In the first report of a week long series on NPR, Louisa Lim tells the story of 21st century gold miners and the environmental destruction they are wreaking on their Mongolian landscape.
The miners call themselves ninjas because they think they look like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with their gold panning equipment slung over their backs. They are poor and don't have much other means of income as commodity prices for the goods produced by their herds have fallen, but this new industry takes an even harder toll on the pasture lands that other herders rely on. And as multinational mining companies move in and take over the best spots, it becomes even harder for these ninja miners to make a living on their meager finds.
