What should Obama's big health care speech say?

Image
afitzgerald
President Obama reportedly will call a joint session of Congress next week to give a big speech on health care. These sessions are rare, which underscores how important health care reform is to the President. Now while administration officials have not said much about what policy recommendations Obama will include in the speech, Talking Points Memo says that their sources say progressives should get ready to be disappointed.

What do you want Obama to say on health care reform? What do you think he should include or get rid of and how do you think he can inspire the bipartisanship he so badly wants (or can he at all)?

    • shanklinmike, thanks for the timely post! The American people needs to have a dose of reality of this part of the public and government. For God sake people, we are dealing with real people lives here. People are dying every day because of America's powerful groups lack of empathy for others. Please, It got to be better than that!
There are a lot issues involved here and those that are alert must take a stand for life in opposed to policies of death.

    • They can start, among other things, by making medical marijuana available to everyone, doctors available to everyone, and dentists available to everyone. No one should have to go to the ER for minor, non- emergency problems. Every man, woman, and child, no matter what age, should be able to see doctors without having to pay out the ass, give an arm and a leg, and get price-gauged. Medications absolutely should never ever be marketed for profit, but people should be able to get what they need, when they need it, and at reasonable prices. Companies that make dangerous drugs and market them for profit should be shut down (or at the very least, forced to make serious policy changes). Marijuana should be regulated and taxed just like tobacco and alcohol is. Alcohol could be taxed more. Fatty and sugary foods could be taxed more. Industrial hemp could be grown here and used for a multitude of things that may or may not be related to health reform. College tuition should be dramatically cut. Dramatically, hugely, massively cut down so that more young people can actually go to school to earn degrees and become medical professionals. We need more medical professionals, especially dentists. Everyone has the right to see a dentist and there are times in everyone's lives that a dentist is needed, sometimes immediately, not seven weeks later. I personally have needed a root canal for about 3 1/2 years and in all that time have never been able to afford the $1,600 cost. For one tooth. I don't suppose that kind of problem will just resolve itself, but alas, here I am.
I don't know if this makes sense, but do you think higher grade marijuana might be offered by prescription only while lower grades could be available for sale OTC behind the counter at the store, like cigarettes. Like joints in cigarette packs. Like Top tobacco. I don't see why not; they already have OTC (over-the-counter) ibuprofen right out on the shelf, and at the same time they have prescription ibuprofen, which is 600mg. I don't really see the difference between the two, besides dosages. I think that would be a good way to make pot available while still having something that can be used practically by sick people.
The problem with pot isn't the drug itself, it's the lack of self control, and self discipline by the american people. Remember, "set and setting". Regulation. Taxation. Doctor prescriptions. State and local laws. But most importantly, self respect and respect for your fellow man.

      I'm rambling.

AGREED! Self control dawg, we can see that ever so evident in the consumer driven soceity, we have the debt and obesity to show that we dont know modesty. And yes, I agree with your medicinal comment, it should be sold like in the netherlands, it should be tolerated, allowed a certain amount, there should be an age limit, and State government should make the decision, NOT Federal!

    • This is precisely why I supported Hillary Clinton ...

And if a public option is not sought by the Obama Administration, he will officially have become President Fredo.

    • Nothing he says would evoke any interest from me. I have more important things to do with my time than listen to one of his pompous speeches- like pick my nose, stick toothpicks under my fingernails, or scratch my ass and fart at the same time..........

WHAT US PRESIDENT WOULD HAVE DONE THAT?? DOESNT THAT SHOW SOME KIND OF DECENCY>? I think hes doing fine, and people like you are the ones making everyone scared! Please have some patience.. If you are that scared, then go to your local government and have something intelligent to say instead of uttering nonsensical bullshit all day!

    • He should ask everyone against Health Care to step down and feel responsible for all the deaths for the lack of insurance and health care.

USA is a third world country.

    • Well we already know he is a liar and can't be trusted, so does it really matter what he says? I just hope there is a ball game on that night. If I want to be lied to, I'll go down to the corner used car lot, they're more convincing down there anyway.

Really dude, dont be a downer, you sound like someone that has a few issues you should deal with in your life before you criticize the president personally, why dont you actually do something instead of complaining or being ridiculous like some Fox news correspondent, America has had way worse problems in the past. Please, just dont say ignorant things like that, noone will take you seriously.

    • How 'bout "we should rethink this whole thing and do it right.
      Not rush it through.
You still have a majority of Democrats to back you if you do a better job of really giving it the amount of research it needs to start n the right step to fixing the problem not throwing another mistake into the mess.
Come up with a real, workable plan and try it on a limited number of people, say a given area and get the general population of that group(s)' input before you move to something drastic and unrepairable as the 'fix'. Like the FDA does with drugs before market!
