What Happened to the Editor's Pick tags?

Image

I've noticed that the Editor's Pick designations have vanished, and yet it still appears fairly obvious that Current staff are giving priority to stories they want to see pushed to the front page. There was an outcry over the policy, which may be the reason Current is being less forthcoming with it. If they insist on continuing with their policy of story order manipulation (although I wish they wouldn't) they should at least remain transparent about it.

Would any Current staff please care to comment?

    • Sounds screwy in this age of IT.

Another question. Do editors have the ability to manipulate story ratings so that they're pushed down?

Why can't the voting system and editor bumps be made more transparent? For example, why not say how many up or down votes a given story has received, and how many points a vote receives in relation to how many points a story has received for views? Why not show the precise tally?

"Sounds screwy in this age of IT."

bugs and regressions are a way of life when it comes to releasing new features. this bug has been filed and it will be worked on for an upcoming release.

in all fairness, if an item is featured in one of our featured spots ("Current Stories" and the playlists on each homepage channel), it's pretty safe to say that it was an "Editor's Pick."

"Do editors have the ability to manipulate story ratings so that they're pushed down?"

to an extent, yes. this is typically done with regards to duplicate content, or in the off chance of a really bad source being used.

"Why can't the voting system and editor bumps be made more transparent?"

this is a result of evolving from a producer-centric site (where we found that vote tallies on content that someone created firsthand) resulted in added conflicts, abuse, and flame wars cropping up. we used to display a percentage of up/down votes, but this only led to further confusion and speculation. for example, someone would see a 50% vote down percentage on their content, and then attack all of the people posting comments (assuming that they had actually voted it down). in many cases, only one vote had been posted on the item, the only positive vote being that of the original poster.

we are considering tallies for the future, but for now we don't have plans to do so...yet.

we stopped using the tags because the message bar that used to appear when the tag was applied is no longer working (note: i've added this item to the "Editor's Picks" group, and tagged it -- the message does not appear).

we're working to get this fixed in a future release.

    • hi numinant -- we've explained this several times, and will continue to do so as needed. the blog post linked here describes how content is featured on current.com in detail. as we do not have a "picked for tv" function on the site right now (it's being re-worked and will return when fully baked), all featured content is hand picked by our online producer team and our homepage editors.

to get a better sense of what is featured and what isn't, please click through to the blog post to get a better sense of things. let me know if you have any questions.
