Political Prisoner in America!! Native American Activist Peltier Speaks on Denied Parole

"The United States Department of Justice has once again made a mockery of its lofty and pretentious title.
After releasing an original and continuing disciple of death cult leader Charles Manson who attempted to shoot President Gerald Ford, an admitted Croatian terrorist, and another attempted assassin of President Ford under the mandatory 30-year parole law, the U.S. Parole Commission deemed that my release would “promote disrespect for the law.”
If only the federal government would have respected its own laws, not to mention the treaties that are, under the U.S. Constitution, the supreme law of the land, I would never have been convicted nor forced to spend more than half my life in captivity. Not to mention the fact that every law in this country was created without the consent of Native peoples and is applied unequally at our expense. If nothing else, my experience should raise serious questions about the FBI's supposed jurisdiction in Indian Country.
The parole commission's phrase was lifted from soon-to-be former U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley, who apparently hopes to ride with the FBI cavalry into the office of North Dakota governor. In this Wrigley is following in the footsteps of William Janklow, who built his political career on his reputation as an Indian fighter, moving on up from tribal attorney (and alleged rapist of a Native minor) to state attorney general, South Dakota governor, and U.S. Congressman. Some might recall that Janklow claimed responsibility for dissuading President Clinton from pardoning me before he was convicted of manslaughter. Janklow's historical predecessor, George Armstrong Custer, similarly hoped that a glorious massacre of the Sioux would propel him to the White House, and we all know what happened to him.
Unlike the barbarians that bay for my blood in the corridors of power, however, Native people are true humanitarians who pray for our enemies. Yet we must be realistic enough to organize for our own freedom and equality as nations. We constitute 5% of the population of North Dakota and 10% of South Dakota and we could utilize that influence to promote our own power on the reservations, where our focus should be. If we organized as a voting bloc, we could defeat the entire premise of the competition between the Dakotas as to which is the most racist. In the 1970s we were forced to take up arms to affirm our right to survival and self-defense, but today the war is one of ideas. We must now stand up to armed oppression and colonization with our bodies and our minds. International law is on our side.
Given the complexion of the three recent federal parolees, it might seem that my greatest crime was being Indian. But the truth is that my gravest offense is my innocence. In Iran, political prisoners are occasionally released if they confess to the ridiculous charges on which they are dragged into court, in order to discredit and intimidate them and other like-minded citizens. The FBI and its mouthpieces have suggested the same, as did the parole commission in 1993, when it ruled that my refusal to confess was grounds for denial of parole"......
"In America, there can by definition be no political prisoners, only those duly judged guilty in a court of law. It is deemed too controversial to even publicly contemplate that the federal government might fabricate and suppress evidence to defeat those deemed political enemies. But it is a demonstrable fact at every stage of my case.
I am Barack Obama's political prisoner now, and I hope and pray that he will adhere to the ideals that impelled him to run for president. But as Obama himself would acknowledge, if we are expecting him to solve our problems, we missed the point of his campaign. Only by organizing in our own communities and pressuring our supposed leaders can we bring about the changes that we all so desperately need"...Leonard Peltier

Peltier was jailed for the alleged murder of two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation in the 1970s.
Incident at Oglala is a documentary on the subject. Thunderheart with Val Kilmer is loosely based on the story.

I maybe a little slow so I do not understand: so please help me understand. In the begining it says he is a Croation terrorist. Was he imprisoned for being an activist or trying to assasinate Ford?
In reading it again, it maybe he that the writer is putting examples of others who got realeased and asking why he didn't.Why was Peltier imprisoned in the first place?
sometime extreme activism may lead to terrible things, but i thought it was good to be an activist. speak up, create awareness, get others to be interested, etc.
i will try to look up more info on this to learn bout it,
but if anyone can share some simple details, that will be appreciated.
thanks. - 2 years ago

Is there a pardon movement that is specifically targeting President Obama?
Assuming the Republicans will not let him out, why did Clinton not pardon him?

He should stop being so prideful with comments like "international law is on our side" ---- he sounds far too vengeful and not really into being released on the merits of being innocent.
Even so....if he shouldn't be in prison because he was an activist. Hopefully he really didn't do anything else. I have a hard time believing, just how he words things, that he didn't do something else...something he's hiding.
Hope and Change is here....so maybe the people that are now under the Obama administration will look at this and help.
Can't Obama pardon someone? Or is that something that can only happen when his term is coming to an end?
Y'all should read the book called The Innocent Man about a guy in Oklahoma who was accused of rape and murder and he was nowhere near the place when it happened. The DA set out to accuse someone, found someone crazy and did so....the crazy person wasn't a great person overall but he was one thing for sure: INNOCENT. That book will break your heart and it will renew the idea that there are people out there that care enough to fight.
I want to care, but I don't trust this guy that much. His statement up above is far too convoluted. It would be nice to have a straightforward view of what transpired and not this guilt ridden Indian thing on how our land was stolen from us. In reality no one really owns any land....not even the Indians. It's a stupid statement. If they really want to get technical they stole their land from the Animals and they might want to sit there and state how they share the land and respect the animals, but in true respect there is no killing and if they truly respected they'd have been vegans.
Plus some even ate humans when they defeated them.
Is there a cliff notes version? I don't want to sift through self centeredness to find it.
I don't need a lot of show and dance to realize that something went terribly wrong. I just want to know what exactly he was involved in and what he did....everything...without justifying it.
I like writing letters and I like being someone who'll push to get something done....if you help me understand you just might have a real valuable player.

J,
There are many many sites that supporters have made For Mr. Peltier. I just picked this myspace one because it had so much info on it. However you may find this one better. I hope you will join the cause. 30 Years in prison well that is enough to make anyone bitter. Leonard is a good man. You write well and it would be a blessing to have your help.

I've heard that Andrew Jackson did quite a number on the Cherokee, forcing them to relocate from as far as Georgia to what is now Oklahoma. Some have even accused Old Hickory of genocide, citing the thousands of Cherokee who died on the "Trail of Tears." What I want to know is, how does Jackson rank among practitioners of genocide? Does he even make the all-time top-ten list? I figure he has to come in way behind Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, the Turkish triumvirate Talat, Enver, and Cemal (who orchestrated the Armenian genocide), and the recent Hutu leaders in Rwanda. Can you think of any others who rank ahead of Jackson?

Wow! I am overwhelmed. This is a truly tragic story of yet another Native American man's life. I am shocked but sadly not surprised. It appears that the American policy has never changed and I am afraid never will change. Is this about Power Paid by Lives of Heroes Who Believe in Freedom?

.I have allot of respect for the north American Indian people and there ways. and believe in many of your spiritual beliefs. It’s to late to make any real change in like giving back the lands and so forth . But I believe that the F.B.I. should be dismantled and reorganized after Waco’s tragic end. Those people were not a threat to the U.S. Gov.. And were living the way they saw fit. Which is our rite. as long as you don't hurt any on in your in your quest to live as you see fit.
They are murders of children. They are the hammer of injustice.
An original and continuing disciple of death cult leader Charles Manson you see these people wish to kill and creat more pain and sorrow. Now the land and the Indian people should have. complete control there land and people. because they were here first. and the evil of old European thought and desire to conquer . All but wiped out the Indian nation .Power hungry individuals and evil plans.
I say give the Indian people there own block to swing the vote.
Now with that in mined if a killer goes to an Indian reservation to escape prosecution for crimes against the U.S. law. Should a extrdition proccess be started. Or the Indian people commit crimes or killing on U.S. soil. Would it be seen as a act of war, an invasion and dealt with as such.
Do the individual Indian nations have a international ambassador to discuses change. and create international trade. The U.S. should have nothing to say about that. your inports would cross U.S. siol but only in transport so the indian country would have there own customs inspections.
now with the thought of the changes over the last 50 yrs. Indian res. now can build casino's and are raking in millions of dollars and the people are supposed to all benefit. Y are they still suffering.
Now remember power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Are they now and if so are you suffering because of it. - 2 years ago
