Student Fined 300 Euros for Displaying Israeli Flag in Germany

A local district court in the West German city of Bochum fined a student 300 Euros on Wednesday for displaying an Israel flag at a demonstration organized by Muslim organizations against the IDF Operation Cast Lead in January. According to Der Westen, a regional paper in Bochum, the public prosecutor termed the Israeli flag as "provoking" within a special situation.
The 30-year-old student, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she fears for her safety due to "massive problems with Nazis", told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday that the "Israeli flag is a provocation for the anti-Semites." She asked rhetorically, "What is provocative about an Israel flag?" The public prosecutor in Bochum was not available for an immediate comment on the case.
According to Der Westen, the local district court judge deemed the protest of the five activists expressing solidarity with Israel as a "dangerous situation."
A spokesman for the district court, Volker Talarowski, told the Post that there was a "violation of the right to assembly" and the court's decision was issued "independent of a political motivation." Talarowski added that the pro-Israel demonstrators failed to register their protest 48 hours before the event.
Yet the student, who is appealing the fine, said a special regulation permits "spontaneous" demonstrations without a pre-registration. In response to a hardcore anti-Israeli demonstration in Bochum attended by 1,600 protesters on January 17, the student, along with four pro-Israeli activists, displayed a banner stating "Against anti-Semitism and fascism: Solidarity with Israel" as well as the Israel flag. She told the Post that pro-Palestinian supporters "compared Israel with Nazi Germany." Chants of "children murderer Israel" and "Israel terrorist" filled the protest as well as a banner reading "stop the Holocaust in Gaza."
"There is no basis" to draw a parallel between Nazi Germany and Israel, she said. "A Holocaust did not take place in Gaza. Israel defended its territory from rocket fire" emanating from Hamas, added the student. She termed the argument comparing the Israeli military operation in Gaza with the Holocaust as anti-Semitic.
In the Der Westen news report, the student said there is a "confusion of perpetrator and victim. You can only call that anti-Semitism." She told the Post that the protestors in Bochum designated Israelis as Nazis and the Palestinians in Gaza as Jews during the Third Reich.
During Operation Cast Lead over 100,000 mainly German Muslims protested across German cities and frequently compared Israel with the Hitler movement. The European Union's working definition of anti-Semitism defines such comparisons between the Nazis and the Jewish state as a modern manifestation of anti-Semitism, largely because the parallel delegitimizes Israel's right to exist.

Could it be that any country that has allowed Muslims to enter and expand, later gets the twisted "thank you" in the form of violence, demonstrations, rioting and complaints and hate crimes against Christians?
Like kids in a classroom, they "pay back" a nice teacher by giving trouble and disrupting class.
The students and the immigrants think that niceness means weakness. - 2 years ago

Well my dear poster, after your opening line stating that "The Germans are consistent in their decadence and moral bankruptcy" it is clear that you are exhibiting the same myopic and nationalistic world-view you are accusing others to have.
Most of the actions surrounding this story are based on individual actions that are, to say the least, questionable. There are the few violent protesters, the students who hung flags and banners from this building, and the police-officers who thought the best way to pacify this situation would be to remove the flags.
The actions of the police have been strongly criticized by all political parties in Germany, there was a pro-Israel solidarity demonstration a few weeks later, the police officers involved in this incident were investigated and the violent protesters were being searched for as well.
My take on this incident is that because the police were understaffed at this demonstration (280 police officers vs. over 1,600 demonstrators) the decision was made that it would be more effective to remove the flags than to try to contain the protesters, some of which were ready to destroy property.
The police caught a lot of flak for this action afterward by all political parties and the cops who entered the apartments were investigated.
The 300 Euro fine above is definitely arguable, but put in the context of the overall situation in Jan. '09 at the height of the war and the danger of an escalation of violence in the street and a possible storming of this building by the mob, the court's opinion that it was an act of provocation is not entirely irrational I think.
Throwing all of Germany into one pot with your opening line just tells more about yourself than anything. - 2 years ago

If it is on the side of the home then what is the big deal?
Side of an apartment building....I can somewhat see the big deal.
Either way 300 any currency is excessive.

I am not Israeli,....(just Texan),....perhaps criminal in some ways in its own right,...but still,....THE ISSUE IS MORE COMPLEX THAN THAT. (books n books nboooooooks worth of complexities.)
I'm sure Palestine both deserves and appreciates the "Shout Out!",.....but stupid people will not solve this (unless they take themselves OUT). VERY BAD for the rest of us,....IF we survive it. I for one do not want to be the "collateral damage" of this kind of thinking and pin-head simplification. - 2 years ago

Ive said this before and ill say it again. There are a BILLION Muslims practicing around the world. You really think that they are the cause of all the worlds problems? Please. Now if you were to say religious conflict(Jews, Muslims, Christians, etc) was the cause of much of the worlds problems i can agree with you. But no please continue to spout your BIGOTED anti-muslim propaganda. See i agree Islam is a religion and not a race so you are bigots not racists. Glad to clear that up for you.

First I do not think that Muslims in and of them selves are a problem, and I am defenitely not pro Israel, but akamaial has a point. Muslims in countries around the world cause problems.
Malaysia, Philippines, Germany, China, India... to list a few are all experiencing huge problems because of Muslims.
In China they are running around stabbing people with syringes, in Malaysia and the Philippines they just like to blow stuff and people up... in Germany, groups of Turks regularly beat the hell out of random non-Turk Germans. There are a lot of examples of this kind of behavior around the world where there are large concentrations of Muslims... they are violent... Christians and Jews are no better though, they are just more passive aggressive about it.
Something tells me that akamaial and myself have seen a little bit more of the world than the two of you... so instead of getting immediately all hot and bothered, you should probably take a step back and consider what has been said thus far.

Since I am now labeled a zionist, then should I declare you to be a apologist? It is evident that you believe that I fail to see the"big" picture - when it is you who fail to acknowledge (or admit) the cultural stagnation within Islam, and its oppression upon the people where its influence is established.... one can easily observe the "fruits" of this "religion of peace" and see that it is rotten.
Partake of this rotten fruit or apologize for its stench if you will, but not I. - 2 years ago

I would have to say that all religions have a propensity to emit the same stench as you so eloquently put it... even Tibetan Buddhists are violent from time to time. The point is that it is human nature to strive to be on top, and organized religion only adds another obscured layer of ruthless competition from all sides. Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Muslims, Wiccans, and Atheists all participate (who am I leaving out? It was not on purpose)... Muslims have a particular method that is deemed completely socially unacceptable... Christians have some how parkerized their zealotry as commendable in the west, yet there actions are just as deplorable.
The irony of it all is that every single one of those religions, including atheist are fighting over how best to recognize each other as brothers and sisters and to be treated fairly... with respect.
In short, the whole GD thing is stupid... any affiliation including atheism is just contributing to the problem... and to excuse anyone including Muslims for their actions because of regional polarizations is equally as ignorant.

Germany has never forgiven the Jews for the Holocaust. A nation in denial. In fact, Germany ceased to be a nation in 1945. It lost its soul. Since then it has been merely an economy. And right now it does more trade with that Holocaust denying Jew hating genocidal shit hole Iran than any other country in Europe.

no.
the student wasnt fined for displaying an Israel flag.
she was fined for displaying an Israel flag at a place the police has declared to evacuate.the police has had not enought man to seperate the demonstrationes so the officials declared both to be ended and requestet all people to leave the place.
the student resisted and displayed the flag instead of leaving the current place. this happend to close to the other demonstration to be acceptebal, according to the german laws.
the fine is becouse of ignoring the order of the police, not becouse of the flag itself.
