MANILA - Passengers leaped into the dark sea and parents dropped children into life rafts from a ferry carrying nearly 1,000 people after it capsized in the middle of the night in the Philippines.
At least nine people died and a search was underway yesterday for 33 others reported missing.
Navy ships were deployed and three military aircraft scoured the seas, rescuing more than 900 passengers and crew after the Superferry 9 turned on its side nine miles off Zamboanga del Norte Province.
The ferry's violent rotation roused sleeping passengers - many of whom jumped in the darkness into the ink-black water, coast guard chief Adm. Wilfredo Tamayo said.
Rescuers transferred 926 of 968 passengers and crewmen to two nearby commercial ships, a navy gunboat and a fishing boat.
The ferry had left the southern port city of General Santos on Saturday and was scheduled to arrive in Iloilo city in the central Philippines yesterday. There were no signs of terrorism.
