Are US tax-payers funding the Taliban?

Image
btucker
U.S. officials confirmed that this fall Congress will investigate allegations that The United States Agency for International Development funds for road and bridge construction in Afghanistan are ending up in the hands of the Taliban, through a protection racket for contractors.

The hearings were sparked by this GlobalPost special report on the funding of the Taliban.

We need to stand up for peace real peace. Tell them this is not what we voted fore. Bring our troops home and stop making a few people rich while destroying the poor.

    • There are no radical claims about government secrecy or our secret government. Perhaps you should go to You Tube or PBS and search for Bill Moyers video of "The Secret government".

    • We created the Taliban indirectly through taxation, why wouldn't we still be funding them? We were funding them when they got started too!

Blame Reagan for that, and blame all the other people responsible for creating them and letting them thrive. Presidents included.

    • what is up withe every1...y dont people understand that shit like this has been goin on for decades now...its just now surfacing...so the ultimate fault lies in the hands of the AMERICAN PEOPLE...its your own fault if you dont keep track of where your money goes...stop blaming shit on the government all the time and look in the mirror and ask yourself , 'HOW LONG WILL I LET THIS HAPPEN'...understand the body of power that is currently in the government system now is growing older and older and they all look alike and their skeletons are currently showing...in the end the truth will surface...

    • It is not a conspiracy. It is a logistical reality. The US and NATO cannot move supplies through Talibanland without either taking them on or bribing them.

    • I'm sure the U.S. dollar, spent by citizens or government, funds many things around the world. We have a huge government system, so why wouldn't some branch be corrupt to some level. Every country has some office that's connected to a non-desirable group, whether that's their intent or not.

Also, I would like to think that there are too many contingencies within foreign relations to judge these things with such a basic description.

The chances that George W. Bush and his "dickhead" advisors have planned some worldwide conspiracy with the CIA, like Lex Luther, are pretty damn slim...

    • Another not surprising move by the American Government, Lets not forget our tax money funding for the Secret War against Iran. America should just stop meddling with other countries affairs unless they are asked for help. Most of the time they don't want the help because America always has a plan for the interest of America and not of interest of the people. Maybe they could get out of debt or help its' own people. Lack of education, affordable housing, health care, and improving its' people's concerns, rather than the worlds concerns. Maybe just maybe so much people around the world would not have so much hate against America.

Typical AMERICA PROBABLY HELPS MORE COUNTRIES THAN MOST SO LETS PLEASE JUST GET OVER THIS! Our leaders in the past have made mistakes, but lets turn things around, make your voice heard, NON-VIOLENTLY and IN AN INTELLIGENT MANNER, otherwise we'll look just as ridiculous as those fools on FOX spreading ridiculous rumors, and freaking the whole nation out, havent you seen what one tiny governor from alaska can do to this country?!?!?! haha

    • We did fund the Taliban and arm them, remember Reagan did that to counter the Soviet invasion. Even trained them. Food to the needy is never aid to the enemy, they steal it from their own people, its been done over and over in Africa. Do we stop helping? This not a new event , it has happened in every country we have sent supplies in. Maybe if we had of used our troops to wipe the Taliban off the face of the earth instead of sending them to the illegal war in Iraq, we would not have this problem today. But George wanted to show his dad his dick was bigger and he got the badman. And with all that oil but Georgie and Cheney could not look the other way. But don't worry Cheney wants to be president and maybe he will make the mooseburger his VP, that way we can have all the wars we want and take what we want. You bettcha

    • This just goes to show you how important American troop lives are overseas. If the Taliban are living ofrf of American supplies, just why in hell is the USA going to wait till fall to investigate? This sounds again like a scam. Is the CIA involved in this? This proves that government, (which is composed of a select few incompetent people) as a whole is void of feeling, compassion and awareness that there are millions of citizens who are depending and expecting government to serve them. Government is supposed to be servants of the people not a special elite body of Americans who live on a higher plateau over and above the law of the land and the citizenry of this land. Why wait till fall, lets investigate now and arrest if criminal intent is found. Its time for Government to place a value and price on human life. Its time for government to pay for screwups. Its time for government to face the people of this country. The government does not own the people the people own the government.

Really Jubal, this site isnt for people to be blaming one another, we should really try being the generation that can talk about things instead of blatantly blaming one another, thats how these personal feuds begin and rage into something super intense. Sure America has done alot of bad, but so has the rest of the world, you, a current viewer should know this of all people.

    • May be funding the Taliban? Judging by the current resident of the White House, I'd say it was an absolute certainty US taxpayers were funding terrorists.

    • Interesting, about there being a correlation between any difficulties with distribution of aid and local violence ; wonder if there were any 'shortcomings' prior to American elections or major military movements...hmn.

      Yup.....

Look at Vietnam.... So we killed over 2 million and they only killed 55,000, they won (if there is a "winner" in mass deaths of men, women & children. You might try to justify it by calling it war but thats how 9/11 was justified by the "enemy" [whoever that was]).

      excerpt from article

"report on the funding of the Taliban last month that uncovered a process that has been an open secret in Afghanistan for years among those in international aid organizations."

Hey, JJammer. How many years has Obama been in office now?

How long was it that Timothy didn't pay his taxes? Then he paid them all and he got to have a top spot on the government. Length of time doesn't matter in government for tax payments and who should and shouldn't be hired and therefore it doesn't matter when it started...it's still going on and guess who is in office now allowing it to happen?

      Obama.

      Oops.

And by the way...I read the article and therefore saw that and still made my comment. Not taking it back.

You sure like to blame Obama for everybody else's mistakes.

    • J_Jammer:

Isn't that's what's suppose to happen? Everything that goes wrong and right under a President, no matter if they did it or not, gets blamed for it?

That's how it worked in the past. Why would Obama get to be treated any differently?

    • J_Jammer:

No. But if Obama sat in on the meeting where they discussed the funding of the Taliban with US tax dollars, and said nothing to stop it or even worse he encouraged it...

It is his responsibility to make the tough decisions and to put the right people in the right positions in his administration. If someone fails significantly like, oh say Michael Brown at the helm of FEMA during Katrina, then yes... you can blame the president for not managing his administration effectively. I don't think that it is accurate to blame Obama for something that has been overlooked for years under a different administration though.

    • J_Jammer:

True as that may be....people still blame, even Bush for Clinton's mistakes, the President of the now for the problems that might have been started before.

When you get a new house you should inspect it and find the problems and then show them so that the owner can deal with them before you take no full responsability. Presidency is more complicated but just the same. You're accepting what the other President did as your job now. No matter if it was secret or not you now are in the position of SHOULD know.

If this is accurate then maybe Obama should be paying attention to what job he has instead of making more work for himself like...I don't know talking to kids? Going to town hall meetings making health care more confusing...he is spreading himself so thin he's hardly doing anything right or giving anything his full attention. Even his speeches are starting to suck.

Fo real real, dont just blame the president, there are half a million people in the administration that make decisions as well, we just need people to start being intelligent and try bring certain discussions to the table, shit! we have online options to contact senators and congressmen, atleast you could contact your local government and make your voice heard instead of just complaining.

JJ You say "True as that may be....people still blame, even Bush for Clinton's mistakes, the President of the now for the problems that might have been started before." But if you go back one more president before Clinton you will see Bush was really the first one to fund the Taliban and thats a fact.

The question is what kind did he fund? The kind now is not the same as the kind then.

One could fund a revolution (French for America) doesn't mean that for the rest of their entire existence France agrees with America or that they should be blamed for funding them many, many moons ago.
