Captain’s Comments
Would you like to be a partner in Community Policing in the Central District? Send me an e-mail with your information and interest in being a part of the Central Citizen’s Policing Advisory Board. Send me your name, address, phone number, e-mail and whether you are a resident, business owner and any related experience and skill.
Events- September brings more events, many in Chinatown with the coming of the Autumn Moon Festival September 19 & 20, and the SF Italian Athletic Club Festival also on September 19. September in the City will have many events that will affect traffic and staffing levels.
Interested in meeting our new Chief George Gascon? Interested in speaking to members of the SFPD Police Commission? On Wednesday September 2nd, 2009 at 6 PM you will have your chance to do both. The Police Commission will convene their meeting in the Central District at the Gordon J. Lau School at 950 Clay at Stockton Street. I will give an overview of the district including crime stats and some of our crime fighting strategies. My presentation will be brief to give anyone time for public comment. There is limited parking, so please take public transit if possible.

Bay Bridge 2009 Labor Day Weekend Closure Reminder
As previously reported, the Bay Bridge will be closed over the Labor Day Weekend starting at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3rd to 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8th. You may visit www.BayBridgeInfo.org for important closure details.

Text a Tip- Community Policing is successful only when the community is actively involved and engaged in crime prevention in their neighborhoods. Calls to police may be made in a variety of ways, some anonymously. You can call to report a crime, or even text through a mobile phone at: Text: 847411, call: 575-4444 or at Central’s tip line: 392-2623.

Pickpockets have been active along Muni lines in the district and have been especially active on lines in Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf. Remember some of our crime prevention tips: Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t be afraid to turn around and look at people who may be ‘bumping into you’ or pressing against you. Keep wallets in front pants pockets. Keep purses, backpacks and packages on your lap or held in front of you. Take off earphones while travelling in close quarters in crowds. A rubber band or two around your wallet keeps pickpockets from easily slipping it from your pocket.

‘Trauma’ Filming for the television series will continue in the district with helicopters, cops, firemen and other actors with guns, hoses and pyrotechnics. Do not be alarmed and look for the cameras and other equipment before calling 911.

The monthly Police Community Meeting is held the third Thursday of each month at the Tel-Hi Community Room at 660 Lombard at 6 PM. The meeting generally runs 1-1.5 hours. Have your say in the community.

      Crimes of Note:
8/21/09 11:40 PM Pier 7 Aggravated Assault with a Knife
Two ‘friends’ were arguing in play that soon escalated in one stabbing the other with a knife. Officers John Murphy and Ryan Jones arrived on-scene, called for emergency aid and took the aggressor into custody.

8/24/09 3 PM 800 block of Post Street Mental Health Detention
Mental Health Crisis workers were threatened by a resident and had the door slammed on them. Sgt. Carl T responded and after minimal contact with the suspect, called a critical incident, asking for a command post and officers to assist. After prolonged negotiations by phone, the man inexplicably hung up and ran into the hallway where he was subdued by SWAT officers on scene.

8/27/09 3 PM 1000 block of Francisco Robbery with Gun
A visitor from London was sitting on some steps when he was approached by a suspect brandishing a handgun and demanding his wallet. The suspect was described as a 25 year old black male, 6’2” 160 dark blue athletic suit, with a silver hand gun.

      8/27/09 10:30 PM Stockton/Sacramento Robbery w/ Gun
A woman walking in the Stockton was approached by 3 suspects, one of whom produced a handgun and robbed her of her laptop, handbag, contents and cell phone. The suspects were described as black males, 22-35 years old, one wearing a large red hooded sweatshirt armed with a small handgun, and two others with limited descriptions.

8/28/09 1PM 200 block of Jefferson Sex Offender
Officer Severo Flores responded to the Wharf on a call of an aggressive panhandler who refused to discontinue the practice. Further investigation indicated the man to be an unregistered sex offender, sitting outside a toy store. The man was booked for the offense.

8/30/09 at 3:15 AM 1100 block of Clay Aggravated Assault/ Vandalism
A man was sitting in his friend’s car in front of his building when a suspect took a brick and struck the car, attempting to smash the window. The victim attempted to open the door as the suspect continued to strike the car and assaulted the victim as well. Officers arrived to see the suspect being pinned to the street by the victim. The suspect was booked for felony assault and vandalism.

8/31/09 9:52 PM 400 block of Bay Street Stolen Vehicle
Officers Matt Sullivan and McMilton responded to a call of a stolen vehicle at the gas station with two suspects aboard. The officers spotted the vehicle and detained the suspects who admitted to stealing the car earlier that evening from Windsor, Ca.

Auto Burglary is a commonly committed non-violent crime in the district. Auto boosting is done most often by individuals grazing an area, walking along rows of parked cars in garages or on the street with an eye out for exposed, valuable property. The act of breaking the window and grabbing the property takes literally less than one minute to complete. Most property is taken and turned around for sale on the street or through other means such as on the Internet. I encourage you to take some precautionary measures to keep from being an auto burglary victim:
Always park in a well lit or well travelled spot.
Take all valuables with you or lock them out of sight in the trunk. If you know ahead of time that you will be stopping, put the items in the trunk before arriving at your destination. Some crooks have been known to watch for the transfer to the trunk when selecting targets.
Remove all charging cords and cradles from view. (For Ipods, cell phones, GPS, etc.)
Do not leave change, cds or sunglasses in view if possible.
Use an alarm system, steering wheel locking device and use locks on all external accessories such as bicycles, skis, roof racks etc.
