Army SPC Greg Missman had ended his military service 11 years earlier, but signed back on in order to provide his young son Jack with health insurance coverage.
After only one month on the ground in Afghanistan, Missman's father Jim received the news that Greg's convoy had been ambushed, and Greg was killed in the attack.
CNN reports that a "Pentagon spokesman said there is no way to count how many soldiers have joined the armed services to get health care benefits. As for Greg Missman, his son will continue to receive military health insurance so this soldier's sacrifice will live on."
The following YouTube video is from a CNN news report originally aired Mon., Sept. 7, 2009:

Great article, David. I enjoyed your mention of all the domed buildings of DC that could host telescopes. If it were up to you, the tip of the Washington Memorial would be flattened to accomodate an observatory!

When he was a candidate, he was a Christian and an American citizen and against the war. Now, he is sending more U.S. soldiers to fight against the Afghanistan people and he is not saying that he is a Moslem and he is not saying he is a Christian because either way, he will be called a liar. he is also not showing us the key papers that wo7uld show the wrold where he was born and what his religion really is. I was just showing the ridiculous attitude the left had all the time we were in Iraq. every effing day they had some new thing to criticize about George Bush. i just want them to see how it sounds and feels when the same crap is said about Mr. Obama. Is Obama a war monger, out to kill people of color in the dark skinned areas of Asia?
Why must he have a war at all? Why is Obama so interested in showing off American power and violence in a peace loving innocent Moslem country like Afghanistan? What did the sweet, non violent Moslem people ever do to Mr. Obama?
Why, Mr. Obama, oh why so much war and violence??? Why hurt the Moslems who have done so much for America and how dearly they have protected our freedom?
Should we take care of our own healthcare problems and put Van Jones back in control of the 30 billion?
Oh Mr. Obama, do not fall for all the right wing rhetoric.
We want Van Jones back with the other wonderful, peace loving Chicago men. Americans arise and support the Obama war machine! These Afghan Moslems must not be in control of their own country;Where are the Chicago heroes like Emanuel and Axelrod and Ayers and Annenberg, when they are needed to fight those Moslem oppressors in Afghanistan? Kill those horrible terrorists Mr. Obama, in the name of Ala. Those terrorists are not white like the Saudis who should be bowed to and kissed.

This is why the fact that Obama has reconsidered the public option of healthcare has saddened me. People are losing their lives to protect their family and family interests. And why do we not have universal healthcare? A problem of money? Fiscal issues? Are we really trying to say money is worth more to America than the well being of our people? This man sacrificed himself for the opportunity to provide coverage for his family, if this had been given to him (vets should get full coverage anyway because of their bravery and time spent protecting American interests) maybe he still would be with his family. Anyway, my blessings to his family and anyone else who might be afflicted by similar circumstance.

There is plenty of opposition to the afghanistan war, just because it does not hit MSM does not mean it is happening. This is what I mean by grassroots levels.....
We are coming on the 8th anniversary of being in Afghanistan, there will be protests in DC. Of course it will be ignored and numbers will be estimated low just as the protests for the Iraq war anniversaries were......
No matter what news station it is CNN, FOX, MSNBC, they all have a similar agenda of promoting hedgemony. Divide and conquer.... Did you see how they literally flipped roles based on who was president??

See any protests from the left about ho9w horrible Obama's war is in Afghanistan?
I have heard not one yell.
Yet, Afghanistan provides 98% of the world's heroin. Yes, 98%.
Is Obama upset about that? Did he even say one bad word about where all the heroin comes from? No.
He is only having his war against Afghanistan for political purposes.
If his name would be "BUSH" the left would be using their favorite N.Y. Times and CNN and ABC and NBC and CBS to scream and yell and cry.
So, they are not really against war, they are against Republicans and the right and the Conservatives.
But war is fine. Fakers and liars.

When we start to realize our health care is in our hands, and how we care for ourselves through diet and exercise etc. the need for " medical care" vanishes. Be smart , live "right" and take care of your children, avoid the crap. that way no one will have to make a choice for you as is stated in this article. This young man died for his family so they would have good health care. That's not where it's at. It starts at home.

Get the point? I get your point on exercising and dieting, that's basic knowledge and it's a pipedream to think everyone will live a healthy lifestyle, but even the healthiest people in the world need medical treatment and exams throughout their life. To say we can solve this health care crisis just by eating better and exercising more is ridiculous.

Thing is that if people were responsible for themselves, insurance would primarily be used on just those extreme ailments rather than general practice.
Being uninsured for over 8 years taught me to take care of myself or else...... Too bad if I did have any of these problems the doctors themselves would neglect any preventative care as I do not have insurance. Still it only costs me $40 to see my general practice doctor while he charges the insurance companies $120......

I can guess how O'reilly, Beck and Hannity and the other paid hacks are going to spin this:
"He could have worked at Wal-Mart instead."
Of course, they won't pursue their own comment in depth since it essentially says you're a fool to join the armed forces. After all, Faux support the troops - you can tell because they wear flag pins.
Also, the "Why not work at Wal-Mart?" angle implies that we should all be slaves to the corporatocracy.
Anyway, heart goes out to this man's family. He could have joined Wal-Mart but clearly felt the armed service was the best option. Who knows what he might have chosen even with a public option for health care, but it would have been nice to have the choice.

He should have just become a congress man.....could have got himself far better health care than that crap they are proposing as well as better than the military.
But that would have taken too long and he would have been denied that anyway because he may not have won....just like we are denied that care because we are not good enough like those congressmen and women and President.
Pity us only wanting the scraps they've created into words via a "Bill" that isn't anything near what they have.
shame.
maybe they should post his picture so that people can see the price he paid for health care.
Because Pictures make people think, apparently...of how to make things better. As we can all see with billions upon billions of photos the world is so much better for it.
It sucks that he had to do this to help his family. It sucks that anyone would make this a political statement.

Liberal! Seriously, I could hardly disagree.
The health care infrastructure in America is critical and it must be fixed.
Ideology aside, it is incumbent on a free nation to recognize the basic right to health, food, air and clean water, as well as the obvious freedoms so documented in the Constitution.
That is a simple concept.
It is a moral imperative and essential in maintaining a competitive and strong nation that is capable of both making it's mark in the global and defending it's values in the world, such as they may or may not be at any given juncture.
Nations of the free world that have their act together in this regard are in a majority, and they in pretty good shape to both weather this depression and face the challenges of the future.
Until America faces this looming issue head-on and deals with it *appropriately*, she'll be the last to recover, if at all.
It's a fundamental structural underpinning of a succesful society.
I personally do not care who gets credit for it as long as it gets done. - 2 years ago

Your body knows how to heal itself, without being joined at the hip to doctors. Americans spend so much money paying for prescription drugs and cough syrup derived from poisonous tree sap they don't eat right, so they keep getting sick and having the cancers you mention.
Knowledge is the key. Cells only turn cancerous after they're abused, which damages cell mitochondria, so if you eat right you avoid the cell damage that causes cancer creation in the first place. But that also means quitting excess sugar and caffeine, because they short circuit the cell mitochondria.
50% of cancer happens to people who abuse themselves and another 40+% of cancer "victims" is people who are gross overweight, so if you eat right you can indeed never have cancer. And if you do anyway? Do what people have always done die. But die with dignity as a free man and free woman not groveling on your knees begging a doctor to give you a few minutes of their precious time if they can.
