Heather Lawerance, a 16 year old JROTC student at Springstead High school in Spring Hill Florida has been suspended for 3 days after walking into a classroom confronting a Muslim student and telling her to "Take that thing off your head and act like your proud to be an American"
Lawerance claims the Muslim student in question wasn't standing up for the pledge, but later reports confirmed that she was indeed standing but not reciting the words.
"This girl lied," Principal Duval said. "I have confirmed with the homeroom teacher the young lady stood for the pledge."
"You know, I made a not-so-kind remark, and I do sincerely apologize for referring to the thing on her head because that had nothing to do with it." Lawrence said in a later interview "But I told her, why don't she act like she's proud to be an American."
"It wasn't meant to be a racial comment, and I wasn't trying to bash her religion," she said. "I didn't expect her to say (the pledge). I just expect her to stand up for it. If she had a problem with what I said, I'd be happy to apologize to her."
After the incident when a school official asked her why she confronted her . "She began to rant that she was enlisting and was going to Iraq and that basically because the girl looks Middle Eastern, that makes her an enemy because all Iraqis are Middle Eastern," according to the referral signed by assistant principal Stephen Crognale.
Lawerance has been suspended for violating the district's policy against bullying and harassment. How about for being a bigot? or can they not suspend for that?
