Muslims fear backlash each 9/11

Image
Future_America
Eight years after 9/11, many U.S. Muslims still struggle through the anniversary of the attacks. Yes, the sting has lessened. For the younger generation of Muslims, the tragedy can even seem like a distant memory. "Time marches on," said Souha Azmeh Al-Samkari, a 22-year-old student at the University of Dayton in Ohio.

Yet, many American Muslims say Sept. 11 will never be routine, no matter how many anniversaries have passed.

The anniversary brings a mix of emotions: sorrow over the huge loss of life, anguish over the wars that followed, but also resentment over how the hijackings so completely transformed the place of Muslims in the U.S. and beyond.

A poll released this week by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life found that 38 percent of Americans believe Islam is more likely than other faiths to encourage violence. That is down from 45 percent two years earlier.

It is now common in U.S. mosques for Muslims to preface public remarks by saying they know the government is eavesdropping but Muslims have nothing to hide.

    • The Koran and Bible contradict eachother. Both books have violent and intolerant messages, as well as tolerant and peaceful messages.

For example, the Koran says to fight against Christians and Jews (9:29), but also to treat them with kindness and patience (2:109).

The Bible says to love your enemies (Matthew 5:44), but also to hate your enemies (1 Corinthians 16:22).

    • These are core Islamic texts recognised as the word of God by all Muslims and Islamic schools of jurisprudence:

Bukhari:V4B52N220 "Allah's Apostle said, 'I have been made victorious with terror.'"
Qur'an:8:12 "I shall terrorize the infidels. So wound their bodies and incapacitate them because they oppose Allah and His Apostle."
Qur'an:8:57 "If you gain mastery over them in battle, inflict such a defeat as would terrorize them, so that they would learn a lesson and be warned."
Ishaq:326 "If you come upon them, deal so forcibly as to terrify those who would follow, that they may be warned. Make a severe example of them by terrorizing Allah's enemies."
Qur'an:8:67 "It is not fitting for any prophet to have prisoners until he has made a great slaughter in the land."
Ishaq:588 "When the Apostle descends on your land none of your people will be left when he leaves."
Tabari IX:42 "We have been dealt a situation from which there is no escape. You have seen what Muhammad has done. Arabs have submitted to him and we do not have the strength to fight. You know that no herd is safe from him. And no one even dares go outside for fear of being terrorized."
Ishaq:326 "Allah said, 'No Prophet before Muhammad took booty from his enemy nor prisoners for ransom.' Muhammad said, 'I was made victorious with terror. The earth was made a place for me to clean. I was given the most powerful words. Booty was made lawful for me. I was given the power to intercede. These five privileges were awarded to no prophet before me.'"
Ishaq:327 "Allah said, 'A prophet must slaughter before collecting captives. A slaughtered enemy is driven from the land. Muhammad, you craved the desires of this world, its goods and the ransom captives would bring. But Allah desires killing them to manifest the religion.'"
Qur'an:7:3 "Little do you remember My warning. How many towns have We destroyed as a raid by night? Our punishment took them suddenly while they slept for their afternoon rest. Our terror came to them; Our punishment overtook them."
Ishaq:510 "When the Apostle looked down on Khaybar he told his Companions, 'O Allah, Lord of the Devils and what into terror they throw, and Lord of the winds and what they winnow, we ask Thee for the booty of this town and its people. Forward in the name of Allah.' He used to say this of every town he raided."
Bukhari:V5B59N512 "The Prophet offered the Fajr Prayer [Prayer of Fear] near Khaybar when it was still dark. He said, 'Allahu-Akbar!' [Allah is Greatest] Khaybar is destroyed, for whenever we approach a hostile nation to fight, then evil will be the morning for those who have been warned.' Then the inhabitants came out running on their roads. The Prophet had their men killed; their children and woman were taken as captives."

    • they stand up against them publicly to appease non muslums but wheres the martin luther king to oppose malcolm x. the mother theresa against crusaders.where is the movement to move islam out of the dark ages?
islam in the middle east is in a state of war, only the aggressors know it the passives don accept it. we are asking muslums to not sit back and say its enough to simply live by example when other muslums are highjacking thier identity.
terrorists are not islam they are a perversion and islam insists that islam is to be protected.
the biggest threat to arabs is the fear mongering west
the greatest threat to islam is islamic jihadists

    • To put it in the simplest terms possible, there are a lot of crazy people from every part of the world! People always fear what they don't understand! Terrorist can come from anywhere they could even come from another planet! That's a little unlikely, but the point I am trying to get across here, is if people took the time to Learn about other cultures & learn to accept the fact that everyone on this Earth is very different,I think that would make the world a better place! The war in Iraq has been going on LONG before the US ever decided to get in the middle of it all! Since before the Bible was written! I don't think the world will ever be a peaceful place! Humans are just too ignorant to have any real respect for much of anything honestly! About a week after the 9-11 attacks I found my self in a train station for the first time in my whole life,I was sitting in the station next to four guys in turbans! I wasn't the least bit scared really! I actually had a conversation with one of the men, despite a slight accent, he spoke great English & expressed to me that he was very fearful of going anywhere after what happened! We ended up talking most of the ride in to Washington state! He was a very nice man & had much to say about respecting others!

    • morgan and its also sad that some Muslims used hate as a reason to do 9/11... there ya go akamaial and abraham, et al... i am a Muslim speaking out against Islamic terrorists... or am i lying like you claim Muslims do when they speak out against something you accuse them of never speaking out against...

you know after 9/11 i was on the local NBC news WTOV9 and i was invited there to speak out about how Osama and the hijackers message was not in line with the message of Islam and i did do that... i was supposed to be given a half hour interview... you know how long i got? 5 minutes.. and i got cut off because they needed to show footage of the bombings in the Middle East that we were doing in response to 9/11... now how many people do you think got to see my 5 min segment?!

    • And just because you have never heard a Christian denounce fundamentalists doesn't mean that doesn't happen either. But then, many never miss a chance to lump all Christians into their neat little judgemental compartments when it suits them. I personally have heard Muslims, Christians and Jews denounce extremism, but you won't see that in the media covered fairly regarding any of them. And that is where the misconceptions come in, especially when you have people on the Internet cherrypicking stories as well to suit their own prejudiced motives.

    • JanforGore:

I don't think I've ever claimed that all Christians are fundamentalists or anything of the sort. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've said the exact opposite.

Me: "Don't most of us realize and agree that not ALL anything can be generalized? How can we use words like "Democrats" "Christians" "Atheists" "Muslims" "Americans" and avoid this inevitable debate about stereotyping?"

"There are many mentalities perpetuated by fundamentalists (on ALL sides) that are dangerous and problematic."

Sorry if you were not responding to me specifically, but it did seem like you were.

    • I can't believe some of the ignorant posts on this board. Stop blaming the entire religion of Islam. Muslims live from far reaching parts in Africa to South East Asia. The Middle East IS NOT THE ONLY PLACE MUSLIMS LIVE! Are we clear?

This was a group of assholes that hijacked planes. We don't think that Timothy McVeigh represents the entirity of the US armed forces do we? We don't think that every Roman Catholic white male is a domestic terrorist, do we?

Stop with this generalizations, stop with racism based off of phenotype, stop listening to media which is exploiting these cultural differences to create canyons of misunderstanding and intolerance.

And STOP telling people how to live! It isn't up to us, it is NOT our place. We do not have authority over other people's lives, and the moment you find yourself in that position of power you need to re-examine your role in the world, need to re-evaluate your own religion beliefs and your own ideas of intolerance and hatred. I can't believe this, after all of this talk about "western civilization," it just doesn't seemed so civilized all of a sudden.

mhm. you've got a point. And Jews killed Jesus. So I hate them. But then again, Christians have killed a lot of people in the past. So they all suck, too. Black people steal and stuff. So they're out. Hispanic people come into this country and steal our jobs and don't learn the language. They are evil! Charles Manson was a straight white male, so I hate all of them. Oh, and there was some girl in my school who was gay who I didn't like. I'll blame it on the fact that she was gay and hate all gays.

Yeah. Because the acts of some/blind and ignorant stereotypes totally reflect the acts of the group on the whole, and when someone acts wrong, you shouldn't blame them as a person, but as a religious group/race/gender/sexuality/caste member etc....

p.s.-you DO realize what America is, right? A blank slate, a country that belongs to no race or religion. There are tons of Muslims/Middle Easterns that are Americans. This was an act against them and their freedom/way of life, too.

      *sigh*

Say it with me-Extremist, not MUSLIMS as a whole, committed a crime against Americans (Which includes Muslim and middle eastern people).

I have NO sympathy for EXTREMISTS of ANY sorts-be them black, white, liberal, conservative, christian, atheist, gay or straight. I have no sympathy for people who don't respect others and their right to live freely (as long as it doesn't infringe on other people and their right)

I do have sympathy for a group of people who are being discriminated against and judged because other people don't want to sit down and think for more than two seconds and seperate them from the extremist that committed a disgusting crime against Americans.

      http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,62151,00.html

Look through this list. See that some of the names are Muslim/Middle Eastern? THEY WERE VICTIMS TOO.

    • it makes me crazy to hear how many people keep on whining about middle eastern people and the Islamic religion in general when it was extremist who did this. Quit blaming a whole pupulation and race of people for it. Playing on blind hatred and scapegoating in the reason why 90% of wars start in the first place, especially American ones.
People seem to forget about how the Romans came to Europe and made the pre-Christian indingenous peoples convert (or be killed). Then there were all the Inquisitions by the Europeans in their lands, and later on in the new lands, and the forced conversion (or be killed) of non-christians or people of different denominations from the Queen or King of the given moment. How about the forced exile of Jews from Spain by the Alahambra decree and the Reconquista against the Muslims? But that's too long ago. Fine, recent history- Over 6 million Jews were killed when Hitler easily played on the Anti-Semitism (Jews killed our Jesus!) of the European population. Still too long ago? Ok fine. Don't get me started on how damaging homophobia still is, and a lot of people base their racism on their skwered versions of bible verses. Ever heard of Prussian Blue? Save the good christian white people from the minority and non-pure scourge! & How about Ann Coulter (Let's Cut Of Their Heads and Convert Them To Christianity) and Bill O'Rilley (Pink-Pistol Packing LEsbians!!!)
We don't blame those cruel and unforgivable acts or beliefs on all Christians. We recognize that people act seperate, on their own, away from all stereotypes and social ties people may put on them because of what they are or what they believe in, and do wrong on their own vocation, and you can't blame the relgion they claim to do these things for.
I just wish we could grant the same grace to other people and religions.

    • Muslims fear backlash every 9/11???

So does anyone with general tolerance or a yearning for peace or a social conscience. That was a point in time that changed not only how this and interlocked countries operate,... but also changed people's perceptions and prejudices. So every time 9/11 is spoken,... we fear intensified hatred, violence, revenge or war.

And,... have these past, present and future battles helped to solve the problems? Or is all this bloodshed worsening our woes, raising tensions, strengthening prejudices and/or creating further terrorism?!

I smell an unholy, cultural war a brewin',... and it scares the bejeesus outta me.

      PEACE!

My own parents wouldn't go to my wedding because of hate, they never even met my husband untill 1984 4 years after marrying him. That was during the hostage crisis and then this shit happens and that brings out the hate again. I see it every year and hear some form of hate everyday.I am white and older.

BratMom; you're story is earnest and gross. Aren't human prejudices disgusting? I have very beloved people in my life, that very often hafta hide or deny their Muslim heritage. They are teenagers! And outta pure fear (or maybe a peer-pressured self-loathing),... they cannot truly speak about their own heritage, family members and for years have distanced themselves from their family's faith.
It's sickening that our species, after thousands of years, have still not learned to coexist or tolerate. YUCK!

But as an American I apologise to Muslims that had nothing to do with the crazinest and are being treated like crap. and to Afican Americans that have been treated like shit also.I was raised in a very hatefull family and I am so glad i grew up and away from their hate.

    • If Muslims are afraid of backlash maybe they should be.
People maybe suspicious of Muslims because the rest of America has NEVER heard the denunciation by Muslims of Muslims committing acts of violence in the name of Islam. I do recall well in the succeeding months after the attacks, Mullahs and Imams explaining why WE must understand the motivations for the attacks. The rationalizations for the attacks, the excuses. While I do hear once in awhile normal workaday Muslims denounce the attacks as un-Muslim, it is always those well read individuals, those educated in the Koran, who are the most vocal and articulate in justifying the attacks on September 11th.
We in the west and the U.S. are suppsoed to excuse this behavior because the antique culture of Muslims cannot seem to get past 632 A.D.
In the final analysis, it was not Presbyterians, Methodists, Quakers or Baptists who committed these acts of war.
If Muslims fear backlash, then that is good.
That fear should be cultivated and nurtured.
They started this war in 1979.

Your statement blows me away. Where do you get your information? Do you understand extremism? Just because some "Imam" gets up on stage or camera and says "blah blah 9/11 is justified oh and ps. i'm speaking on behalf of all Muslims...because i'm an Imam", doesn't make him a Muslim or even give him the authority to speak for all Muslims. It's no different of a situation than that of a certain Baptist Minister wishing Obama to be killed. Does this Minister speak on behalf of all Baptists? Definitely not.

just because the muslims didnt bring the news of their opposition to terrorism on a silver platter, does not mean it isn't happening. If all it takes for you to not dislike all muslims is knowing that initiative is being taken, then maybe you should simply check into it and see if it is happening. Don't rely on corporate media to tell you who the bad guys are, and what people are really up to. there is plenty material here on current on this particular issue of muslims making it known that they oppose the views of the extremists.

Don't be selfish and self loathing people, I feel for anyone who is put down and beat up and harassed for these reasons! Love your neighbor, coworker, and even the bum on the corner. We're all just people on this earth trying to live and be happy, so help each other out, instead of beating them up and always pushing them down. And I'm saying this for everyone, not just Muslims... openn your minds! and ur hearts...

In trying to assess American failures leading up to 9/11 there is much to go around.

I asked about Berger because the documents he was caught stealing have to do with the Clinton administration's failures r.e. 9/11.

I think Bush deserves some blame, no question. However, I think the previous administrations, to include Bush I, deserve some scrutiny as well.

    • About two months after 9/11, one of my best friends figured out I was an Arab-American. I was living in Orlando, Florida, this friend was white, and the half American part didn't really matter to him. So the very day he figured it out, he initiated a fight with me. at the time, i was 14 and had never been in a real fight before. I was very worried about the outcome of this.

He never landed a punch on me, and i ended up breaking his ribs in front of all of his friends that were egging him on. His friends later approached me, trying to sympathize with me, claiming what he tried to do was wrong. I didnt bother pretending to care about them. Yet, im not trying to sit here and act macho at all, im not even proud that it had to come to that. I was lucky to go up against someone that couldnt follow through with tough and arrogant talk he had.

Since then, i have never feared the arrogance of the ignorant. I actually look to flesh it out of people and society. But i dont do so with the intent of resolving it a physical manner, and have not done so since that first incident. I wont hide it, i get a rise out debating with ignorant people that feel so self righteous about their feelings, just to put them in their place. I walk tall on 9/11; knowing that i had nothing to do with it, nor do i support the actions, so they do not reflect me. I know many that lost friends and family on 9/11, and it is typically those that are directly effected by it that are more compassionate towards my ethnic mix then those that get rallied with a sense of nationalism. I love the idea of what America can be, and strive to get us to that place, one day and ignorant person at a time.

I share the same perspective. Exchange your 14 year old situation with being told to "go back to Africa" by a friend when I was lobbying at 16 to get the confederate portion of the state flag taken off (never been :) ).

If I had let experiences like that and others throughout my life embitter or victimize me, I would have missed out on so many amazing people in my life.

If ALL races and religions were judged by the worst in their cultures we would ALL appear to be a violent, ignorant, uneducated lot. I try to uplift through positivity and truth, but there will always be those who want to see only stereotypes and misinformation.

Just as you said, knowing yourself makes one walk tall regardless. Thanks.

Steve Coll's book on the Bin Laden's talks about how the Bin Laden sisters living in America and Europe openly cried when faced with having to go live in a Muslim country (Saudi Arabia in this case) again.

What happened to your daughter is horrible and hateful. I think she is lucky to live here as far worse things happen to women in countries run by Muslims.

Repression in Muslim countries has more to do with politics than religion, religion is the excuse, politics is the catalyst. We've seen this over and over in history, religious groups are as peaceful as their political situation.

Your response is shameful as are some of the other reply's. Of course its better here in America for women because we made it one of our most prized virtues just like the virtue of equality of races and religions. To argue this is slapping the faces of the people that died and where imprisoned for these rights. Who cares how things are done in some other part of the world! In this country, while it may have not been founded on these principles, has adopted the safe keeping and rights of both minorities and women because it was the morally right thing to do. To say these people are crying because they feel excluded from the very essence of protection and prosperity that this nation, on the surface, has promised all peoples is both lacking morals and honesty. This is at the very hart of the debate on what it means to be a truly American, black, white christian or Muslim. How would you feel if i beat the snot out of your cracker ass because you don't believe the same thing i do, i bet there would not be a bucket big enuff to hold your tears.

    • Never forget what happened to your country on 9/11.

Moderate Muslims should separate themselves publicly from the likes of Al Qaida and other extremist jihadi groups.

Every Friday in Iran is death to America day as the people chant, pray and walk. Notice there is no similar thing happening in the US against any Islamic country (not even Saudi Arabia!).

The only Muslim victims of 9/11 were working in the WTC and killed by other Muslims on that fateful day.

      Never forget!

I have been to Iran 5 times. I have had no trouble most of the people want to ask you questions. I have blue eyes and what I got was I wish I had your color eyes. I only felt threatend when I went rite after 1980 Khomeni was there. But you know those groups saying Mah Bah Amrica they weren't as big as the news showed. Not all Muslims feel the way those who did the deed. Most people in Iran ENVY us. They wish they could have the freedom like we do. I just wish people could be a little more open minded when it comes to other cultures.I can only hope one day Iran can be like it was when the Shah was there without the poverty I saw, and the Shahs police called the SAVAK,they were horrible.

sam we do... but so often when we do... like is the case with a couple of people on ehre... we are told that Muslims lie to avoid persecution... so even when we do speak out against this stuff... we're not believed

      Medina,

I agree with what you say. What you describe should not be. It is wrong, even if it comes from the doctrine of deception practiced by those who embrace violent jihad. Obviously, people are misapplying that notion and broad brushing Muslims. It's wrong and leads to distrust and miscommunication.

But given that, one would then have to decide whether to continue being truthful or not. I'm old and naive but I still believe that truth speaks to power. I think the truth can set us free.

    • It is the failure to cherish the differences in others that causes the amount of suffering that we see in our world. And only by changing our individual ways of thinking will we be able to overcome suffering
