At age 21, Matt Garcia was the youngest person elected to the Fairfield, Calif. city council. He was killed less than a year later, on Sept. 1, 2008, after being shot in the head in front of a friend's home in Fairfield. It was a tragic case of mistaken identity, where the suspected gunman thought he was shooting a drug dealer who owed him money.
For the one year anniversary of his death, my newspaper, the Daily Republic, has put together a video/multimedia presentation on his legacy and how death affected the community. Despite the short time he was in office, Garcia really strove to motivate young people in Fairfield to better themselves and the city. His family and supporters have organized and worked this past year to help carry on his message.
