is no big problem tho, because there are over 50 versions of the bible icluding the King James Version, the Modern Version, etc.. the list goes on and on. What gives these people the right to do this and to claim what is right and what is wrong. The Qur'an hasnt even changed one word, and is still considered the greatest book every given to mankind. Please, theres no need to be hypocritical if you have not done your own research on the matter, do yourself a favor and check it out, it will only take 20-30 mins of your time. Take care my brothers and sisters.

hey BK says Action, Jesus last name was not Christ, Christ is Greek word for Savior and all prophets were given the name Christ. Jesus said to build no temple in my honor but to honor the father just as the father said he was the one and only God and to have no other gods before me. If we truly believe in Jesus than we would follow his example of going to temple, keeping the holy days and remembering he was born a Jew and died a Jew..

Jason: There was a Jesus of Nazareth preaching at the time, one historian from Greece made a quick note of them, called them a small ragged group. That is the only mention of Jesus in any of the histories written during the time but during this time there is mention of at least five so called prophets named Jesus working the same circuit and doing the same magical tricks. The magical tricks were learned in Egypt. The bible tells us that JC spent a good amount of time there. A Messiah for the Jews has been expected since time began but they rejected this one as he did not come in as a liberator. Who knows what if fact and what is fiction, the best way is to read the ancients and see what they were talking about.

If I told you there was a guy named Leon 2000 years ago who was better than Jesus would you believe me? You need to start accepting the reality that Jesus is a lie and the bible is fiction. There is no such thing as heaven because men made the idea up. No one has been to heaven to observe it. So why are you convinced that it exists? You have been deceived.

It could of been any of the five Jesus's working the circuit at the time. But the historian stated Jesus of Nazarath and that is why I think its the one in the scriptures. As to the whole thing in general, it makes no sense when you consider if the group were so important where are the historical records accounting for JC actions. Even if you take the star that shined bright in sky on his birth, no recording and the ancients were most concerned with any changes in the sky and would of noted it. thinks like that make one believe the scriptures are stories made up to keep children in place as the Grimms did with fear.

one has to remember that not only are the meaning of todays words are changing but they been changing since the first day the first page of the bible was written down. you cannot make changes on anything written after the first one to be accurate, you have to use the first. just wish someone clarify did Noah take two of each animal as first written or 7 clean 2 dirty as next written. And where in the hell in the book did Jesus stop being a Jew and convert to Christianity?

@Ragan God does not evolve, he remains constant, and the parables and teachings do not come from those other cultures, they had their own gods and customs. They came from the Hebrews{Jews}, and after Christ they came from his followers from many different cultures, which He still is gaining today. The Hebrews and Cathloics have spent many years interpriting the old scrolls, to them misinterpreting them is like a crime. and science had only recomfirmed there had to be something more than evolution, Darwins theory had just about been accepted as inaccurate, by the majority of the cu

Are they going to call it a Darwinian Version? Did God evolve into something else that it needs revision? Over all of these thousands of years these fairy tales have evolved from Sumerian, Asyrian. Persian Greek, Egyptian and Roman religions to the final Constantine version. Of course the many ecumenical councils involving the humans of the Byzantine church have made removed any devine inspired word of God from the bible. If the Byzantine councils made the changes and definitions and determined how the Holy Trinity is to be taught to the people. This is not Gods interpretation, nor are these people divine. They are just plain ancient or primitive false idols. Also today with the use of Infra Red and ultra violet and gamma rays science can see to the edges of the universe. and they can see the Atoms as complete spheres or quantum universes within them selves. Nano technologies are opening up new vistas into the nano and femto world an there is not a single element of diivine intervention thus far. Now who are you to believe. With infra red the invisible becomes visible but no trace of a divine being out there or down there. Science has done their part now where it the religious proof of this divinity?

I Iove the fact that people that never picked up a Bible can tell you how it's changed... The Bible is the most historically accurate document known to man.. it dates back to the codex. To say that everything in it has been changed over the centuries to suit someones agenda is nothing short of ignorant. Why? Because you can always refer to the source documents. When they revise the NIV all they are changing is the vernacular.. the meaning is still the same. Look at a king james bible and it's use of old english, it's dated.
If you don't believe in anything (or just yourself) thats fine but at least have your facts straight before you trash someone else's faith.

Whats the need for 50 different versions then. Explain that, sometimes its not smashing someone elses faith, its asking in a proper debate as to why certain things like that can be allowed. Who is this CEO, why is there a coporation holding "copyrights". What makes you chose the NIV over the King James over the Drake. If there werent fundamental differences, whats the point of different chuches offering different versions. You're response lacks factual evidence. Show me how acurate it is, why because the Vatican said so? Check out the new Penn and Teller Bullshit and you'll see. Mention one word of how the Qur'an has not been changed since it was revealed and you'll respond with terrorist this and that.
One more thing sir, if Jesus refered to God and seperated himself from God, even saying in most versus as to him not being God, why is he depicted as God. It just doesnt make sense, how can God die and feel pain and suffer. I do not agree with that.

The King James version itself is a greatly revised edition. So even if you accept the Bible as a holy book, it goes without saying that any version most people have ever read is not the original text, either in language or meaning.
However, the problem is that any specific (political / religious) flavor that 'interpreters' happen to believe at the specific series of 'translations,' would be their specific preferred text. And they would want us to believe it was guided by the hand of god.

My dear ProjectBat , complete unity is not usually a sign of a free thinking people . Robots create unity , we are evolving humans . Even as an individual grows older , they change opinions . I think it is good to be generous enough to allow others their opinion . As long as we can observe the golden rule , that is as much unity as is required for discourse . We are just exercising our god given brains . If some feel compelled to act , lets hope they have thought it through enough to come to a reasonable conclusion . Why else do we have brains ?

Actually , star wars mythology was created in large part from the perennial philosophies . That means it is transcendent of religion . Most of what people think of as religion , are a set of very fixed ideas . Philosophy is more broad . For example , " Life is an ever burning fire , feed that fire ! " It is notable that there is no explanation of how , to do so . This is left to the individual . Many people prefer to self structure , others do not . I am writing a book for my son connected with this . Just a single copy , of course . In it I will leave room for him to add insights of his own , and to revise it when he wishes . The important part , is , is it working ? Perhaps they should think about that when they do a re write . Do they like the results so far ? I am quite sure Constantine and Charlemagne had these thoughts in mind at one point . Life is change , that which no longer changes is dead . That is why the Constitution is considered a " living " document . What I would like to see is an end to a top down edit of the bible . Make it like wikepedia and let all christians partake . Let religion stop being defined by the few . It has been used as a power structure for too long . Give it back to those who it came from , the good , kind ones , who wanted to create hope for the masses . That I would like to see .

So anyone wanting to 'dig deeper' can.
Plus the King James Version puts its added words in italics so the reader can see which words were added and when you read the context you can see why the translator added them (usually to make the understanding clearer from the Aramaic/Greek language to English).

They are not changing the words of the Bible in revising the NIV because the words of the Bible were not originally in English. The words are pretty much set in documents written in foreign languages (unless newer manuscripts are discovered like the Dead Sea Scrolls were). The translators and historians are still learning more about how to translate these old languages into modern words that will give readers of the Bible a more clear idea as to what was being said in the time it was written.
You are right about the 10% thing though. While 10% was the standard at one time, the Old Testament mostly, the New Testament seemed to go in more of a "give what you feel you should give" direction.
Anyway, I am a Christian and I do serve at a church as youth minister. Rich ministers who spend their money on themselves do piss me off and I don't blame you for being angry.
edit: By the way, I am not sticking up for this particular Bible revision, but for the process of translation itself. I am a student of Hebrew and Greek and from my experience the NIV is not really the best translation out there. I just hope this one improves.
