Wilson apologizes: 'I let my emotions get the best of me'

Image
DeliaTheArtist
"GOP Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina issued a statement Wednesday night apologizing for his outburst during President Obama's speech to Congress:

'This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.'”

    • Rahm Emanuel, Obama's chief of staff used to send his political opponents a dead fish when they opposed him (an alleged tactic used by gangsters and terrorists to send messages) . I wonder if Wilson got one today.

    • Okay. For the record, I think Wilson was wrong. I am only saying that both sides do it. I would like to see both sides done in. It would take 6 years to vote them all out of office.

Here is a link to video of Bush being booed (live on TV) by the Dems. I will grant you it is not shouting liar as Wilson did. I am not comparing the two and saying which cruddy party is better. But this link and the others above demonstrate the kind of petty bs that the current two parties have devolved into. I know the link below is from a conservative site. It was just the first one that came up in the google search and its link works.

    • Visited samthesixth posted links and they dont compare. they were not done on the Hill, on national tv in front of the President, basically to his face. Can you imagine what would have happen if this was during the infant ages of our nation? Im thinking it would have played out like the Burr-Hamilton duel....look it up. And lets behonest here Bush lied, no WMD not even a rusty knife. And he is a loser for doing drugs and skating out of serving his country during time of war.

    • As expected, people rush in to defend Wilson. Look, it's politics, so emotions happen. But there is a difference between calling someone a liar in an interview, and yelling like a schoolboy at a joint session to hear a speech by the President. It is simply unacceptable behavior in that environment. Period. The man stood up and apologized, which I will give him credit for, but it only underlines the lack of civility and maturity for that matter since Obama has come into office. And we can cite how people attacked Bush, which happened, but the difference is that Bush was being attacked for the outcome of his policies. Obama has only been in office for 7 months. Logic would dictate there is, obviously, a much different standard Obama is being held to.

What's up, JJ. I was wondering if I was going to get your obligatory disapproval. Ha, nice to see you never disappoint. One of these day, you're going to give me an actual opinion so we can talk about, well, something. Looking forward to that moment, my friend.

Actually, that wouldn't surprise me at all. You seem like a pretty level headed, albeit a sometimes unnecessarily argumentative person. And you know how this place is. People are going to color you based on what they feel rather than what you actually say. I've been framed as all manner of things based on what people's interpretations and perspective rather than what I am actually saying. And a balanced opinion is always needed. Personally, I think you would be better served just to share your thoughts and just let the chips fall where they may. Ha, and it would give me something to actually have to think about. So few here can carry an honest debate...

It's really annoying and a catch 22 to get things evened out. DO THIS AND IT'LL WORK..uh no. I've been here on this site for 1 1/2 year. I know how it works. I understand the politics of this site. I cannot do it by myself....nor do I wish to.

Things won't ever even out, my friend. Many people here, it seems, don't have the insight, or even character to express their true opinion. It just is what it is. Some people I just like to poke a stick at because I find the opinions so outlandish and bogus, but there are some good people here. For me that makes it worth sifting through the drivel. I enjoy talking to people who actually have a thought out opinion and can present a perspective that I had not considered. I couldn't be less concerned about the political leanings of this particular site. Its value is allowing me to speak to people that I otherwise would not have the opportunity to. Some use it as a place to talk honestly. Some don't. Put it's pretty easy to tell who is worth my word and who isn't. But trust my friend. Ha, you are not alone in that...

J_Jammer thinks there should be more balance, while telling others to shut up. I think he doesn't really know what he wants here. He wants to convert us into being rude too?

Many of his comments 'push my buttons', I want to slam him back, but that is what he is being so rude for. He thinks we are all bad too. Don't feed his need to make people move away from issues, on to bickering.

Bickering with people like J_Jammer is like pissing in the wind. Why bother? Move along and respond to those who are genuinely trying to communicate. Don't waste time giving J_Jammer a voice, ignore him, he's not trying to gain balance, unless we are talking about balanced rudeness.

    • My thanks to Bluestranger and Mitch, you guys are correct,I used the shotgun approach concerning the people of South Carolina. I was painting with too broad of a brush when I Included everyone in the state of South Carolina, I do however stand by my assessment of Wilson and his being the face and voice of the current Republican party.
This present incarnation of the Republican party bears absolutely no resemblance, other than it's name, to the party that Dwight Eisenhower led.
I hope that the good people, the folks who ARE embarrassed by these usurpers show them the door and begin to elect men and women with some sense of honor and civility to replace them.
Again, I sincerely regret painting everyone in South Carolina with the same brush, but please, replace the embarrassing characters that are representing you to the nation and the world for God's sake.

Well J_Jammer, you are free to 'move along'. Current is not equal to 'tv news spin'. People choose to come to current and other sites to comment. Ordinary Americans turn to news they think they can 'trust' for facts.

So-called news should not be spun, led by opinions. Real news should be based on fact!

Jammer, there are plenty of right wing people that make very valid points on this site, and they are recognized for them when they are made. To name a few

      Alkamail

and I am sure a few others that I am forgetting. They say inflammatory things every once and a while, but so do the more intelligent left wing people on here.

You on the other hand, as has been pointed out on this very thread multiple times, do nothing but antagonize and never add anything relevant to any of the conversations. You run around waving your limp ____ every where screaming look at me look at me, and no one wants to see that s***. Is that in plain enough english for you?

He didn't speak the truth. Is that less painful for you to hear?

      ---------

OBAMA: Requiring insurance companies to cover preventive care like mammograms and colonoscopies "makes sense, it saves money, and it saves lives."

The facts: Studies have shown that much preventive care — particularly tests like the ones Obama mentions — actually costs money instead of saving it. That's because detecting acute diseases like breast cancer in their early stages involves testing many people who would never end up developing the disease. The costs of a large number of tests, even if they're relatively cheap, will outweigh the costs of caring for the minority of people who would have ended up getting sick without the testing.

The Congressional Budget Office wrote in August: "The evidence suggests that for most preventive services, expanded utilization leads to higher, not lower, medical spending overall."

That doesn't mean preventive care doesn't make sense or save lives. It just doesn't save money.

    • I don't think much should be made over one silly outburst but unfortunately it does show how far down we have come in the matter of civility and respect.

One thing though is the words he chose - "You lie" as opposed to a less accusative more tactful statement (even for an outburst) such as "That's not true!"

The latter at least can lead to debate whereas the former statement is accusatory and comes off as emotional and immature leading to heated words and very little to productive discussion.

Delia as per our discussion over the meaning of the word "outburst" I think it safe to conclude that Jammer uses a different dictionary than many other people so I don't think he will readily agree with that definition of tactful.

Of course you found him tactful.

      You like him.

That's like someone who is republican defending Bush. NO BIG DEAL THERE.

He was not tactful. Taking digs at people that you wish to unite...NOT TACTFUL. Subtle attacks NOT tactful.

And you're not tactful. So trusting you on what is and isn't tactful wouldn't be wise.

---and by the way tact is beneath the both of you and your gang of liberals.

I have as much proof of that as that parody of a republican has factual legs.

Reid didn't interupt a Bush speech so his examples are non-relatable or comparable to this sitaution.

Some Democrats booed Bush in one of his speeches (as did Republicans with Clinton perhaps starting the trend) but they didn't throw out accusations.

There is quite a difference between "boo!" and "You lie!"

What the heck are you talking about, Jammer? You're getting even more incoherent these days.

Obama's speech was planned and necessary since a lot of people were still confused about what was in the health care bill. Just a few weeks ago you were complaining that he "doesn't care" enough to explain it to people. Now he does and you call it an outburst?

Whether or not you like this story, it's certainly political news.

      - No difference in that and your post or anyone else's post who are "liberals" and especially no difference in the choice of 'news' -

And that makes no sense whatsoever to what I posted. The simple fact is that a scheduled organized speech is not an outburst. An accusatory shouted interuption is an outburst.

If you cannot see the difference in that simple fact...

Ooh I'm sorry. Intolerant to view other people's (liberal's for the most part) posts as retarded? Don't you love that word? I think you don't....I believe you don't. But there is no other word to discribe how this site is pandering to people who are liberals for NO FACTUAL bases.

I have decided that I will use the word retarded as often as I see any hate on religion and republicans and love of pot articles. The moment there is an equal balance (as it can be) between all lines of thought on these three retarded issues....I will drop the word from use.

And yes Obama's speech was an outburst. Every sentence was a single pandering outburst.

      Don't like it? Don't care.

You have a chance to alter that. Make things more better. I don't think anyone will bother....therefore I won't bother to try. It's time to annoy all of you the way your posts annoys half the world. The half that is silent, but now they can chuckle silently that the medicine is being taken by those that have given it for far too long without tasting it themselves.

Mmmm, I do not think that will happen Sam. To clear somethings up though

Bush proposed that idea, and was shot down so thoroughly even he dropped it... so even if Obama had the inkling to open the borders he would not because he would loose to much political clout by merely suggesting it.

Secondly, our immigration policies are chocking us. We are letting in day workers by the score... or they sneak over, and we do not need any more blue collar workers, we need to reduce the number we have. Then we make it damn near impossible for skilled workers to come in. H1 visas are incredibly hard to attain for engineers, chemists, programmers... all things that we have a shortage of workers for... incidentally Obama has made obtaining such a visa even harder FYI... I stay pretty up to date on this stuff because I have a friend who is Indian with a masters degree in engineering that is busting it trying to get a visa... he has applied to over 6000 open positions and none of them will sponsor him for the visa because it is so hard to get and it is a risk to the company hiring someone who might not be able to stay... that is ridiculous... partly that there are 6k jobs not filled even in this economy!!!

There was an interesting report done by the Council of Foreign Relations cfr.org on immigration, they are a very bipartisan think tank, and are good at looking at things from all angles. Anyway, this particular report was chaired by Jeb Bush (who is a whole lot smarter than his brother) and it explains the immigration problem from the excess blue collar and squeezed white collar perspectives very well.

This a a link to it
      http://www.cfr.org/publication/20030/

It costs $8 at Barnes and Nobles
      http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbninquiry.asp?ean=9780876094211&am...

The real problem we have with immigration by the way... is them not paying taxes because they are working illegally... when they work legally they are all but citizens in the respect that they do not cost us anything. I agree with you that immigration is a problem, it just has a whole lot more angles that most people are not taking into account.

I don't think he represents all Republicans but he does represent a prevalent mentality that has afflicted many in the party and this afflication dates back to the first year of Clinton's presidency and the rise of popularity of Rush Limbaugh.

There has been a festering visceral hatred growing in a number of republicans particarly of the social conservative/neo-con bent which drives many of them to such lengths as blatant hypocrisy and ironically even unpatriotic behavior despite their flag waving - rush hoping Obama the president would fail for example.

Level-headed republicans if there are any left need to curb their excesses and push them to the fringe.

Tyr, you have a lot of good ideas and a relatively keen thought process. You seem to have developed a blind spot in some areas though. Being from a certain state doesn't define a person. I am from Texas. On most political issues the majority of my fellow citizens and I disagree. At the same time it aggravates me when someone calls them names. That's my job. Unless you live in S.C. try not to denigrate it's peoples. There is most likely a person living there that thinks the same as you, right up to the point where you demonstrate a sense of superiority.
We all make statements that we wish we wouldn't have. I make at least three or four everyday. When someone points them out i always think of a quote that my daughters like to remind me of. "It's not what you say it's how you say it".
