What do you think about the Patriot Act? Should it be extended for our safety, or should we regain these rights after years of no attacks on U.S. soil?

No excuse for this... it's like spitting in the face of all those who hated Bush for pushing the Patriot Act down our throats.
Either write letters, sign a petition, or do SOMETHING to voice your disapproval of this...

You really have no idea what you're talking about. We can all agree that the extending of the Patriot Act is a bad thing, obviously. However, let's not jump to conclusions that you really have no way of verifying. And before you respond with more ignorance, please provide some proof backing up any of your claims so we can have a legitimate conversation.

Okay, admittedly I jumped to a pretty big conclusion, but you have to admit that this seriously backs up what i said.
Obama, in is own way, is continuing most of the bad policies that Bush started.
The Patriot Act be a prime, forward example of that.
Not to mention the wars in Iraq in Afghanistan and many other policies to numerous to name. Please, understand that there is no difference between Obama and Bush. There is no left or right, they are the same thing, with the same agenda. Of course, to the public, it seems they are different, but they want to accomplish the same devious goals, only taking seemingly different routes to get there.
The only reason I was so quick, and so loud, to say that Obama is no better than Bush is because this proves that almost beyond any reasonable doubt.
Along with the fact that I have been saying so since he was elected. I would have said the same if McCain or Hillary or any other Repubacrat or Demican was elected. We have voted for the same candy, just a different wrapper, so to speak.

This is definitely troubling. The Patriot Act is the worse kind of reactionary policy cooked up by Bush's administration. While I want to believe that necessary steps will be taken, as the article mentions, to protect the privacy of citizens, I am not hopeful. This is definitely one particular point of Obama's administration that I am not in agreement with... at all.

When the Patriot Act was Bush's baby, it was nothing but howls of outrage from the Left. Now that the baby was handed off to Obama and he's feeding the damned thing, what do you hear from the Left? Deafening silence. After all, Obama is The Man Who Can Do No Wrong. Obama is driving us off a cliff, and you're all asleep in the back seat!

Well Obama didn't halt the recession. He said if he didn't pass a stimulus, unemployment could reach as high as 9% (that's long gone), he said he was against the way (but wants 20-40,000 more troops in Afghanistan), he said he would get us health care, shut down torture camps, the list goes on. As long as any provisions of the Patriot Act remain law the constitutional rights of every American remain at risk! Don't be lulled by the elite to believe that the aim of civil rights legislation, and the aim of the constitution, can be protected while providing safety from terrorists can be insured, because it can't! have you ever read the Patriot Act jh64487?

business record provision used 220 times during 04-07, roving wiretaps provision 22 times a year.
Those numbers don't really seem that high to me. Sure they shouldn't be doing it at all, but it seems like they're doing it when they deem necessary rather than arbitrarily. do you think there could be more that they're not telling us about, or other domestic spying operations that don't fall under whats being talked about in this article? - 2 years ago

on the other hand, this is ONE aspect of what he's doing whereas this (and the NCLB Act, also a failure) was ALL bush gave us.
perspective people. and finish reading more than the title.
"Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich wrote Sen. Patrick Leahy, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, that the administration is willing to consider stronger civil rights protections in the new law "provided that they do not undermine the effectiveness of these important (provisions)."
Leahy responded with a statement saying it is important for the administration and Congress to "work together to ensure that we protect both our national security and our civil liberties."
The committee has scheduled a hearing next week on the Patriot Act.
From 2004 to 2007, the business records provision was used 220 times, officials said. Most often, the business records were requested in combination with requests for phone records.
Roving wiretaps
The lone wolf provision was created to conduct surveillance on suspects with no known link to foreign governments or terrorist groups. It has never been used, but the administration says it should still be available for future investigations. The roving wiretaps provision was designed to allow investigators to quickly monitor the communications of a suspects who change their cell phone or communication device, without investigators having to go back to court for a new court authorization. That provision has been used an average of 22 times a year, officials said.
Michelle Richardson of the American Civil Liberties Union called the administration's position "a mixed bag," and said that the group hopes the next version of the Patriot Act will have important safeguards on other issues, particularly the collecting of international communications, and a specific bar on surveillance of activities protected by the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment such as peaceful protests or religious assembly.
"We're heartened they're saying they're willing to work with Congress," Richardson said, adding that is "definitely a sea change from what we've seen in the past."

I can't believe he is supporting the extension of this. Well, part of me does. I am saddened by this and disappointed. *sigh*
This is not protecting American people but instead perpetuating the stripping away of our rights and privacy. People will let this happen too, with little outcry.
There was no initial need for the Patriot Act in the first place, Bush was told about the 9/11 attacks and did not respond accordingly. The same intelligence gathering methods then can and are being used now. There is no need for an extension.

I wonder if Obama has even read the Patriot Act. No one else in Congress did before they voted for it. And yes, where are all those who decried it when Bush was in the White House? Where are the rousing speeches about civil liberties? Now it's OK to trample on them? And as it is, we aren't in Afghanistan about 9.11 or terrorism. It is about OIL, DRUGS, and corporate hegemony.

They both suck, so does the patriot act... So does this whole imperialistic fascist dictatorship, run by a select group of corporate entities whose sole purpose is to herd everyone around, control YOUR lives, and make profit as they kill YOU off....
I almost have no compassion for those stupid enough to be herded around, or controlled by more sticks and carrots.... You want change vote with your conscience (accept that your vote won't count), and fight with all your heart not to contribute to a failed oppressive system...
Boycott everything that isn't essential to survival, and quit being so damn "civilly" disobedient....

What I hate is they've co-opted the term "patriot", for use in such an intrusive, controlling document. The first place I heard the term patriot, was in reference to our "founding fathers" ( who were actually considered criminals by the English). This "newspeak" mentality of incorrectly naming something to make it more appealing is sick.
Another thing this "patriot act" was never needed in any form, if the powers that be were doing there job right (and their underlings) 911 would've never happened....
The whole thing wreaks of conspiracy...
Usurping the power from the people in a time of crisis, and then running with it... horrible....
Just as their have been fights, battles, and wars fought over freedoms and rights; we should very much fight against the governments intrusion into our lives.
Freedom isn't free, the more complacent everyone is the more we stand to lose. We've already lost states rights to a large degree everywhere. Obama went back on his word not to let the DEA raid medicinal marijuana providers in California. IT might not matter to most but it's the principal...
How does the saying go....???
A government that fears the people is a good government.
A people that fear the government, is what? subject to a tyranny????
