First Lady requires more than twenty attendants

No, Michele Obama does not get paid to serve as the First Lady and she doesn’t perform any official duties. But this hasn’t deterred her from hiring an unprecedented number of staffers to cater to her every whim and to satisfy her every request in the midst of the Great Recession. Just think Mary Lincoln was taken to task for purchasing china for the White House during the Civil War. And Mamie Eisenhower had to shell out the salary for her personal secretary.

    • Full time make up artist? First first lady (not even Jackie) to have that!

      I am sure it is all necessary, but in such bad taste when so many are hurting in this country.

      It smacks of the holier than thou do as I say not as I do visions of the anointed.

      I am sure they are all great people doing important and necessary things, but it just has the wrong appearance.

    • Maybe this is their idea of going "green!" Or maybe creating more jobs from the blood sweat of the American people is a good idea in times of recession. Any economist will tell you that jobs creation is good for the economy. Their economy, not necessarily the people's economy.

    • this is "unprecedented" never happened before and the other First Ladies did do alot of public works. Remember HER speech during the campaign? Shame on her, I really want to respect this admin but how can I,pay and pay and pay. forget the stimuli pk.

    • Hillary Rodham Clinton had three, Jakie Kennedy had one, Laura Bush had one and prior to Miamie Eisenhower they paid for their own assistants. The list did not include hair and makeup but we are also paying for them. The Air Force one trip was when they decided to fly to New York City from DC for Dinner and a Show. They got flack for this trip and paid out of their own pocket.

    • Whew. That is quite a list with some pretty high salaries. Then again, I at last didn't see one fluff job like hairstylist. This list seems to equate with the unprecedented amount of media attention placed on the White House, and the number of events, etc. she has to attend and organize. I know she and Pres. Obama payed for White House renovations out of their own pockets, something they were not required or expected to do, and paid for Air Force One expenses for one trip, which no other President ever has.
