Yemeni girl, 12, dies in painful childbirth

A 12-year-old Yemeni girl, who was forced into marriage, died during a painful childbirth that also killed her baby, a children's rights group said Monday.
Fawziya Ammodi struggled for three days in labor, before dying of severe bleeding at a hospital on Friday, said the Seyaj Organization for the Protection of Children.

"Although the cause of her death was lack of medical care, the real case was the lack of education in Yemen and the fact that child marriages keep happening," said Seyaj President Ahmed al-Qureshi.

Born into an impoverished family in Hodeidah, Fawziya was forced to drop out of school and married off to a 24-year-old man last year, al-Qureshi said.

Child brides are commonplace in Yemen, especially in the Red Sea Coast where tribal customs hold sway. Hodeidah is the fourth largest city in Yemen and an important port.

More than half of all young Yemeni girls are married off before the age of 18 -- many times to older men, some with more than one wife, a study by Sanaa University found.
While it was not immediately known why Fawziya's parents married her off, the reasons vary. Sometimes, financially-strapped parents offer up their daughters for hefty dowries.

Marriage means the girls are no longer a financial or moral burden to their parents. And often, parents will extract a promise from the husband to wait until the girl is older to consummate the marriage.

The issue of Yemeni child brides came to the forefront in 2008 with 10-year-old Nujood Ali.

She was pulled out of school and married to a man who beat and raped her within weeks of the ceremony.

To escape, Nujood hailed a taxi -- the first time in her life -- to get across town to the central courthouse where she sat on a bench and demanded to see a judge.

After a well-publicized trial, she was granted a divorce.

The Yemeni parliament tried in February to pass a law, setting the minimum marriage age at 17. But the measure has not reached the president because many parliamentarians argued it violates sharia, or Islamic law, which does not stipulate a minimum age.

    • Islam teaches you to cherish your women and children, and respecting them would NOT violate Sharia. Articles posed like this con volute the truth and make Islam the enemy because of things that are not Muslim characteristics. I feel terrible for these children and for the families that feel like they have to put their children through this. But nothing will happen if the men are never charged, and creating a law would be the first step, enacting would be a second. At least they are considering it, which IS progress.

    • I have a really novel idea! Let's leave. It's so simple, get out of the Middle East.
They have been doing what they do for thousands of years and very obviously don't want to change from what they know works to ideas that must seem stupid to them.
These guys are NOT breaking any laws and I half suspect little boys get the same treatment as little girls but we don't hear about it.
Would we care if it weren't for their oil? Jimmy Carter started us down the road to energy independence in the 70's but he got politically destroyed and so did energy reform. Maybe now might be a good time to rethink alternate energy and lots of conservation.
Then again, what the hell do I know?

Poor ol' Carter. If only Reagan kept some of his policies instead of tossing out everything Carter did.
But, hey, you know how Republicans are: They see nothing good in what Democrats do, ever.
Anyhoo, I've always said the same: The US should get out of the Middle East, especially Afghanistan, and let them rot in their own excrement.
It sure doesn't help agonize about 10 year old wives and women not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia.
Who cares what they do to themselves. The oil is going to flow out regardless.

They're still after him because he is still active in the Mid-East and speaks his mind. The Israelis are not treating the Palestinians in anything like a humane manner. Pres. Carter has had some things to say about that.
And before anybody accuses me of anti-semitism or anti-Israel, they both suck.

    • As it's been since the dawn of time in mant cultures, girls are here for the pleasure of men, to be used in any way without regard for their well being. Some things never change...

What kind of man pleasures himself with a child? Only the worst kind...........

I'm sickened and saddened beyond belief...

Poor little child. And the man probably doesn't even see what he's done, just considers it his right.....

    • The poverty here is the poverty of human rights for women and female children. The Amin's control the laws and who gets the wealth. These countries rake in large amounts of money for their resourse sales which could and should be used to better the peoples lives but the religious leaders want to stay in the dark ages of human rights because when everyone can rightfully choose progress it will end the life style the Amins want to keep.

    • Don't use this as another excuse to hate Muslims. In many conservative cultures, a girl is considered marriagable when she reaches puberty. This is tragic, but it's almost entirely exclusive to conservative areas like Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and so on. There are 1.3 Billion Muslims worldwide, as I've said time and time again, and most of them do not marry twelve year olds.

    • So very many of us are totally outraged by this terribly tragic story. Will we keep our mouths shut because of "polically correct" language and writing?
However, how many have the guts to see into this and realize that this unfortunate horror story is DIRECTLY connected to culture, a certain religious practrice and ignorance. How many in this world suffer from poverty and yet they do not die while giving birth at age 12? ......Billions.
There is no one named "poverty." This is not poverty's fault.
Most of us know exactly, yes, EXACTLY why this happened.

    • Yemen is Al-Qaeda central, too. It’s the same place to which we’ve released former Gitmo terrorists. Yes, it’s paradise for them: 11-year-old brides, 12-year-old mothers of their children, and all the Al-Qaeda brothers you’d ever want to know.

Yup, this is the “peacefulness” of the “Religion of Peace” we keep hearing about. It’s also the “modesty” that Muslims claim they require above all other religions. . . all other religions that don’t force girls to be married at age eight and moths at age eleven.

    • Why did her Catholic priest allow this?
Why did her pastor allow this?
Why did her rabbi allow this?
Why did her monk allow this?
Why did her guru allow this?
WHY DID HER IMAM ALLOW THIS?
So, jh64487, why did the Zionists do this to her?
Why did the Jews do this to her?
bin laden, hero of humanity just said yesterday that everything is because of the Jews.
Surely you are not against bin laden, humanity's gift from ala?
Could this possibly have to do with, pedophilia?
Is there a culture which allows and even encourages pedophilia?
      Huh?

      You're preaching to the choir.
Poverty is the condition within the environment that allows such actions.
Most of mankind had no problem with this through most of our recorded history. I think it was 1400? 1500? that European royalty were urged to abstain with their occasionally infant/child brides until they reached the ripe old age of 12.

    • Abraham99:

The thought of an old man becoming aroused by a child is one of the most disturbing thoughts that makes us cringe as it reminds us of pedophilia and the most despicable people. It is difficult to accept that the Holy Prophet married Aisha when she was 6-years-old and consummated his marriage with her when she was 9. He was then, 54 years old.

Sahih Muslim Book 008, Number 3310:
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported: Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) married me when I was six years old, and I was admitted to his house when I was nine years old.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64
      Narrated 'Aisha:
that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).

Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 62, Number 65
      Narrated 'Aisha:
that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old. Hisham said: I have been informed that 'Aisha remained with the Prophet for nine years (i.e. till his death)." what you know of the Quran (by heart)'

Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, Book 62, Number 88
      Narrated 'Ursa:
The Prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with 'Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death).

    • Wouldn't it be interesting if Mormons had their own country? It'd be polygamy galore, and I doubt they've have a minimum age.
Or how about if Jehova Witnesses had their own country? Every girl caught having sex before marriage forced to testify in front of a panel of elders who'd like to hear every detail of what she did with her male partner.
(Would a gay country stand for heterosexual marriages or settle for heterosexual civil unions?)
All kidding aside, what happened in Yemen is straight out pedophilia.
But these folks have this attitude of "If the West doesn't like what we're doing then it must be a good thing."
What a bunch of nincompoops, I swear.

    • WOW!!! Welcome to the rest of the world. From the tone of the outrage I must believe this is the 1st some of you have heard of this.
Anybody know about when Western society decided against child brides? The legal marriageable age in some Southern states is what?
Anybody wonder how old Mary was when she had Jesus? Was the Holy Ghost a pedophile?
Some African societies still perform clitorectomies on their kids, believe aids can be cured by sex with a virgin and that condoms are a Democratic plot.
Some Americans don't want us to help other countries with information or birth control except abstinence. They don't seem to give 2 shits about the consequences, like this story. Would anybody care if the girl had survived?
Is anyone aware that girls are not valued in poor countries?
      I just wondered.

@bielski, actually, it does but not just poverty which is a breeding ground for all that a modern, moral society must abhor.
Children are a resource in poor countries and male children are considered harder workers and better fighters.
Education and subsequent wealth are twin providers of opportunity and social progress. Many of those in power do not want this progress/change which brings questioning of their authority.

    • Said one doctor: "The case of Fawziya illustrates the tragedy of those whom we call 'the brides of death', who are little girls...."

That makes Muhammad's wife Aisha one of those "brides of death" herself. And he set the disastrous precedent -- as a "beautiful pattern of conduct," per Qur'an 33:21 -- that leads to cases like this. That is the ultimate reason that child marriage has persisted so stubbornly across the Islamic world.

    • Even though Yemen has elected officials the laws of the land are Sharia and therefore made by the male dominant religion and the male religious leaders.
Women are property to do with as the husband pleases.
It amazes me that this child was eventually taken to the hospital, most likely because the husband wanted to save the baby not the expendable, easily replaceable young wife......
Such a sad situation, to feel her life is worth very little and her husband is the almighty man and worth so much more than her.
Native American Shawnee's revere their women because they make and bring forth new life.....

I hope and pray for the eyes of the government to be opened so that they can see that things need to change. Children should be allowed to be children. :(

It's not fair that the governing body of the country thinks that upholding an ancient and fucking irrational religious law is more important than establishing a minimum age of marriage to prevent rape and essential murder such as cases like these.

But the only ones who can change it completely is themselves! But those type of people are never willing to compromise.

If a 12 year old girl wants to have sex, not saying this one in particular did, and wants to have children, to honor her family, would that be morally unjust, HP?

Sort of like wearing a head covering in the middle east. The Americans find it demeaning. While some girls in the middle east find is demeaning as well, others find it empowering. Where do..."certain standards" stop?

    • BridgetAnne1:

Wearing a head covering is not the same as a child bride who is barely pubescent being forced into a marriage. She was a child and unable to make a decision about her own life and because of that, it ended prematurely. The reason why is it illegal to sex with children is because a child does not have the experience to make an informed decision, no matter how much that child may think he/she can.

This is slavery, plain and simple. The fact that is perpertrated on a child makes it all the more heinous.

Kitten eater, this child was not old enough to have sex or to deliver a baby. They let her suffer for three long arduous days in labor before they took her to the hospital. If they could have done a c-section on the first day she and the baby may have lived. Her pelvis wasn't large enough to allow the delivery of a human head.
How many other 10, 11 or younger girls die in seclusion while in unproductive labor, because the babies head won't fit through the child immature pelvis???

    • Yemen is a part of the United Nations. This is where the UN needs to draw the line and step in, because obviously young girls (even ten years old?! come the fuck on) do not have the maturity to successfully marry and start a family. Most girls that age don't even menstruate! On the other hand, how can a grown man beat a mere child? I cannot believe that modern science and medicine have not even shadowed these people's mind with some kind of thought like, "hey, this kid was in diapers when I was a teenager. I probably shouldn't impregnate her." And shame on the parents for wanting to get rid of their child. If you can't handle a child, don't have one. Disgusting.

    • This story makes me cry. There is a time in a woman's life when she is ready to have children, but that age is not 10 or 12. Those girls deserved a better life, not one that ended too soon in childbirth when they themselves were still children. I understand the issue between shari'a and contemporary standards for age at marriage, but I can still cry on their behalf and wish that other young girls are saved from their fate.

So you actually blame these two deaths on poverty?
But you do not blame it on the fact that she was impregnated at age eleven?
Wow! Poverty has been running around and screwing 11 year olds. Poverty also has been sexually abusing children.

Poverty has been making people murder "others" because those "others" refused to convert.
yeah, poverty is really an evil man.
Did you, JH64487, ever wonder why poverty exists in Yemen and in countries just like it?
Well, here are the 50 poorest countries in the world, while they all remain stagnant, unproductive, unsupportive of their citizens, and all allow their life expectancy to be far below average, and all allow child marriages. But you think it's poverty?

Here are the 50 poorest nations on Earth.....
Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kiribati, Laos, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Samoa, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Sudan, East Timor, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Tanzania, Vanuatu, Yemen, Zambia.

Well JH64487, have you found anything interesting in the "coincidence" of their common beliefs?
Have their religious leaders allowed and even encouraged child marriages???!!!
Do you, jh64487, think these two deaths are only related to poverty?
      How about ignorance?
      How about lack of education?
Why are their leaders not helping the populace?
How about lack of skills, or lack of knowledge, or lack of guidance?
You actually believe that they died because they were poor and not because of their archaic culture?
How many people have you ever met, known, or even heard of, who died while giving birth at age 12?
Hopefully you realize that poverty did not begin and end in Yemen, (where terrorism abounds).
Why is terrorism so much encouraged in Yemen?
How could this man have been allowed to marry a girl at such a young age without being arrested?
Could it be that their culture and law allow that to happen legally in that country, and in others like it?
      Poverty???
