Congressman wants all 'czars' to testify

Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) on Wednesday called for President Obama's "czars," or appointed high-level advisers, to testify before Congress about their "authority and responsibilities" in the executive branch.

The president's "czars" have become a point of controversy among his opponents because they do not have to be confirmed by the Senate as cabinet-level officials do.

McHenry wrote to committee chairman Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) and ranking member Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) asking the appointed officials to testify.

    • I love Rachel Maddow. She's extremely clever and right on target. As punishment for their deceptions Republicans should be tied to a chair and made to watch her show.

    • Oh come on, you guys! You have to admit that it is cute to the point of being precious to see this little Republican sit up straight and call for "accountability" just like he was sitting at the "big kids' table."

Gathering together the tattered remnants of their Congressional presence, they can't seem to put together a proposal on the color of the Men's Congressional Restrooms, let alone alternative plans for healthcare reform, reform of the rules governing the financial industry, a jobs bill (or preferably SEVERAL competing jobs bills from which we could choose the best). But they can "call out the czars." Ha ha...sorry, but it really IS cute.

If this little R starts using words like "honesty" or "integrity" (perhaps he can ask a Democrat or an Independent what those words mean) I am going to bust a gut laughing...as I picture Colin Powell's disgraceful testimony to the United Nations...or Bush's declaration of victory from the deck of an aircraft carrier...or Cheney begging for a pardon for Scooter Libby...Hee Hee...Those Merry Little Pranksters!!!

    • "Czars were in the spotlight again after "green jobs" czar Van Jones' resigned this weekend. It was revealed that Jones made harsh comments about Republicans and signed a "truther" petition alleging that the government played a role in the 9/11 attacks".

O.K.--------taking a side; the republicants REALLY ARE becoming a cult,.....a "conspiracy cult" methinks.

I read it. I agree with your assessment of what a czar is but not all that you imply.

For the record, I support President Obama's right to have whatever adviser he wants. My point is that each administration comes in promising transparency and ethics and none deliver.

    • This is an another twisting of the truth by the Republicans. In this country the word czar is a short cut name for various department heads. Reagen and other Presidents have referred to certain department heads as Czars, like the head of the Department of Transportation might be called The Transportation Czar. The Republicans know this but they are trying to start another conspiracy scare. Of course conservative news hosts along with Rep. McHenery are leading this charge of the lie brigade. Here's some more examples of the Czars about to take over our country and give it to Russia: Nixon created the Energy Czar to reign over The Department of Energy. GW Bush named his Intelligence Czar which is The Director of National Intelligence. In 2001 the Aids Czar was named who runs The Office of Director of National Aids Policy. Here's anther good one : The current Border Czar is over the Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for International Affairs and Special Representative for Border Affairs, also created prior to the Obama Administration. See why the short cut to just simply Border Czar? I'll spare you the rest of the list but I think you get the idea. McHenery's call to have the Czars testify as to their duties is another senseless moronic Republican attempt to discredit Obama. When this endless string of deceit and lies going to stop God only knows.

Just as a very important note, Savage is a political commentator and entertainer. Just like Limbaugh, Hannity, Olbermann, Beck, Maddow, Stewart, etc.

Actually, a thing that I find sad now that I think of it is the seemingly small number of actual newscasters in this country compared to political commentators these days.
