Helicopter-borne US special forces carried out a revenge raid in Somalia that killed a top al-Qaida commander high on the FBI's most wanted terrorist list, US officials in Washington said last night.

Saleh Ali Nabhan, 28, a leader of al-Shabab, a group closely linked to al-Qaida, was alleged to have been involved in the bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 that killed 229 people. He is also accused of involvement in attacks in 2002 on a hotel in Mombasa, Kenya, popular with Israelis, in which 15 people died, and a botched missile attack on a plane carrying tourists from Mombasa to Israel.

A US official said two men travelling in a car in Somalia were killed when helicopters opened fire yesterday, and two others were wounded and captured. Another official said it was most likely that Nabhan, who had been on the FBI wanted list for several years, had been killed.

Witnesses on the ground said military helicopters strafed a car carrying Nabhan, killing some passengers and wounding others, south of Mogadishu. The helicopters landed and took the wounded men, and possibly Nabhan's body, with them, witnesses said.

    • "He died peacefully in his sleep......" Ha!Ha! They didn't want to use Tomahawk missiles. because there probably would have been civilian casualties. They used (in all probability) a Cobra helicopter gunship. Helicopter use was mentioned- these Cobras have Gatling guns- with huge bullets- and this fellow deserved every one of them! Good riddance!

    • Maybe if we decapitate him and show the video on TV in Afghanistan, democrats in this country will come to our aid instead of theirs.

    • What everyone wrote here surprises me...

About the pattern developing here, go find out how much money the US sends to Lebanon, Gaza, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and oh yes Iran through private energy investments. I bet its more than you would think.

Someone asked what were we doing in Somalia, getting the people who wanted to do worse things to us.

US Marshal code: LET NO GUILTY MAN GO FREE!

I read this article and smile. Good riddance, another one bites the dust. You don't kill hundreds and feel safe, not when your messing with US

When every there's a problem and a large group of multi-national dignitaries get together they decide something must be done to stop it and when asked who will do the job and pay for it, too: all heads turn to USA to police the world. And like do do birds we continue to fight every ones battles that the UN picks.

Since it's beginning we have funded the UN more money than any other country. Usually more than 30% of it's total budget. While Clinton was president he vowed to decrease our contributions to no more than twenty percent of their budget but we continued to supply more than 30% of their budget. This year 2009 we have so far donated only 22% of their budget.
Here are all the counties (192 all together belong) in 2009 that donated 1% or more of the total budget compared to our contributions.
      a) Australia ............................................... 1.8 %
      b) Belgium.................................................. 1 %
      c) Canada.................................................. 3 %
      d) China..................................................... 2.7 %
      e) France................................................... 6 %
      f) Germany................................................. 8.5 %
      g) Italy........................................................ 5%
      h) Japan....................................................16.6 %
      i) Mexico..................................................... 2.26 %
      j) Netherlands.............................................1.87 %
      k)Republic of Korea...................................2 %
      l) Spain.......................................................3 %
      m) Switzerland............................................1 %
      n) Sweden..................................................1 %
      o) USA.......................................................22 %
Just to give you more perspective: Dubai ....................................................... >1 %
      Saudi Arabia.................................................0.75%
Norway..........................................................0.78 % We have had troops involved in 7- 8 missions of the United Nations every year. Most notably in Yugoslavia, Croatia and Serbia.Do you want me to name more?
The recent debates in this country are to decrease our funding with the UN because their missions have been repeatedly failures, (as well as UN's links to corruption.)
And this is only what we have done for the world through the United Nations.

The US military is EVERYWHERE. We control the worlds oceans with the worlds most powerful fleets and dominate the skies with advanced air craft. We have god knows how many satellites tracking the globe. So why cant we find Bin Laden. Is it really that hard? Or maybe he isnt meant to be found...

If he's hiding in a cave like most people think, and he probably is, he can't be seen by a satellite.

Plus the expanse of land in which he could be hiding is so huge and unforgiving, theres going to be a lot of tunnel hide-and-seek going on.

    • how many americans have been killed ?

      Year US UK Other Total
      2003 486 53 41 580
      2004 849 22 35 906
      2005 846 23 28 897

      2009 123 1 0 124
      Total 4344 179 139 4662

how many non americans have been killed ?
The invasion of Iraq led to an occupation and the eventual capture of President Hussein, who was later executed by the new Iraqi government. Violence against coalition forces and among various sectarian groups soon led to the Iraqi insurgency, strife between many Sunni and Shia Iraqi groups, and al-Qaeda operations in Iraq.[62][63] The number of Iraqis killed through 2007 ranges from "a conservative cautious minimum" of more than 85,000 civilians[64][65] to a survey estimate of more than 1,000,000 people.[28]

i guess what im wondering is how many people do we have to kill to win a war ?

      isnt that a 200 to 1 ratio ?
