Jack Herer in critical condition

From a Norml Facebook Update:

#NORML BREAKING NEWS @JackHerer taken from backstage at Portland Hempstalk by ambulance to hospital, suffered collapse, cause unknown.

Jack Herer (born June 18, 1939) is an American political activist and the author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes (ISBN 0-9524560-0-1) (1985), a book which has been used in efforts to decriminalize cannabis and is considered by many to be the Bible for marijuana and hemp enthusiast which he offers online for FREE at his website Jackherer.com.

A former Goldwater Republican, Herer is now a pro-marijuana and hemp activist. He has written two books, the aforementioned The Emperor Wears No Clothes and Grass. There has also been a documentary made about his life called, The Emperor of Hemp. He believes that the hemp plant should be decriminalized because it has been shown to be a renewable source of fuel, food, and medicine, and can be grown in virtually any part of the world, and that the U.S. government deliberately hides the proof of this. He has devoted his life to the support of cannabis, hemp and marijuana.

Jack Herer also gave his name to a specific strain of cannabis (which StrainReview noted for its great medicinal properties.)

Herer ran for United States President twice, in 1988 (1,949 votes) and 1992 (3,875 votes) as the Grassroots Party candidate.

In July 2000, Herer suffered a minor heart attack and a major stroke, resulting in difficulties speaking and moving the right side of his body.[2] Herer mostly recovered, and claimed in May 2004 that treatment with the psychoactive mushroom amanita muscaria was the secret.[3] (from Wikipedia)

Jack Herer is also a major source of information on Current and an inspiration for myself and others through his selfless activism. I can think of few people that have done more for the cause of marijuana legalization then Jack Herer. I speak for all marijuana law reformers when I say this, "Jack, we hope you recover and we appreciate your efforts."

    • An update from a web blog on 9/17:

UPDATE (17/09/09): Jack has been taken off of the medications that were keeping him in a state of induced coma. He is not awake yet and the doctors are saying that it may be a few days before …he comes out of the coma. Jack swallowed some fluid into his lung’s during the heart – attack and this caused a minor infection. He is considered stable at this time just in a comatose state.

Good luck Jack – we’re all rooting for you friend!

    • My heart goes out to him. I hope that Jack fully recovers and begins to do the work he loves: advocating marijuana use for both medicinal and recreational purposes.

      Hang in there, Jack.

    • If Mr. Herer (Jack) had had my health tonic he would have recovered from both the stroke AND the heart attack => http://current.com/items/90879038_prospectors-health-tonic-tricks-they-didnt-hav... and FASTER. While the ingredients I use are not hallucinatory, if you drank enough of it I think it could be.

It's a recipe to be made at home so here's the deal => you can add any ingredients ya want. So let's say in the next year or so the Obama Administration was to legalize small amounts of marijuana across-the-board use to the full American population eh? OKAY, so you could sprinkle a small amount of whatever hallucinatory-inducing plant or herbs into the homemade tonic to give you the boost you desire.

A lot like making homemade gasoline or wine. Once the small amounts is made legal whew, be one whale of a tonic then, and then the world will hail me as the new guru on the block.

Sorry Jack but it happens. We all get replaced sooner or later.

    • A Salute to the Smoke Out

I say we use today to smoke in Jacks name; 'SMOKE OUT'; to the man that has changed many ideas about weed.

Jack Herer is one man that has tried to show the world how 'weed' can benefit humanity. He is a true hero to me and many around the world.

A clear consciences is a sign of a bad memory, you the man Jack!

Am packing my bong now. To Jack , many pleasant days and warm smiles ahead , ur luved man!

    • Best wishes for a speedy recovery here too Jack.

But we need to give the man a break here though. Jack is no longer a spring chicken. I'm one of those. You start getting old and stuff just starts wearing out. Things like this can happen to an active man.

On the other hand he's not at deaths door yet either; or not that I've leard. The doc's will isolate what caused this and most likely Jack will have to make some lifestyle adjustments. Hopefully. Leave us not act as if the world is ending. At least until we find out for sure it is.

Get well Jack. Hang in there.

    • Sad news. Hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.

On a side note it is interesting to see how diverse the people are on this site that are pro-legalization. Makes me really believe that most people are pro-legalization nowadays and hopefully Mr. Herer will be around to see his dream come to fruition.

    • I am 54 years old and have very few hero's. Jack Herer is one of my true hero's. After I read his book "The Emperor Wears No Clothes", my life changed. I didn't feel like a criminal anymore. I knew the facts, which had been hidden. Cannabis has history. Our own government and politicians were hiding facts, while waging war on ordinary Americans for political gain. They used a war on American soil to gain votes.

Our government can hide history, but they can't change it. It's time to accept and acknowledge the history of cannabis. It's time to stop misleading ordinary Americans with the use of spin and disinformation.

Jack Herer has been a light out of the darkness for many. I am not, was not and never should be considered criminal for smoking cannabis. Those who lie and distort should not only be criminal, they should feel shame for knowing the facts, yet supporting a war on American soil, based on fixed facts, lies and distortion. Shame on every politician who chooses to spin a war based on false facts.

    • I had my high times phase and I bought grow books and anything related to marijuana. I actually bought Jack's book.(Had no idea it was Jack's book, until reading this article) I smoked marijuana for more than half my current life. I've seen first hand, the actions and behaviors associated to marijuana use. That phase has passed and now I'm one of those people that are against weed legalization, but I wish Jack well.

You try to take my weed and see what happens. Maybe I want to make your coffee illegal. Screw you man.
I really hate you and everyone like you. I think you should be locked up just for thinking you could tell me what to do through legislation. How do you like that?

You must be very young, Ish05. My many friends and I have been smoking cannabis for over 40 years. We've become successful doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists, musicians, artists, surgeons, editors, authors, teachers, politicians, etc., and we still use it and are fully for the legalization of cannabis.

Been using Cannabis for over 40 years here and it has not put a dent in productivity.

I used it all through my college years and still got a 3.85 grade point average.

From personal experience, I can tell you that it is not something you should be against.

Why are you so against it? What is your logic with regard to keeping it criminal?

    • After giving an empassioned and well received speech on the virtues of hemp and cannabis, Jack was sitting down taking a breather when the heart attack struck.

A paramedic emergency crew was called and medical staff who were onsite at Kelly Point Park made Jack as comfortable as they could until the paramedics arrived.

Whilst the bands played on and the boisterous crowd cheered the guest speakers, little did they know that only a few hundred feet from where they were enjoying the Hempstalk proceedings, the man many people had travelled thousands of miles to hear speak, was fighting for his life.

The paramedic team stabilized Jack as best they could then quickly transported him by ambulance, to the Emanuel Trauma Center in Portland.

Jack's condition was said to be 'critical' as he arrived at the medical facility with his son at his side. The diagnoses of a heart attack was confirmed soon after and Jack was taken straight to the operating theatre for life-saving surgery.

Our thoughts are with Jacks wife Jeannie, and we pray for a full and speedy recovery for a man who is beyond legendary with a cannabis and hemp community which spans the globe.

You Tube is becoming a bunch of fuddy duddies with their "video embedding not allowed" crap.

What is with them? Ahhh I get it they want people to go to their site and not treat them as just a video host. They want people to get sucked into the youtube vortex.

    • Vierotchka:

Jubal, it is not YouTube's decision - when you upload a video, you can choose to disable embedding. You can also edit a video and change from allowing to disabling embedding. You can also choose to delete a video. Sometimes, YouTube deletes it or disables the sound if your video breaches copyright laws and someone has flagged that video to bring it to YouTube's staff's attention.

    • Jack, you are in my prayers. Few people have affected my life as much as Jack Herer.

Back in the late 80's I saw him on a local show in Cleveland, 'The Morning Exchange'. The things he stated, I had never heard before. Those facts had been removed from educational material.

Jack Herer had written a book, complete with facts and the documentation to back it up. Profound! I wasn't a criminal because I liked cannabis. I was a criminal due to lies and disinformation.

After reading his book cover to cover, I was sure things would change. People would find out the facts. Sadly, it didn't matter facts be damned. The powers that be control the press. Facts are still hidden from the masses. Ordinary Americans are still lied to daily. That's just sad!

Jack has done more than any other American, trying to save the planet using a plant which has been around for thousands of years. Facts may be hidden from the masses, but that doesn't make them untrue, just hidden from view.

Jack Herer - a TRUE American Hero! Someday ordinary Americans will realize how hard he tried to provide the facts necessary to make an educated decisions about a plant, put on earth by God for a reason. In facts many, many reasons! Cannabis hemp has history! Cannabis hemp should not be illegal, it should be used to make the world a better place. Facts matter! Jack Herer matters! God Bless Jack Herer and his wonderful wife.

After watching The Emperor of Hemp, it feels as if my mind ha been expanded. When I first joined current and noticed the multiple postings by this kid (I thought) that's cool, a fellow toker that takes legalization as an issue. Now that I have gained a modicum of knowledge about this man and his untiring efforts, it restores a little faith in human nature. He is one of the people that has inspired me to kick my activism efforts up to the next level, although small in comparison. Times like this make me miss the days of my religious upbringing. I am an agnostic but I'm thankful that you can pray for him Connie.

Why do you have to be sick to smoke cannabis?? Why is it that for the past 39 years it has been "wrong" to get "intoxicated" or "high" on any other substance than alcohol or tobacco, when we have scientific evidence that almost every single culture from around the world has used some form of "intoxicant" in a positive, healing way dating way back to the hunter/gatherer period. Not to mention the ancient recreational use of cannabis itself with no documented death in a 100,000 year record of use. Prohibition does not work!! I would much rather have a society full of stoners than of "compassionate conservatives" trying to "save" us from the so called drug scourge. Maybe you should read the emperor wears no clothes acontradiction. oh. and by the way it sounds like you are the one with a closed mind. Have fun hatin if thats what gets you off.

@acuntredicktion; I have a GOD given right to smoke Marijuana just as everyone else does...

      Genesis;
And God said, Behold, I have given you EVERY HERB bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
1:30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given EVERY GREEN HERB for meat: and it was so.

That's from the same "conservative" bible everyone else reads.

And as far as it saying for "meat": Matt 4:4;"It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Thus referring to a "spiritual nourishment", So that certainly says that there are multiple meanings for food, and ways to feed your soul....

Now why don't you do you're cruel heart and soul a favor and treat it to some GREEN HERB, and quit knocking people for spiritual and or religious beliefs; especially those that do not infringe upon your own rights.....

Correction Spacemikey is in order. You are quoting Genesis 1:30 scripture from BEFORE man sinned... so you SINNERS ALL BORN AS ADAM'S SIN-INHERITING CHILDREN have to do without because you're GREEDY.

You have to cultivate it for Rich folk & doctors but YOU CAN"T HAVE IT. Cut & Dry, move on, next thread plz.

@Gravity_Man... I hope that's sarcasm..."You have to cultivate it for Rich folk & doctors but YOU CAN"T HAVE IT. Cut & Dry, move on, next thread plz."

I never said I cultivated anything (on any post), nor will I ever be forced to cultivate anything for anyone...

As far as myself being greedy, that's not even a hypothesis (see those are EDUCATED guesses, and you don't know enough to study me); so you're wrong.... ask someone who knows or troll elsewhere....

Yeah that was before the creation of Adam. And does say that life would be harder after expulsion from the garden, etc..

But it never goes on to say that now because Adam sinned, I can't have herb.....

I'm sorry your theology has left you looking at things that way. I'm even more sorry if you've called me way off topic over sarcasm.

The war on drugs is over, DRUGS WIN!!! More importantly the people have long since won the right to do with there bodies as they see fit.

Anyway the article is about a wonderful person/crusader for a wonderful plant/cause, and the rights of people. I think a few have done him a disservice by allowing such petty crap enter into a thread about a great person, who advocates a plant that is truly marvelous... Nobody can deny the facts, and practicalities of hemp, or even marijuana at this point. And any body who denies the truth on this matter after seeing the facts, needs their head examined seriously....

      Get well Jack...
