White House to fly Red Chinese flag

The administration of President Barack Obama, whose official blogger while Obama was a candidate came under attack for hanging a Communist Party flag in his Harvard apartment, apparently has given permission to raise the emblem of Communist China over the south lawn of the White House.

The plan, reported by several English-language Chinese media outlets, has raised concern among those who are working to guard the United States from outside influences that could be threats.

According to the Global Times English-language edition, the national flag of the communist People's Republic of China on Sept. 20 will be raised for the first time on the White House's south lawn – a secured area seldom available for public events – in recognition of the Chinese anniversary.

"The ceremony has gotten official approval," Xiao Shuigen, secretary of the Union of Chinese American Professional Organizations, told the Times.

It was always my dream to raise a Chinese flag in the center of Washington, D.C.," Chen Ronghua, chief of the U.S.-Fujian Association, told the newspaper. "This year, my motherland's 60th birthday, is the perfect time for it."

According to China Daily, Chinese associations in the United States applied to have a ceremony.

Such emblems were an issue during Obama's presidential campaign, when a Houston Fox TV affiliate captured images of a volunteer in an Obama campaign office working in front of a flag featuring the image of Che Guevara, the South American revolutionary who became Fidel Castro's executioner after the communist takeover in Cuba.

At that time, the Obama campaign issued a statement calling the flag "inappropriate" and noting that the office where it was displayed was funded by "volunteers" and was not the official campaign headquarters.

However, it was Sam Graham-Felsen, a journalist-on-leave from The Nation, who joined Obama for America in 2007 and worked as the official blogger. He, according to a 2003 article in the Harvard Crimson, adorned one corner of his shared student apartment with "a Communist Party flag ... bought on their trip to Russia the summer after sophomore year."

The proposed event at the White House was condemned on the forums page on Fox News commentator Sean Hannity's website.

"People could understand if there was a Chinese visitor at the White House and the Red flag was placed on the stage behind the speakers, but to hoist the commie pinko flag in 'honor' of the founding of the People's Republic of China is absurd," the forum participant said. "This only goes to prove the Obama administration is out-of-touch with the American people."

    • This president does not represent the American people, just like President Bush didn't represent the American people. We the people, need to start to give a damn, and stop the social fascist from taking over the American Government. Flying the chinese flag any where near the white house, let alone the White House, is the ultimate disrespect this administration can bring upon "We the people of the United States of America." Anyone who commits treason against the United States should be hung like a coon, in the name of Our County's Four Fathers.

    • The 3 confederate flags are American flags, so are the other 15 American flags. The confererate flags represents the 11 states that seceded, attempting to form a new nation. This history shows the importance of the flag, liking it or not it is important. So the Chinas red flag means something, and no country flies another countries flag at their Peoples House, Castle.

    • What kills me is that the people who may have a problem with this were the same people who lobbied to allow southern states to continue to fly the Confederate flag alongside that of the U.S.

      I smell hypocrisy.

    • These comments are hilarious, both the ones intended to be humorous/sarcastic and the hilariously misguided comments of concern.

Are we at war with China? No. Are they a friendly country? Not really. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't do what we can to improve the relationship between the countries despite our differences. Does China own the US now? Of course not, but it would be ignorant to say that they aren't an incredibly important global partner.

Should we turn a blind eye to the atrocities the Chinese government commits towards its people? Definitely not, but think, would you be more inclined to take advice from a partner or an enemy? I hope all the xenophobia that became commonplace during the Bush administration goes away sooner than later.

    • Okay so am I the only one who doesn't mind? As long as it's not on the roof who cares. No one would complain if it was the French flag for there Revolution or any other country you like so what's the big deal about flying the flag in the south lawn. The fact that you're now worried that there going to take over is crazy. And all the Dept you talk about is from Bush's war that you guys loved, remember you got to kill towel heads who never fucked with us.

    • First of all I'll believe it when a real news source publishes information about it. Second, you conservatives are very inconsistent. First Obama is a socialist, now he's a communist? You're all just fascists trying to promote your fascist agenda.

Seriously, right? This article is overtly biased and presents the opinions of anonymous forum posters as credible sources. I honestly thought it was an Onion article before I clicked through the link.

    • This presents a problem because that is a foreign flag that flies on the house of the leading representative of the people of the United States of America. It may normally just be seen as a regular sign of increased relations between the two countries, however when they currently have such a massive holding of debt and in fact can exert a lot of power over the United States, this move can easily be seen as a formal recognition of this humbled state we find ourselves. Moreover, the principles and guidelines of the Communist Republic found in China are very different from America's. It is the fundamental recognition that this might be considered ok or acceptable to the American political culture is an insult. They should definitely change this decision.
