The USA is number one...In gun sales!

Despite a recession that knocked down global arms sales last year, the United States expanded its role as the world’s leading weapons supplier. According to a new Congressional study, the U.S. increased its share to more than two-thirds of all foreign weapons sales in 2008, a year in which global sales were at a three-year low

The United States signed weapons agreements valued at $37.8 billion in 2008, or 68.4 percent of all business in the global arms bazaar, up significantly from American sales of $25.4 billion the year before.

Italy was a distant second, with $3.7 billion in worldwide weapons sales in 2008, while Russia was third with $3.5 billion in arms sales last year — down considerably from the $10.8 billion in weapons deals signed by Moscow in 2007.

The growth in weapons sales by the United States last year was particularly noticeable against worldwide trends. The value of global arms sales in 2008 was $55.2 billion, a drop of 7.6 percent from 2007 and the lowest total for international weapons agreements since 2005.

The increase in American weapons sales around the world “was attributable not only to major new orders from clients in the Near East and in Asia, but also to the continuation of significant equipment and support services contracts with a broad-based number of U.S. clients globally,” according to the study, titled “Conventional Arms Transfers to Developing Nations.”

      "tyr", the "days of yore" refer to Jolly Olde England and Robin Hood, guns were not widely in use then! and the Nobles consigned weapons only to themselves, thus resigning the lower classes to enforced servitude! A condition most Americans are not willing to submit to.

      Unfortunately, you appear to be another ignorant anti-gun loon who has not read a single history book in their life. The Founding Fathers put that in there for a reason. There is no expiration date on the Amendment. If you want to change it, there is a process to do so. I suggest you lobby your Congressmen to propose an amendment. Good luck with that.

      Now, you may continue your anti-gun loon ways while making yourself to be the ignorant person we all know you are now.

      moon you seem to have misread history, Robin Hood and his band of merry men were experts with sword and bow...they went about relieving the rich of their ill gotten gains and "redistributed the wealth" among the poor.

      We who proclaim our RIGHTS to gun ownership are NOT Nazis, in name or deed, nor even as allegorical reference.

      To the contrary, we are more like the citizens who responded to the tyranny of those fascist regimes by forming armed resistance.

      YES, the resistance that is now seen as a nearly futile but heroic effort to undermine the fascists.

      And if you will allow me to continue the allegory, you who complain are like the collaborators, those in France who refused to fight the Germans and instead sold out their Jewish neighbors to the fascists, sent them by train to their extermination. Those who provided lists of "suspected resistors".

      We hope to be able to restore the constitution, not subvert it. We hope to ensure YOUR liberty as well as ours, not steal it from you. And we hope to do this peacefully, not through arms. But unlike some, we are willing to defend ourselves if necessary.

      So why does America need guns? Do you walk down the street in constant fear for your life? Is there a foreign invader occupying our home soil? No i sincerely doubt you do. So why do you need weapons?

      Oh thats right you need them out of FEAR. Fear of your fellow man and neighbors. Fear of the Federal government trying to take away your rights and property. Fear of some unnamed foreign adversary. Stop living in FEAR! Live your life without worrying about the what ifs. And for gods sake stop watching the 24 hour news stations. They ALL suck! Everything is sensationalized and played only if they think it will draw in viewers. And guess what? Fear and death SELLS!

      I have guns because it is my Constitutional right to own guns. Will I ever need to use the gun to protect myself from a tyrant or for self-defense? Probably not. But in case the need does arise, I will be prepared for the occasion.

      You prefer to be a victim. There is nothing wrong with that. That is your right as an American.

    • @ajil, gun sales are not up because Obama is black stop feeding the hate machine! the demos have had gun control on their agenda for many years, the same with partial birth abortions and stem cell research, and health care reforms, affirmative actions, and government run social services coming into homes, sex education and free condoms in public schools, capital punisment, and tax increases to pay for bigger brother. This is the democratic ticket agendas, this is it. not because of race.

      not sure where you live but the biggest city in my state, Milwaukee, the Mayor just went to the capital about gun control, and although the majority of the guns used in this cities crimes were not legal, the residents of Milwaukee have reached a tipping point from responsible gun ownership to "kill the mother------s for no reason at all" Its like a war zone, and a few weeks ago the mayor got "beat down" for helping a women with a baby. Not everyone should have a gun, not everyone see a gun as a responsibility, but a rise to power ie: violence, unjust killings,
      On the otherhand my community has the largest highschool trap shooting team in the area, our redneck boys and girls know how and when and why to tot a gun, and 10year olds now have their God given right to carry a rifle with mom and dad, and there hasnt been any murders as far back as I can remember.

      It seems you are not only ignorant in your playing of the race card, but also ignorant of the true intentions from the Obama administration.

      Obama had constantly spoke of his disdain for guns. Illinois has some of the worst anti-gun laws in the country. Rahm Emanuel and Eric Holder have both spoke of their disdain for guns. Another Illinois Congressman introduced a new Brady Bill this year.

      The Obama admin despises guns. They just can't find a proper way to go about banning them. Why do you think they kept lying about US guns making their way into Mexico? Why do you think he was talking about passing a bill to put serial numbers on all bullets? Why do you think Emanuel wanted to deny millions of innocent Americans the ability to own weapons?

      Not being informed on an issue is an excuse. Being ignorant is not.

      out of curiosity, why are SN on bullets a bad thing?

      I think it's wasteful, personally... as I imagine criminals (at least the good ones), would simply file SN's off or something. Thus rendering SN's just a process to increase cost of bullets. I'm curious to hear why SN's are a good thing or bad thing.

      Like you said, it is a way to increase the cost of bullets. The bill also stopped people from doing their own reloading.

      It could also be used as a way to track every single person who buys a box of ammo though. You buy a box of ammo with certain serial numbers and that goes into a database.

      hehe.. i dont think obama's race is the prime cause for the spike in arms sales in the US. the intent was to jab at the racist that have gone out because the black president wants to take their guns. I know of Obama's aim to disarm the world. He is also seeking to rid the world of nuclear weapons, yet i believe Obama to be wise enough to tackle these issues during his second term.

      Yep. All made in the USA. They are made by companies you've never even heard of! Many of the items come from sheltered workshops- blind or physically disabled. You won't find any "name brand" companies supplying the US military.

    • It took about 3 weeks to buy my Russian M44. I use it for target shooting. Not just the paperwork, also shipping time. I'm glad we have the opportunity- look at Australia- all their guns were confiscated and destroyed. Tyranny can never overcome an armed populace.

That's like trying to protect the right to bear spitwads, given the level of sophisticated weaponry we have handed over to our private military contractors.

      If you honestly cared about liberty, you would stop buying the load of drivel spewed out by the aggressive and conscienceless predators who have convinced you that America needs to be a fortress, instead of a nation. A true nation exists only because its people band together, shoulder to shoulder, to face challenges, not because cowards in denial use cheap firearms to give themselves a false sense of security.

      WHether or not you think I need an automatic rifle is irrelevant. It is my Constitutional right to own an automatic rifle and the Supreme Court agreed in DC v Heller.

      You are also delusional if you think all the military would side with a tyrannical government. You are also delusional if you think a well equipped unconventional force couldn't fight a much stronger military force. I guess we haven't seen this in Iraq or Afghanistan have we?

      I've got an M44 also. In fact, I use it for hunting. I was out shooting it just yesterday, to misquote a rap song: "I love the guns, the guns that go BOOM!"

      to progresshiv, in case you were responding to unclecharlies, the M44 is a bolt action rifle. NOT an "automatic rifle".

      Automatic rifles are illegal except for folks with a very specific license that is very difficult to come by.

      We do have a right to own guns for our own protection and I think it's rather amusing to hear liberals on the one hand say that no government can oppress an armed populace that is determined to gain its freedom (and cite Afghanistan, Viet Nam, etc), and yet turn around and claim that if the US populace were to rise up, they'd just be "vaporized".

      So which is it?

      I personally subscribe to the oft-quoted Patrick Henry who said:

      Point- The fools that led to murdering millions under the Nazis and Stalin were Stalin and the Nazis, not people who oppose the private ownership of automatic weapons.

      And when was the last time a we actually fought a war on our home soil(excluding the Japanese invasion of alaska in ww2)? I believe it would be the war of 1812. Honestly our military is strong enough that we dont need to have a well armed populace... that is unless you're one of the people who are afraid of our own military trying to take control.

      Fun' we are at war on our soil! It may be a more subtle war fought with propaganda combined with a dumbed down populace but the fact remains we in the USA have the largest prison population in the world, 70% of which is African American. We have a private prison industry whom trades their stock on wall street with profit based on how many prisoners are in prison? This is fed by another for profit company called the military industrial complex which includes police and groups such as Blackwater.
      The Constitution demands that our military never be used on USA land and that We The People keep a well regulated militia. It is our duty as Americans to own guns and make sure the government knows we will remove them by force if we feel our natural rights are being infringed.

      There is one fly in the ointment. As the Federal Gov't. learned at the onset of the Civil War. Not all military personnel will blindly accept orders to attack fellow Americans. Of course the Yankees can always import cannon fodder from other countries, as they did in the 1860's. There have been several loudmouth's posting comments about the military overwhelming any type of citizen revolt, I suggest that they remember what is the composition of our military forces and would they kill their fellow citizens on command? Not to mention the polarization of voters which could unseat the incumbent politicians that would have led the Nation to such an impasse.
