The Constitution Is No Better Than the Bible

Just some random guy's blog about some people's unfortunate tendencies to attempt use "the constitution says so" as a basis for a logical argument. Personally, I think the constitution and the Bible are both socially irrelevant. There are a couple of good points here and there, however selective quoting and blind subordination have elevated the status of both documents to such an extreme that they have begun to supplant common sense in many communities. I'm all for using historical documents to enhance one's understanding of the world so long as one is willing to take the time to fully understand the nature of the document in terms of the time period during which it was written, the background of the author(s), any unauthorized editing, etc. Nowadays, far too many people argue like little school children, who know nothing more than the bill of rights and a couple amendments, struggling to get their way while "discussing" issues with people who believe that there are a couple other documents worth taking into consideration

    • How is the bible socially irrelevant? It was biblical principles that were the foundation of our laws. I see no humanists feeding the poor or sheltering the homeless. Without these biblical laws, we would have no laws against usury, bearing false witness, murder, among others. Civilization would indeed be brutal, and life would be short if we lived only with our base instincts, and had no moral foundations.

christianity does not have a monopoly on charity or compassion and to think so is amazingly myopic.

if you see no humanist helping the poor, you aren't looking very hard. go to a progressive city like portland or seattle and you'll meet plenty.

if the laws of the bible are so important, why are most of the 10 commandments about idol worship, angry gods, and what days to rest?

the capacity for goodwill and compassion reside in us all, regardless of what inspires it

ancient greco-roman ideals are the basis for most of our laws
all religions have rules of sorts, and they are mostly common. Not stealing, murdering, and even helping the poor, they are all needed for a stable society and thus organized religion too

    • I'm glad that people are talking about this. The bible is used most of the time as a weapon or to enslave people. It does however just like our constitution hold certain truths but has a whole should not be used to create law. I hope that more information will come out about both docs so people can evolve and know that we are one.

    • The good parts of those are just plagarisms from the self evident truths in the human heart.

You can wipe your ass with a bible or a constitution, koran or whatever, what is in your heart can not be amended. :)

    • I think the US Constitution is superior to the Bible.

The Bible is a collection of fictions used to enslave men and women for 1,000's of years.

The US Constitution is perhaps the finest political document ever conceived or written. It stands as symbol and testimony for good triumphing over evil; for freedom and self determination, for every thing good, true and noble.
