Thousands protest Obama's health care plan at the U.S. Capitol

Image
AwesomeJosh
Tens of thousands of protesters fed up with government spending marched to the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, showing their disdain for the president's health care plan with slogans such as "Obamacare makes me sick" and "I'm not your ATM."

The line of protesters clogged several blocks near capitol, according to the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency. Demonstrators chanted "enough, enough" and "We the People." Others yelled "You lie, you lie!" and "Pelosi has to go," referring to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Throngs of people waved U.S. flags and held signs reading "Go Green Recycle Congress" and "I'm Not Your ATM." Men wore colonial costumes as they listened to speakers who warned of "judgment day" - Election Day 2010.

Other signs - reflecting the growing intensity of the health care debate - depicted President Barack Obama with the signature mustache of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler. Many made reference to Obama as a socialist or communist, and another imposed his face on that of the villainous Joker from "Batman."

Richard Brigle, 57, a Vietnam War veteran and former Teamster, came from Paw Paw, Mich. He said health care needs to be reformed - but not according to Obama's plan.

"My grandkids are going to be paying for this. It's going to cost too much money that we don't have," he said while marching, bracing himself with a wooden cane as he walked.

FreedomWorks Foundation, a conservative organization led by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, organized several groups from across the country for what they billed as a "March on Washington."

Organizers say they built on momentum from the April "tea party" demonstrations held nationwide to protest tax policies, along with growing resentment over the economic stimulus packages and bank bailouts.

Armey and other speakers directed their ire at Pelosi - Armey took a photo, telling the crowd he wanted to be able to prove to her they were there.

"If it's necessary, we'll come back here next year," he said.

Many protesters said they paid their own way to the event - an ethic they believe should be applied to the government. They say unchecked spending on things like a government-run health insurance option could increase inflation and lead to economic ruin.

Terri Hall, 45, of Starke, Fla., said she felt compelled to become political for the first time this year because she was upset by government spending.

"Our government has lost sight of the powers they were granted," she said. She added that the deficit spending was out of control, and said she thought it was putting the country at risk.

Race also became an issue when a black Republican leader denounced African-American politicians that she said had an "affinity" for socialism.

"I'm outraged prominent black politicians use the race card" to cover up their failed policies, said Deneen Borelli.

Lawmakers also supported the rally. Rep. Mike Pence, chairman of the House Republican Conference, said Americans want health care reform but they don't want a government takeover.

"Republicans, Democrats and independents are stepping up and demanding we put our fiscal house in order," Pence, of Indiana, told The Associated Press.

"I think the overriding message after years of borrowing, spending and bailouts is enough is enough."

Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., and Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., also spoke at the rally. DeMint said he'd had enough of "Alice in Wonderland" politicians promising more programs at the risk of financial disaster.

"The president has warned us if we disagree with him he's going to call us out," DeMint said. "Well, Mr. President, we are out."

    • As a billionaire, I am really glad these working class people are out there fighting on my behalf, for free! They're so cute. So much cheaper than lobbyists. If they only knew I'm the one denying their loved ones access to treatment. Haha!

Jeeves! Prepare me another caviar bath. I think some working class dupes just gave themselves high blood pressure! Ka-ching! Hahahahahaha!

    • I'm not exactly sure what these people are protesting...

Are they FOR paying more for health care out of pocket than they would in tax increases?

Are they FOR bankrupting the country by pouring more and more of the GNP into insurance companies?

Are they FOR keeping an ever burgeoning list of fellow Americans uninsured and one accident away from being completely destitute?

Are they FOR incentives that financially reward hospitals for denial of service and punish doctors for innovation and experimentation?

Are they FOR unfettered Capitalism that destroys the environment, tramples the common Joe and has only money as it's goal?

Also, I do not believe they understand what Fascism is or who the Nazi's were. They might want to go back and take Western History 101 instead of getting their lessons from Beck, Hannity, and Limbaugh. Sadly, none of them will ever watch Sicko.

It's hard to believe their brains have the capacity to operate a car much less function at a high enough level to hold a job... oh, wait... never mind, the Republican recession just laid them off. Ah, the madness of the mob.

Exactly why I made that thread asking people what is ok to complain about Obama and how...to do it.

Because people like you claim it's ok but when it's done you justify stating how stupid they are with NOTHING but speculation. You're no better than who you're complaining about because you got your information from a bias source that is willing to make them look stupid just to make Obama look better.

Corporate shills telling them to be angry? Think, man! That line of BS has been used to dismiss these protesters ad nauseum. These are middle class folks excercising their free speech rights. Why is that viewed as a threat? It's not "agreeing to disagree"- it's trying to silence and dismiss the opposition- marginalizing these protesters as "corporate shills" shows the left has absolutely no interest in a free exchange of ideas. "I believe in tolerance and diversity- but disagree with me, you're a bigot/homophobe........"

    • I am sick to death of these lunatics. THEY ARE A BIG MOUTHED MINORITY!!!!! 70% of Americans have already indicated they want a choice of either a government option or a private plan. END OF DISCUSSION. If these folks don't want government health care they can continue to allow their private insurance companies to rape them for every penny they have. There are 45 million people who need this!! If our private system had a way to insure them at a reasonable cost, I wouldn't say a word. But this plan is primarily for the ones the private system has discarded i.e. those who can't afford private insurance, those, those who can't get it because they have a pre-existing condition, people who have been kicked off a private plan because their condition is expensive and cuts into their profits too much. Of course the party of "life" won't have anything to do with it because they are more concerned in making sure the black man will fail. What want a disgusting load of human excrement these toads are. Where the hell were these fools when Bush led us into an illegal war.

Tell my why the Bush Administration made health care in Iraq (which American tax dollars help fund) their constitutional right but not here in America!!!

      CONSERVATIVE THY NAME IS HYPOCRITE!

More incoherence from the j_stammer... hooray...

Mark, another poll... a nationally run one, like an election would be very nice right about now...

It is interesting how it has been forgotten that both serious contestants in the national elections last year felt it necessary to include health care reform in their policies to even be able to compete with each other... Obama set the precedence, and McCain nearly lost his shirt because he was so slow in developing a plan as well...

It is also interesting that the voters were so upset about McCain not having a plan at the time, and now are upset that someone is actually trying to implement a plan... which has borrowed huge amounts of policy from McCain's plan because it made sense I might add.

This is all incredibly crazy... just really really really crazy.

    • Mark701:

Many, no matter what you state, did not like McCain and were not happy he was picked.

HOWEVER, they are at fault for not voting. They did not come out in "droves" like those that voted for Obama.

Now they feel as if they should speak out.

So stating that it has a stamp of approval by an old republican doesn't mean that it should be liked by others. That's like stating a shouter of "YOU LIE" speaks for all.

Your one for all attitude as if it is truly a great concept to apply to everything is really just Bravo smart.

The fact that 65% is considered good for an election is pretty darn sad.

The fact that that leaves 35% (not including the illegals that voted illegally---didn't they?) who did not vote and those that did vote voting AGAINST the other so that Obama or McCain wouldn't become President....there's a lot of factors that just worked into this.

    • America is almost certainly going bankrupt -- but Health Care reform isn't the demon... how about the 'Lone Super Power' war machine that started two unjustified and un-winnable wars... based on lies and fear and greed.

Estimates for that madness work their way up to 10 trillion dollars: http://www.harpers.org/archive/2009/01/0082337

I argue, debate the HEALTH CARE proposal and fight the bloat and the potential conflicts of interest -- but let's take responsibility for the real economic disaster that we have all allowed to happen.

    • It is about time this happened.
Meanwhile 0 is absent up in Al Franken country humping the load of excrement which will drag this economy deeper into bankruptcy.
The government has departed from its job of governance and into the un-Constitutional and inappropriate role of a provider.
While the people in power did not start this, they made worse the process started by their predecessors with the New Deal and Great Society programs. Both are now obsolete and need to be removed for the most part.
We have now the worst president in U.S. history, who has still not shed the role of campaigning community organizer and seems ambivalent about donning the true, the expected, role of responsibility. He seems quite comfortable being the former and letting Americans die in Iraq and Afghanistan.

      While 0bama lies, Americans die.
      Because 0bama lies, Americans die.

So this is hope and change?

      seriously how is this communistic?
who is trying to create some weired hysteria?

the plan sounds jolly good for the people who already have insurance. and those who could be getting insurance of some kind.

*end discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions
*limit premium discrimination agaisnt people based on age and gender
      * cap on out of pocket expenese

*****this makes us wonder who really is upset with the president's plan? is it those who invested on insurance companies? is it companies who do not want a change?

is it poor who don't have insurance because certainly the president is not offering free health care for everyone?? people without money should be upset that the presidential team are not acting like socialist
      helpers.
what a bunch of jerks this administrations is turning out to be --my lord!!!

so this makes us wonder who really is trying to agitate
& create misinformed protest to get a negative vote on this bill!

      3. Do you even know how to define communism?

You could have just stated that anyone who said that was wrong...instead of subtly denying it and calling the person who said it a liar at the same time.

"I don't remember that" is unnecessary in the reply if it truly was wrong to state. Whether or not it's true that there were people that did it...the statement can be judged by itself as wrong or right.

Hmm, a quick Google search returned only 183,000 results for "Bush Fascist" and the only prominent name that appeared is Bill Mahr... whom is not well respected... I mean, the man dated Ann Coulter for crying out loud... makes me quiver in disgust... the equally as ignorant remark I made definitely stands for Bill Mahr.

Google search for "Obama fascist" ... 3,510,00

Hmm, so who is trying to save face? I never heard anyone call Bush a fascist... it is pretty evident that I do not remember it because I did not hear it... the comparison makes as much sense for Bush as it does for Obama... which is absolutely none.

Keep up with the mindless accusations and belly aching j_stammer... I would have figured you noticed that I do not make baseless remarks by now... but you do continually amaze me soooo..... I guess I am not surprised.

Obama doesn't have a plan. He speaks almost daily about this magical health care scenario, but there isn't an "Obama plan." It's jsut a wish list of all the things his supporters want to hear. The bill will be loaded down with all the other garbage the legislators can throw in to drive the price up and benefit themselves.

The entire situation has become so divided and political it's a joke.

Obama does have a plan in that he will only sign a bill that meets what he wants to see in it. It must reduce health care cost to average Americans. It cannot increase the debt. Insurance companies must be reformed and cannot continue denial of claims on things like preexisting conditions.

Obama also said he wouldn't sign legislation loaded with earmarks. He also said that if the stimulus bill was passed immediately that unemployment wouldn't rise above 8%. He also said that if you want to understand his policies, look at who he surrounds himself with in the White House. And you still trust this guy?

You point out exactly why the fiscal conservatives have such an issue with Obama's plan. Any average, common sense American knows that you cannot possibly extend health care coverage to an additional 47 million people (or whatever the fabricated number is this week) and reduce costs. IT CANNOT HAPPEN. That's is where Obama is lying and you cannot honestly deny that. The only way to reduce costs is to reduce care (ration) or reduce wages to those employed in the system (redistribution of wealth).

Sounds a little far fetched and socialism-esque to me.

If you listen to Obama speak about how he'll revamp the current corrupt system and pay for 2/3s of the cost of the new plan with reform alone and pay for the other 1/3 with taxes to the rich, you'll see how reasonable it all sounds. Yeah I trust him way more than any wing nut who cries socialism and Hitler. You have absolutely no credibility with anyone except for a few toothless Appalachian hillbillies of no consequence.

Not only does he makes sense. but his supporters are doctors and people of intelligence around the country. Obama's only misgiving is his persistence upon compromise with Republicans, who have no plan. thinking people can see that a single payer system would be best, and has proven to be so in countries around the world.

Um, yes you can. European countries have been providing full health care coverage to their citizens at a reduced cost per person than we have here in the United States for decades. It has nothing to do with reducing needed care or reducing wages. It has to do with reducing spending on frivolous crap that people don't really need, avoiding overly expensive treatment that is no more effective that a cheaper one, and practicing preventive medicine.

There have been hundreds of plans and amendments proposed by Republicans that have been flat out swept off the table by Democrats. Sounds like someone needs to do a little homework before opening their mouth. The 2/3 portion you're talking about comes from $500 billion in cuts from Medicare. You're telling me that care won't be compromised coverage to achieve that type of savings? You're telling me that the same adminstration who screwed up the stimulus bill and cash for clunkers should be trusted to all the sudden become efficient and reduce waste? Please... Quit believing everything Obama says and be a responsible, self-informing citizen who responds on fact, not pure emotion.

      Varex...
Compare the healthcare available to Americans to the healthcare available to the Europeans you're referring to, and tell me who has a better sytem. I'm not disagreeing that insurance reform is necessary, but a government take over is the last thing Americans should want after seeing how inefficiently they run everything else.

      bc...
The protests are against a government take over and a radical agenda. They are against what Obama says he wants to do with healthcare and has already done with banks, autos, etc. You don't need a specific plan to protest his beliefs.

Who has the better system? I'd say that many of the countries with universal health care have a better health care system than we do. Not only do people who live in countries with universal health care pay less than we do, and yes that includes the taxes that fund it, but they don't get stuck with outrageous hospital bills because their insurance didn't mesh with the hospital they went to when they got into a car accident.

Reason why I asked what one can say about him that wouldn't get that kind of comment.

Of course generic responses of "be factual" came up. But then they'd tack on a nonfactual slight against a political side they don't like.

Which just goes to show there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats. They are like that one episode of the Original Star Trek Series where the black and white faced aliens were fighting against the white and black face aliens just because they did not look the same.

The ability to protest in the United States is a freedom. Protesting in itself is not. And protesting something because people are scared of it because they do not understand it is stupid. Many of these people have little or no clue what they truly are protesting, they are just following mindless political habit. Betsy McCaughey showed that she was an idiot and a lair about a subject that she had been against for years on a comedy talk show. Sure, it was and is her right to choose to protest it, but that doesn't make her any smarter or less of an idiot.
