Iraq Shoe Thrower Released from Prison

afitzgerald
An Iraqi reporter who hurled his shoes at then U.S. President George Bush was released from prison on Tuesday (September 15). Muntazer al-Zaidi, whose act of defiance during a news conference last December chimed with the feelings of many Iraqis towards the former U.S. leader, was met outside the jail by jubilant supporters.

Baghdad residents expressed their happiness of Muntazer's release, saying he had done the right thing.

Zaidi was sentenced to three years in jail for assaulting a visiting head of state, but his sentence was later reduced to one year. An Iraqi court ordered Zaidi's release on Monday because under Iraqi law all prisoners sentenced to one year without previous convictions who show good behavior automatically get out after serving three quarters of it.

    • Why did they think they could torture him? What did they think the first words out of his mouth would be? I feel as if us americans will be considered the 21 century nazis because of our treatment of other human beings.

This will be a mark of shame for our country and its people for a very long time to come.

according to iraqi's culture , throwing shoe at sombody is the most humiliading jesture , that you could have about somebody , beacuse shoe is smelly and the person who is the victom of show throwing supositly is the most nastiest person on earth who does not deserve stone or bat and so forth, i am simply teaching part of the middle east culture,

    • If bush was any kind of real man he would have forgivein the man and addressed the people. In a apologetic way and try to explain that they were only trying to help the Iraqi people. But some times when there's a war there will be individuals that with out permission commit barbaric means of gathering Intel.
that would have caused more Iraqis to be more sypathetic to the U.S.
If we make all the countries that we invade or help in a war must become a part of the united states, the state of Iraq, the state of Afghanistan, the state of south Korea, the state of Vietnam. Then They would have all the rites a U.S. citizen receives and they would have there own state laws and policies. Then they would be U.S. States, that we rebuild the country gets larger tax revenues increase, excetra. In time there would be only one united planet.

Like Obama with Health care...saying sorry and being more sympathetic to how terrible he is with relaying information to the public about what is going on and how it's all going to work out when and if it is passed.

----aside from the fact that that line of thinking is reserved for only one side....it would have been nice if Bush had someone who backed him on things like that and convinced him it would be a good idea to have done something like that.

I think all Presidents need a social/moral type of PR person that hears what people are saying and help the President to get through some of it and look better for trying. Pleasing everyone won't happen, but trying is noticeable to even the hardest of hearts.

I believe, that Bush did ask for leniency towards the shoe thrower. It really awes me that the left has propped this person up and congratulate him, but demonize the Wilson lie comment. I don't get it. Wilson was wrong i think we can agree on that, and he apologized. Wilson's attatck was whin words, the shoe dude tried to physically asoult the President of the United States. I suppose if this were to happen today it would be racist, and they would want the thrower in jail forever for a hate crime????
Let's just try to see things for what they are

I would believe that Bush did that. But I think it would be good to have verification that he did try....do you have any?

Good point about the lie comment being tossed at Obama vs the shoe.

Wait for the erroneous justification someone will have for the 'difference'.

      @j,
I researched and could find no substantiation for my previous post. I may have remembered the cry to pardon him, i don't remember. I wanted to be the first to say i was incorrect, sorry. My analogy though still remains.

You must have seen many opinion pieces suggesting he should.

None of those same people are asking for such forgiveness when a senator said YOU LIE to Obama.

Oh the pains of being called a liar is so painful...than a shoe in da face. But at least he had terrible aim and Bush had great dexterity.

Yeah. If a white man threw a shoe at Obama and the shoe hit Obama and Obama wasn't fast enough to move because he's a smoker and couldn't breath right to do so.....it would be racist.

I want all to know this:

We don't agree (that goes without saying), but I love that strong affirmative opinion. So many people dance and dance without stating what they mean for fear of being less witty....but you just BAM and be damned who gets hurt.

Of course that has drawbacks, but it's great to see even when it's used against me.

    • I thought they gave him time because of the fact that the Iraqi PM was standing next to Bush and could have been hit (?) Why would throwing anything at Bush warrant jail time? He was no "head of state."

    • Bush deserved it.he's a war criminal.this man is a hero and get a medal, instead he goes to jail and is tortured. Bush and Cheney and their whole rotten administration should go to jail and be tortured for war crimes, and also as traitors.they swore tp protect and defend the constitution, and instead, ripped it to shreds with the provisions of the Patriot Act and other laws passed which violate the spirit of the constition.they violated law.they must not be immune from justice! Instead of shoes Bush should br dodge the bullets of a firing squard.

If the consequences of jail was worth tossing the shoe for what he believed then he did the right thing. If he is to complain about treatment and want to be victimized for having said opinion knowing what the consequences would be.....he did the wrong thing for the pretend reasons.
